Bangelfolk: How Would You Have Improved S7 Spuffy?

Yeah I agree with you- I do think that Spike is likable for the most part on Angel season 5 and I enjoy him there. I think it’s as much an issue that some fans don’t differentiate between souled and unsouled Spike - or they do but only when it suits them. For example, people hate on Robin for attacking Spike because ‘He’s not the same person’ but then they talk about how much they love Spike’s journey to season 7 and they rank Spike #1 on their character lists without for example putting unsouled Spike at #10. He’s honestly either the same person or he’s not we can’t just pick and choose what Spike is responsible for and what he isn’t. So it’s a combination of the show and fandom not being clear enough that bugs me.

This is my biggest problem with the character. And it’s 100% the writers fault-they broke their own established lore with it. Its really lazy writing.

For me to ever accept Spuffy, they would have had to take. their. time. Time, to be fair, they ddn't have.

Listen, Spike did terrible things. Terrible things to many many people, but also to Buffy. (And before any one brings up the very good point that Buffy wasn't a ray of sunshine either, remember, that was for a reason, and she was having a lot of issues at that point. She was also dealing with somebody who tortures and murders people for fun, so she's probably not gonna offer him a lollipop, ya know?)

The worst part about the whole season 7 thing for me, was that the last thing they had experienced together was *cough cough* "Seeing Red". That was a terrible, tradgic, traumatizing thing for Buffy. At least it should have been. Instead, the writers decide to ignore the fact that Spuffy was meant to teach a lesson, and decide to listen to the fans. So, Buffy easily forgives Spike, and her friends just so happen to be a little distant and less understanding, so she finds herself constantly snuggling up to For-Some-Reason-Randomly-Ensouled-Sensitive-Puppy-Dog-Spike.

Noooooooooooo.

You want to fix Spuffy?
Here's how I'd fix Spuffy. (For me personally)

He does in fact, go off after "Seeing Red", horrified, and earns his soul back. He comes back, and works for her (And eveyone's) forgiveness. And he does have to work. She doesn't forgive him right away. Maybe she isn't angry, but she's hurt, and let's be honest, doesn't trust him. She eventually grows to forgive him, instead of just letting Dawn stay with him (Right after she was attacked, no less) or blindly accepting him and forgetting everything he did because he says he's changed.
(I personally don't want them in a relationship at all, but, but assuming I do)
A season or so later, then, maybe they are ready to build a real relationship. But it's one of trust, and more than just "Nobody understands us, come hold me".

That, I might be okay with.

I didn't hate Spike's character before season 6. He was funny, and a great addition to the show. But I hate seeing relatioships that would never work, just because the characters are cool, and people think they are "hot" together. I'm kind of a practical person in this respect, I only ship people who actually work well together, and I could see in the long run. (Yes, I think about fictional people this way.)

Wel, that was MY take, anyways! 🙂

Yes! Thanks for making an example of my favorite opinion that any pairing can make sense if there's a slow enough slow burn :)
