Okay...so when Buffy sees Spike for the first time, he notices her hands, and says "i had to claw my way out of the grave too" or something along those lines. However, when we see him first turned, he goes to see his mother and she ask where he has been. To me it seems like he was never buried and he was just missing for a few days. Am I missing something here or was this probably a continuity issue?
 
im not sure, as its all speculation anyway, but if im not mistaken, according to the whedonverse rules, when you're sired you have to be buried to rise again. i think there has been dispute about this and whether or not it occured in some cases, but mainly it does (angel, darla, the vamps buffy meets at the cemeteries, etc.). if it held true here, he could have been buried (by drusilla), and then been hanging out with her, thus seeming missing to all the people he knew as a human.
 
There is actually no technical rule about being buried as part of the "becoming a vampire" process. There have been several examples on Buffy where humans became vamps never having been put underground. When Sunday turned Buffy's friend Eddie in The Freshman is one example that springs to mind.

I think the answer to this lies in the Angel episode, Reunion. For no good reason, Drusilla takes the dead body of Darla and buries her until she rises again as a vampire. It's stated in that episode that Dru is something of a traditionalist when it comes to vampire lore and so it would make sense that she also went to the trouble of putting Spike in the ground in the same way. Hence he would never have had a funeral as such but would still have had to dig himself out.
 
Which would explain why Spike buried all his victims in the basement in S7's Sleeper ep.

I actually think that was more to do with the wishes of the First. Clearly that was a trap set for Buffy as those people were all killed at different times, maybe days apart in some cases. The odds of them all waking at the same time were not great without the First somehow influencing events. It was too much of a coincidence that they all awoke together and also at the exact moment Buffy found herself there too. That would also be a good reason for Spike to bury them.

yeah, what Arcane said is pretty much my thinking too. we all know that Dru isn't 'all there' so she maybe doesn't realize that it's not actually nesseccary for someone to be buried before they rise as a vampire. Angelus and Darla had gone off somewhere when she found William, so they probably didn't know that she was actually gonna go ahead and sire someone, so they couldn't explain that it wasn't actually needed.

maybe, in Dru's mind, vampires rise for 'the grave' and not, you know, from 'the dead.'
 
Thanks for the answers. Just for reference, he talks about clawing his way out of the crave in After Life, which starts up where Barganing leaves off, so I thought was thinking it was in that ep..but its in After Life.
 
lol i can't believe the gang was stupid enough to raise her from the dead... yet not htink that if she came to life she would need to get out of the grave... :drunk:

The fact that they were selfish enough to bring her back pretty much shows that they weren't really thinking about her at all...it was all about them...as usual!..if I sound bitter its becuase I am!!
Just speculation here, but maybe Spike got buried later in his existence. He makes enemies really easily, and maybe someone tried to bury him to get back at him or something.
 
Touching on the religious here. Being buried in a graveyard according to the views of the church, then coming to life as a demonic entity, casting aside the religious overtones and giving God the finger.
So as Spike wasn't buried he would have been seen to be more acceptable to God than Angel as the wearer of the Amulet [it destroyed the evil entities, so not of WR & H much more likely to have come from God] and the recipient of the Shan-shu prophecy.
 
i dont know if it has been answered already, i havent read all the replies but He didnt say "i had to claw my way out of the grave too" he says he would have done the same thing too, not that he did.

I don't think he was ever like found dead my his Mom or whatever when Dru sired him so he never had an official burial, but because Drusilla (as someone said above) is a traditionalist in all things vampiric I think we can safely say that she would have buried him. I mean when she just puts Darla under a thin layer of dirt in season 2 of Angel she apologizes to the newly risen Darla saying she did the best she could, but it isn't the real deal (or something to that effect...).

Buffy lowers her hands, puts them behind her back, looks uncomfortable.

DAWN: Um, I was gonna fix 'em. I don't know how they got like that.
SPIKE: I do. Clawed her way out of a coffin, that's how. (to Buffy) Isn't that right?
BUFFY: (quietly) Yeah. That's ... what I had to do.

So, yes, at some point, he crawled out of a grave. And no, it's not specified exactly when, but we're given to understand that it was after he was turned, just like we see Angelus do.
 
Ok, i stand corrected, sorry, im wrong , and these guys are right. Shows how much i should pull stuff from memory.
 
I suppose another questioned linked with this would be "How did Spike and Dru get in?" Seen as his mother seemed surprised at their appearence and it seems unlikey she invited him in and Liam needed inviting in. It's possible that they could have had a servent living there.
 
I would say more than likely they would have had at least one servant...they looked fairly affluent
