Is it just my imagination, or an intended plot device that the Season 8 Bangel relationship seems to be a parallel to Spuffy in general? I certainly can't imagine that it's just coincidence. Here's what I'm seeing:
1) They both (Spike and Twilight/Angel) start out as Buffy's enemies, and their first meeting involves the Big Bad taunting Buffy.
2) Buffy has just seen the end of a relationship (okay this one might be a stretch, but still...) in both cases that a lot of the fans see as out of character at best or just plain wrong at worst, with Riley and a combination of Satsu, who, like Riley longs to hear Buffy admit her love, but really knows that it will never happen; and Xander, who, like Riley, chooses something or someone (the Army and Dawn) over Buffy, because Buffy waited too long to let her feelings be known. (and ultimately, Riley winds up in a permanent relationship with Sam, Xander winds up with Dawn, and I'm betting that Satsu forms some sort of relationship, perhaps not romantic, but potentially very strong, that leaves the fans speculating (I'm toying with Faith here, but only if she and Spike don't hook up)
3) First sex with both men is as much, if not more, violent than romantic, Spuffy tearing a house down and Bangel/Bwilight tearing holes in dimensional barriers
4) Buffy wakes up, post initial sex, in a strange place with a definite feeling that something is wrong.
5) In both cases, Buffy has just acquired a mysterious new weapon, the Scythe and super powers, respectively.
6) Both relationships involve an ex-boyfriend showing up at the last moment with pertinent information and an instrument that will likely help in the coming battle, Angel with his folder and amulet, and Spike with his "I speak Fyaral" information, whatever that turns out to be, and a cool yellow space ship/hovercraft, complete with crew.
7) Current boyfriend/lover distrusts and is jealous of ex-boyfriend/lover, Spike with Angel and Angel with Spike.
(and these next are purely speculation, but would work in perfectly if they turn out to be true)
8) Both boyfriends/lovers wind up saving the day and becoming the unquestionable hero of the day by an act of supreme sacrifice, Spike closing the hellmouth, and Angel by closing the dimensional portal, resulting in:
9) The destruction of Sunnydale and the new universe, respectively, and:
10) The number of Slayers being greatly increased, from two to a literal army, and the number of supernatural baddies being greatly decreased to only vampires when all of the demons and magic power are expelled from earth.
And in addition to all of those things, there are these, which don't involve Spuffy or Bangel/Bwilight, but do seem like a bit more than common coincidence.
1) The death of Xander's current love interest, Anya or Renee.
2) The return of Willow's old lover, Oz in both cases.
3) The return of Dracula
So, whaddaya think? My overactive imagination, or some sort of pattern that Joss is laying down to spring on us, either within the next couple of issues, or in the coming 49th and (I sincerely hope NOT) final season?
