Batsu, The True Meaning

Tara never got any stick (we all know she wasn't one for the timber) for falling for Willow, or maybe thats it.

Maybe the 'hate' for Satsu stems from the fact that she is the non-buffy part of a big change that most people don't like.

I (as has been stated by many others already) do enjoy Satsu, she's an interesting character... and brings a good mix to the fold. However, I would like to see a more main Scoobies centered arc. I want to see some (non sexy) B/W/X and possibly Gman action. I don't think that's too much to ask.

Also-Tara did get a lot of flak when she was first introduced. Now, of course she's one of the most beloved characters in the verse, but that was not always the case.

I think Satsu serves three purposes:

First of all, it goes to show Buffy's weak mental state. To me she seems depressed, maybe even more so than she was in season six. Naturally people are more prone to make mistakes in such a mental state. Due to loneliness, maybe so, it's been a solid year since she's been in a intimate relationship. Plus she's expressed that she misses her mother, along with separation from her sister, and Willow being on the other side of the world. She needed a woman in her life.

Second of all, I see Satsu as a personification of Buffy's punishment. She seems to get a kick out of relationships that aren't in her or her cause's greater interest.

Last of all, it could serve as massive foreshadowing. Batsu meaning punishment could foreshadow the punishment Buffy will endure caused by the relationship with Satsu, or a punishment for something greater, like awakening all the potentials in the world.

I agree that the whole Batsu thing was a mistake, but it really doesn't have as much to do with the girl/girl part as it does the fact that the general doesn't sleep with his or her second in command, because it can cause too many complications. The way everything worked out at the end of this arc is probably the best solution to the situation, but I hope that if it is re-visited in the future, as it almost certainly will be eventually, it's at least settled, as opposed to what usually happens between Buffy and her lovers: Angel leaves "for her own good," but keeps lurking around in the background; Parker turned out to be a total a**; Riley can't accept that he's the weak one in the relationship and runs off into the jungle; Spike burns to a crisp. Whatever else happens, it seems that Buffy always gets left. That's one of many reasons that I dread a Buffy/Xander relationship. Neither one of them ever have an affair that ends happily, and ultimately I think that they both deserve that happiness.

And if they eventually do get together, isn't that really the point? Xander has and always will be by Buffy's side and they already love each other and are completely comfortable around each other. And with Buffy always get left in the dust like you said, and Xander's girlfriends always getting killed, being with each other may be their only chance to actually be happy.

Given their mutual records with the opposite sex, though, after a one night stand that ends awkwardly, Xander will convince himself that he will never be Buffy's equal and she doesn't let him even be there to comfort her when Dawn develops a brain tumor, so he will leave for her own good in quest of the one thing that he thinks will make him truly worthy of her love. He will return just in time to save Buffy and the rest of the world by undergoing terrible torture before sacrificing himself to destroy an insane hell god'

While all of this is going on, Buffy will have somehow turned into a demon and will be attempting to eat his head off and deposit the eggs of her demon spawn in his corpse while arguing matters of finance with Giles.

I was always surprised that it was Batsu that stuck as a name for this particular 'ship. I mean, switch the names around in order before you merge them and you get Saffy. Much more appropriate.

Saffy... Sapphic... never mind... 😉
