I've gotta write a Magazine Article for my English Course at College and it's prooving very difficult to find a topic. It has to be interesting and factual...

Can you help me? 🙁
 
what kind of article does it have to be cos i have just done a pice course work for english as well. I wrote a review for a magazine for "Choesn" the last episode of buffy. but i dont think that it is very factual so mabye you can write something about one of your hobbies and stuff or something. sorry not very helpfull and also im not even sure if that made sense lol
 
Here's the task...

Write an Article for a general interest magazine, or the features section of a sunday newspaper, on a topic which interests you. It may be something with which you are already familiar, or something you would like to know more about. In either case, you will be expected to do some research.

The article should be mainly factual, rather than opinionative. (so i can't do a review) Remember that you are writing it for the general public, so you will have to make it interesting and accessible!

Suggested topics might be:

A modern movement in music, e.g. r&b, hip-hop, house or reggae

-A famous composer and his influence on music

-How DNA works

-What is genetic engineering

-The early development of computers

-The latest development in computers

It should be around 750 words long


My mind is blank... I don't want to write on any of those topics because they won't be very interesting! 🙁
 
You could always write about the impact that tv has on todays youth.

People are always complaining about something like the depiction of witchcraft in Buffy, and stuff. Do something relating to that. Plus, it's really opinionative, and you could do "research" by watching buffy amnd angel.

Dont you mean 'of course' lol...

Why dont you do it on current affairs like World Politics and where the world went wrong and how the UN is now a tootless Tiger or something along those lines? Thats what you would be writing about if you were a real journalist so it should impress your lecturers 🙂
 
I think that you should write about something that you are familiar with. Factual right? Just make sure you handle in an objective manner using accurate and specific examples supporting your facts. This said, if I were writing the article, I would write about how Buffy The Vampire Slayer is so dissapointingly underapreciated as a quality show of today, how it unfairly lumped with all the other sci-fi trash spewed out by the WB. More specifically, I would argue that this show is a positive influence for young adults, as it deals with real world issues in a non-confrontational manner, therefore just presenting the issues, as opposed to lecturing on them like so many issues of today, but also always showing that all actions (in most cases) have consequences.

Specific examples:
Addiction - Willows Magic "problem".
Drug use - Steroids in Go Fish
Teen sex and it's consequences - Surprise/ Innocence
Peer Pressure - The Pack
Rape - Reptile Boy (can anyone else say "phallic")
Pressure to succeed placed on todays youth - What's My Line 1,2

I could come up with another dozen or so (also, these are not all my personal interpretations, just some that can be argued.).

More simply, you could discuss the reality of fantasy, in Buffy, or in fantasy in general, discussing how everything is a metaphore for something real....

Just a sugestion.

It's so broad a topic, General interest, that that sometimes makes it most difficult.

If it was me I would do something on horse-slaughter. people are not aware of the true atrocities of this horrendous business. The pain, torture and in-humane treatment they go through just on the trip there. And a nail through the head into the brain is how they kill them, and yes they do often miss and have to hit them 2-3 times before they die. and hey, people don't want to eat sick or old horses meat, so i's usually young, fit, perfectly fine horses that are consumed. Afraid of mad cow disease, eat more chicken!!!!

Ok, I'm ranting. Don't mind me. I am totally against this practice if you haven't noticed. No offense to any of you people who may eat horse meat. Although if I can convince you not to, please please don't. If you knew what happened when they were slaughtered, you'd never want to even look at horse meat again.
 
well do you want to do something buffy related? if you do then kindred's idea sounds excellent.

what are you interested in?.....ok heres an idea, my friends wrote a paper on same sex marriges and the effect it has on children....but you can write a paper on anything...
 
Hmm, yep, the example of topic they gave at school aren't interesting !
I liked the one about impact on TV that dyingangel gave.
Or else, if I had to do it, I would probably do something on

- The increase of the internet & the problems it creates (I think to addiction)
- Cinema changes & diversity (like the increase of Bollywood movies, the domination of the american production, censorship & so forth)
- Increase of violence in schools (Bowling for Columbine & Elephant)
hmm, i could think more about it, lol, don't even know if it's the kind of thing that you asked for.

This might be a good thing for a discursive essay, which is the next thing i have to write. It's a chance to show opinion... but because i don't know much about the subject... I am swayed by what you have told me! The chances of me seeing another side to this argument are slim to nil so that may not be a good idea. I'll look more into this out of general interest for the subject being that i don't know anything! It sounds horrific. If i can find enough facts then this may well be a good article to write. Where does this kind of thing happen?

Thanks everyone... your answers are all so good. I don't know if i would get a lot of marks for writing about Kindred's thing, although it's a brilliant idea! I would never thought about that! I don't think it should be Buffy related though. Frenchy Faith's ideas are good... I especially like the Bowling for Columbine idea. I could probably get a vast amount of info on that! Remembering that it has to be mostly factual so it has to have some kind of statistic in it!
 
Hmm, I think you can find statistics about violence in school. Like I read an article not long ago that was giving statistic about it. There was less slaughter I think, or less youngster killed.
I thought as well to other topics, like disparition of old customs in different country, or disparition of some languages.
The culture in literature, new author vs classic, will the new last like some classic ones ? The amount of books like fantasy ones increase nowadays, or sommink like that.
I keep thinking if you need more idea.

I like the disparition of cultures thing... Like the way of the Samurai or something like that! But then again... I'd probably end up doing some kind of history paper... unless i found out about a few more recent ones! I'll be thinking about that one FF! *hugs*
 
OK thinking to my general studies lessons how about something on politics? Current politics... like the democrat primaries or something... or environmental/geographical like world development and aid? um soil erosion? sustainable development? GM crops...

OK, sorry these are coming right off the top of my head... um...

or TV... recent ended programme like the X-Files and Buffy and why it had such an impact on fans...

anyway- just a few thoughts...

It happens right here in the U.S. We have two facilities, i think both in Texas, but there is another one soon to open in Iowa I think, (I just read it in my newest magazine but forget where it was). Which I am very much against. There are many people, especially those who consume horse meat for fear of Mad cow disease who would be for it. But mostly they have no idea what truely occurs.

Sorry, ranting again. I have a very strong opinion on the topic, and could rant all day. Maybe i just shouldn't get started.

But if you are by any chance interested I can find good articles on both sides of the issue. I've looked into it alot. Although many times the pictures and articles are very graphic. Just to warn you.
 
how about... I like the horse slaughter idea. Because I know nothing about it and would be interested in reading... animal rights? Animal testing? Fox hunting?
 
how about the exotic animal trade in the Far East? Keeping of big cats as pets in the US?

again, just ideas- you're so lucky you get to write this 🙂
 
Wow, I may have started a little awareness here on the evils of horse slaughter.....
Large scary ugly evils.....truely horrible.....I need to stop now before I begin another rant.....
