So basically, I want to know if any fellow Bangels see chemistry between Spike and Buffy.

I see some sexual tension, but personally I just don't see that much chemistry. I'm not sure if this is because I'm biased toward Bangel or if JM and SMG just lack chemistry together. Or maybe I'm just a fan of a certain kind of chemistry.

With Angel and Buffy you can see the sexual attraction and loving attraction. Their kisses just feel so real. It's like it's really occurring between two people who truly love each other, and I can just feel the chemistry overflowing out of them.

With Spuffy, I just don't see much besides some sexual tension, but then again at times this even falls flat because Buffy looks miserable or like she isn't even there when they are in the middle of getting on.

So just wondering what you guys see!

I see more of a frenemy chemistry. They're antagonistic to each other and might help each other out when it suits them but I don't see an romantic will they/won't they tension at all. When you compare the Sprusilla chemistry and the Bangel chemistry, it is completely off the charts in comparison to the Spuffy chemistry. Spuffy does not work as a romantic ship.

I'm baffled when people talk about the chemistry between Buffy and Spike. I don't see it at all. He has oodles of chemistry with Dru and even Faith (including when she's in Buffy's body), but not Buffy. But Spike, from his extremely subjective view of reality, certainly believes there's chemistry. He thinks she's as obsessed with him as he is with her, even when she mainly thinks of him as a nuisance and is annoyed that she has to devote ANY energy to him. And she was completely blindsided (and horrified) to learn that he had a crush on her, because it had never even occurred to her to view him as a romantic prospect, even though "Something Blue" had happened.

No, I don't see any romantic chemistry between them. Like you mention, I certainly see tension -- but that's pretty much the extent of it in my eyes. Any time they kiss, Buffy looks in pain; 'Once More, with Feeling' comes to mind. Of course it could be attributed to Buffy's mental state at the time, but still it doesn't sell me on their chemistry. And then in any of their scenes in season 7, Buffy just looks... so bored and hollow that if it weren't for external cues, I wouldn't even know to take her looks as "meaningful." This is just one example, during the scene when she says something along the lines of "I'm not ready for you to not be here":

Agreed! I'm sure part of it has to do with how close David and Sarah were but they just felt very natural together.

Spuffy has none of that chemistry.

By the way, vote in the Buffyverse Ship Tournament 2 if you haven't already. It's over in the Game of Life section of the boards.

I see more of a frenemy chemistry.
That's how I see it. I do see chemistry between them when they were enemies or frenemies. They have great antagonistic chemistry. They pop when they throw barbs at each other. Even when 'Fuffy' comes onto him, the best parts are when she is teasing him just to be mean and he in turn threatens her life. I saw however nothing in terms of sexual chemistry in S6. However I have only seen season 6 once completely sober. First time it aired I quit after the balcony scene.

Acting tics also didn't help, or whatever they were trying to do to make Spike sexy/sexual in order to sell it better. There is only so much tongue lolling, eyebrow raising and head tilts I can take before I rather blow my brains out.

Aww, would you look at that. It's the 'sad hands'.

Always wanted to make a drinking game out of the head tilt. LOL.

To the OP: I guess it all depends on what you mean by "chemistry." As the posts above indicate, I agree that SMG and JM had great chemistry when they were being antagonistic. When it was trading blows or trading insults. There was an undercurrent of tension there that could have lead you to believe they needed to just screw and get it over with. And if they had in fact just, screwed and got it over with, that would've been a fine story to tell. But it took off in different directions as we all know.

I thought they had decent sexual chemistry in SOME of their S6 sex scenes. But I thought their best kiss was actually the kiss in Spike's dream and I chalk that up to amazing acting on SMG's part because it is all part of HIS fantasy. She is not conflicted or holding back at all she just gives in to the kiss and that sells the kiss. Good chemistry there. But in Smashed/Wrecked/Dead Things and most of the other Season 6 sex scenes, SMG makes these kinda weird confused, shocked, weirded out faces during the sex scenes:

latest

If the question is do they have romantic chemistry the answer to me is very simply, no. And quite frankly, I don't think any type of romantic chemistry was ever meant to be written between them in the show until MAYBE Touched. But even then it doesn't work for me she still looks sad and conflicted.

Ultimately, I guess I think it's unfair to compare the Spuffy chemistry to Bangel because Bangel was a full on relationship. She was head over heals for the guy for years. I know I have read that some people don't see the chemistry with SMG/DB and that BLOWS my mind. It's also weird because SMG and DB were pretty close. Body language, etc you can tell they were very comfortable with each other and that showed on screen. If this is how they look when the camera isn't even rolling --

8ed3ae3db6bf54e86a5db6262049525f--buffy-vampire-slayer-vampires.jpg

....you are probably going to have some good chemistry when you are rolling. And I think they did.

Ha, it's still a big mystery to this day whether the tabloids of DB and SMG being a real item circa 1998-1999 are true or not. There is a ton of photos and stories of them being very cozy with each other, both on and off set. SMG is sitting right on his lap half the time. SMG has outright admitted that she was crushing on both David and Angel alike. The feelings seemed to have been very much there on her side at the very least. How much of it was the WB creating buzz in the tabloids and how much was real kinda is one of the biggest BTS mysteries of the show. Some of the rumors state they may have gone out on a few dates, but just ultimately stayed friends.

He was married at the time, but well, that hasn't always stopped David. SMG even commented on his first marriage being "not made in heaven" and there were a bunch of tabloids saying Ingrid was crashing the set because she suspected DB and SMG were an item. When asked about the DB rumors, she denied in that one interview of them being seen eating at a healthy restaurant together by noting that she's never seen him eat anything that wasn't deep fried (LOL). We do know DB and Seth went out to NYC for SNL with her and she was also photographed clubbing with DB with her arms looped around him. They were also kissing on the red carpet and always together at events. They were always super touchy-feely. This is also the same SMG that denied that she was even dating Freddie when she definitely was, so she has always been tight-lipped.

And of course, it was SMG who wanted DB at the 20th with her and talked him into going. Whatever happened, they're still super comfortable with each other, even to the point of them crashing poolside family vacations, her noting their kids are of similar age (the daughters) and her lunching with him on the Bones set during The Crazy Ones.

She took all of the Bangel scenes very personally and took the emotional demons home with her. She was really invested in the emotions of the early years. She shut down the set twice in The Prom and IWRY because she was so distraught and was getting hugged in between takes to comfort her when David had to act out the harsh Angelus bedroom scene in Innocence. You can also see David so very sweetly encouraging SMG to keep going through the IOHEFY possession scene (he also makes her laugh with his "wops" blooper), while she's telling him she's so tired (shot in the middle of the night). He was her most trusted person on set. SMG has had a persistent hard-to-work-with reputation for a long time (her Helpless outtakes are really bad, admittedly), but we always hear about how David was the one person who could calm her down when she was crying and could also make her laugh. Then we also have that infamous interview of Alyson saying that SMG stopped caring about the show after season 3, which had to be walked back when it caused a 'shipper shitstorm.

SMG had a yucked out reaction to James saying he saw her as his little sister, which made their romance scenes very uncomfortable (James is also 15 years older, whereas David was only 8). JM loved doing romantic scenes with Juliet Landau! So much so that his one-time girlfriend got jealous and said David was better looking, which actually made James jealous of David and it created a lot of the rivalry between them that he used! JM was really wigged about having to lick SMG's shoulder (season 7) and it was because it felt like he was licking his sister. And of course, SMG hated the degrading sex scenes. When she did the infamous magazine interview where she quit, she even specified the degrading sex scenes in season 6 as what really turned her off from the show. SMG and JM liked each other, but they really weren't into their romantic scenes.

One thing is for certain is that DB and SMG were very comfortable with each other and he seems to have also been protective of her on set (that story of her getting sexually harassed on set and DB and JM getting angry enough about it that they discussed beating the guy up, but didn't). I kinda wonder now about the new revelations of Joss using his power over his actresses with a casting couch. I dare say that SMG was too busy mooning over DB (reciprocated or not, she had an admitted crush) for Joss to have gotten anywhere (and boy, did he get an inferiority complex about DB and JM's looks about how good they had it--even said it to JM's face about him getting laid easier and straight-up compared DB to the sort of jocks who bullied him). And we know both SMG and DB were actors of his stable he really didn't get along with. He's been known to pettily dump on both of their characters. They were also solid no-shows at the Shakespeare readings and never in Joss' clique. CC (understatement) and her bestie Julie Benz have also commented on not really getting along with Joss. Joss also hated Tim Minear when he first met him, but ultimately hired him for talent. Joss really has a reputation for being an ass.

But anyway, speculation aside, it's plainly obvious that SMG absolutely lights up anytime she's with DB. She has utter love and adoration in her eyes. After years of her not looking that way at any of her next costars, it's quite telling when it suddenly comes back again. She couldn't even be bothered to advertise the Briley relationship while it was happening, whereas she gushed over Bangel and David every chance she got. SMG just kind of looks like she's "going through the motions" through a lot of the last seasons in general and she looks really dead-eyed and tired in a lot of season 7. Even the Spuffy scenes are like that. JM and SMG had a hell of a time with the Hellmouth "I love you" because the actors didn't actually believe it was true, no matter how much Joss wanted it to be. Neither actor believed it was more than comforting words that Spike was right to deny.

The reason for JM's head tilts, by the way, was because he was focused on not blocking SMG's light with his big head. It was a purely technical thing. Their romance scenes tended to just be a lot of technical things. JM even has talked about how he was just thinking about the technical how-tos of acting during it all. And this is by a Method actor (he also got taken out of the moment, because SMG is NOT a Method actor and would go back to being herself after every take, whereas Juliet Landau also is). Not exactly a description of passion, is it?

One thing I always notice is that JM just mashes his mouth against her roughly in all their kissing scenes (only the Intervention kiss has any tenderness, IMO). Not much tenderness or soft, sweet, affectionate kisses at all. DB and SMG, on the other hand, weren't even doing the fake Hollywood kissing that is taught to actors that you see so often (kissing above and below the mouth, rather than right on it). DB, in particular, just seems to have gone for the real thing, rather than anything actorly, and his kissing scenes always come across as authentic because of it (Eliza Dushku had the same idea, getting her tongue stabbed on his fangs and all). SMG even commented on him being the best kisser of any of the actors she's had to work with. The weird thing is, SMG didn't even want JM kissing her the real way (she actually told him to do it the fake way), yet she sure didn't seem to mind when DB did it so obviously for real. DB was even sneaking his tongue in during the kisses in 1x07 and the Surprise love scene (visible, especially in HD with the lights on). They also have the noticeable spit trail in IOHEFY. One thing you'll also notice with DB and SMG is that they just can't stop smiling at each other in a lot of their kissing scenes! They're always smiling at each other with affection!

This sort of explains what the Spuffy kisses really were like for the actors and I think it shows:
James Marsters said:
(6-02 SFX Event) To tell you the truth, I don't know! Because it's very different kissing someone acting wise. This is something Sarah taught me actually. There was a kiss where the camera came around the Bronze and all these people were in liplock. It was at the end of the episode where we lost our memory. And we had to do that like 12 times because I kept kissing for real and our lips were like (makes smashing lips face). Sarah kept trying to explain that it's like stunts - you gotta be very careful to take yourself out of it. You don't hit for real - it's fake and you make it look real. So I wish I could answer your question - you don't know how bad. (giggles)

(6-03 Company Magazine)
Film kissing is a whole different bag. You can do a lot of disservice to your leading lady by kissing her for too long. When I first kissed Sarah, I bit her. She was a bit shocked. And sex scenes are even more awkward - you're standing there in nothing but a sock for 18 hours! There's no getting around the fact that you're the only naked person in a room full of your friends - it's the stuff of nightmares. Everyone's had that dream where they turn up to work naked, but it's my job to show up that way every day.

(10-03 Chaos Bleeds comments)
A screen kiss is a very different thing than a real kiss. You're often concentrating so hard in trying to get your light in your eyes and not get in her light and then not making your lips go all crazy and messed up and stuff and so it's really technical. It's a lot actually like stunts. I don't know what it would be like to really fight with Sarah and I also really don't know what it would be like to kiss her. I really haven't really kissed her. That's not really what people want to hear, but it's the truth. You know, it's like kissing my sister. It's weird. Sarah and I have -- She's like my kid sister and we're good friends and we get along really well.

(5-05 Collectormania) Juliet. Sarah I respect, I like her a lot, she's like a sister to me, but going through 17 hour days, it's like war, and the enemy is time, and in order to work with Sarah and enjoy myself, I put her into the psychological category of my little sister who drives me crazy sometimes, but I love her anyway. And then they made me kiss her, and that was weird, so I have to say, some of those scenes are hot and everything, but I'm thinking, 'I'm kissing my sister.' But Juliet is the same kind of actor I am, which is nothing is too far for her. Her commitment level is absolutely off the charts, just like mine, so I always felt there was a part of my character that I couldn't get to without her on the set. All the really nasty bits, all that stuff never really happened without her on the set. Juliet Landau, she's a great actor.

I could eve feel some possible chemistry between Faith and Spike like someone mentioned above, but Spuffy it just wasn't there.

I agree with y'all, I mainly see frenemy/antagonistic chemistry with some underlying sexual tension, but when they do have sex Buffy has this blank look or constipated look, and neither of those are good faces to have during sex lol.

I just never saw the chemistry that others see between them, and I get very confused when people don't see Bangel's chemistry...

LOL I didn't really think JM has a big head. I would say DB's head is larger, just because he has a larger stature.

And I also have read that SMG didn't like kissing JM because he was constantly having to smoke as Spike.

But, this was . great analysis! It really shows between actors when they aren't even invested in their own story.
The only time they had any of the cutesy chemistry was Something Blue, but that's because it was fake and they were just having fun with it.

That last bit posted by @NileQT87 about JM and Juliet Landeau is very telling and part of why Sprusilla was so incredibly dramatic and so much fun to watch.
Not just the actors for me but everything about them worked. They looked so gorgeously gothic together. Her with her almost ethereal gothicness. Him with his weird hair and unique facial features. He cared a great deal about her emotional and physical well being and would have moved heaven or hell to keep her safe (unlike with Buffy). She managed to reign in his more spontaneous and often hot-headed antics and that probably kept them alive. He never dismissed her unique craziness. He got her presents and always made sure to buy a new bird when the last one died. And they looked so at ease with each other.

Absolutely. The scene in School Hard (where my avatar is from) where they lean in to kiss but then turn to the camera was actually an improvisation by the two actors. They did it in James' audition and it got used in the episode. I also suspect that the kiss at the beginning of What's my Line part 1 might have been an improvisation but it works so well.

Agreed. Sprusilla's relationship feels real in the sense that it's believable that these are two individuals who love each other especially as they've been together for over 100 years.

JM and JL would kiss for real and as a result that added a naturalness to all their scenes, they were just so at ease with each other and would go with the flow. The Fool for Love Kiss demonstrates this, when one raises the bar, the other will raise it even further.

The Spuffy scenes always seemed so stilted and it's no wonder if SMG was constantly telling JM to do things a certain way rather than just going with the flow like JL did. It's why the Sprusilla scenes and kisses are full of chemistry and the Spuffy ones aren't.

I didn't even see sexual tension between them, it felt forced to me, like two mannequins forced together. It's just awkward to watch. The only time I saw the least bit of chemistry was in Who are you? but then SMG is not acting as Buffy, but very un-Buffy like, because she's Faith, so to me that doesn't really count.

I thought they had a terrific chemistry as enemies though, like when Buffy threatens Dru in Lie To Me, there's just a great animosity there because they're people who both fight for the people they love. Spike would've made a terrific Big Bad in the later seasons. If only he hadn't had that wet dream maybe he'd have gone back to Dru and those dreams of mine would've come true. Spike and Dru were probably the hottest couple of the whole -verse, a united Sprusilla would've made for much more fun TV than Trios and chatty First Evils.

Loved loved loved Sprusilla! Gorgeously gothic is the perfect phrase. They were just so sensual together. It's why I sometimes find 'Crush' rather strange to watch, especially if you watch it alongside one of their S2 episodes. In S2 their chemistry was intense and despite gothic horror gruesomeness ('eyeballs to entrails' - my fav line!) it never felt Addams-family ridiculous because they played it straight. Next to that 'Crush' is like self-parody, which I think is due to Spike now being comic relief rather than a credible threat. Even if you accept that Spike has now fully switched his obsession to Buffy, he still shouldn't so easily be able to toss Dru aside. There should be that undeniable pull of the sire/sired relationship. Angel loved Buffy more than anything yet when Darla turns up in AtS the intensity of their connection is palpable - the unresolved desire, the pull of darkness. And that was Angel with a soul. It should be even more difficult for a soulless Spike to resist. The first time I watched it I was so excited for that brief return of Sprusilla in the middle of the episode, but then it just fizzled out.

Feel free to vote in the Buffyverse Ship tournament 2 over in the Game of life section of the boards. Bangel are currently winning with Tillow and Woz in 2nd and 3rd and Sprusilla in 4th. Wesley/Lilah and Angel/Darla are 5th and 6th. Spuffy are 7th. None of Xander's ships have made the top 12 yet but are close.

The first time I watched it I was so excited for that brief return of Sprusilla in the middle of the episode, but then it just fizzled out.

The Sprusilla dance was good. It's a bit obvious though that the reason Dru was brought back was so Spike could reject her in favour of Buffy because the only way the writers could make Spuffy fly was to get rid of Sprusilla for good. Thing is though Drusilla is either mentioned by Spike or shown in flashback with Spike in every Season he is in. She is still very much on his mind.

Here's a question to everyone. Do you consider the Fool for Love flashback of Spike and Dru in Brazil canon (she left him because she saw he was going to be in love with Buffy) or do you consider what Spike says in Lovers Walk to be canon (that Dru left him because she thought he'd gone soft and wasn't "demon enough" after his truce with Buffy?)

The Sprusilla dance was good. It's a bit obvious though that the reason Dru was brought back was so Spike could reject her in favour of Buffy because the only way the writers could make Spuffy fly was to get rid of Sprusilla for good. I prefer the Lovers' Walk one but I think they're both canon as long as you read the FFL flashback as a self-fulfilling prophecy due to Drusilla's foresight, rather than as a retcon that he wanted Buffy since S2
