Okay, BBtv is having a double screening "Welcome to the Hellmouth" and "The Harvest". I was just in IRC watching the chat conversation.

How about also discussing what you watched in here once the episode was over? That way we could get this section of the forum hopping, and involve other members who might not have been able to be in on the original chat.

Let's try it out!
 
Well its gets me everytime when the master says "You have something in your eye


I missed the first episode, but I was here for "The Harvest"
 
Okay, first of all, although we were a very small bunch (4 people actively watching) there, it was fun 😀 You other people should join as well 😀

Now something episode related.
What I really love is all this foreshadowing/word games in these early episodes.
For example (as I already pointed out in the IRC):
-Buffy talking about not having fluffy feelings towards the vampires... some episode later she falls for Angel
-Joyce saying it wil lbe the end of the world if Buffy doesn't show up at the Bronze (she had no idea, lol)
-Xander being utterly in shock about having a conversation about vampires (boy if he knew his upcoming years...)

Then there's of course the fun factor of seeing characters not well thought through yet. I mean, Darla and Angel, come on. Darla running away in terror just because of some holy water? Angel's funny lines (I don't bite....what a LIAR)

Buffy really punned her way through these first two episodes. My personal favourite is her standing in front of the mirror with the dress, saying "Hey, I'm an enormous slut"

It's also really fnny to see what people thought to be fashionable back in the days. Fashion anyone?



Okay, these were my thoughts, all very unorganized, but I'm still so in awe from al lthe Buffy watching 🙂

Haha yeah I love the way Buffy seems so much happier in these Seasons, much more carefree and jokey. She puns, and jokes and smiles and I love it, then it all starts to change... Right about the time she meets Angel. Blah, I thought relationships were meant to make people happier!? Okay, I'm getting off topic, so what else about these episodes?

It's strange watching Buffy struggling to fight a normal vampire.
Willow is as cute as a button.
Xander is still annoying.
Jesse is also annoying.
Cordelia is so mean to poor Willow, I just want to jump into my TV and punch her.
Giles is cute, if not a little scary.
 
I would say it's more when she loses Angel that she gets all serious. 🙂

These episodes are so refreshing to watch and as you said so different from the later episodes. Sometimes you could think it was a different show lol

Angel was holding her back from her slayerness; same way her friends held her back.

She only became 'serious' because she became more 'Slayer' and than woman. That is why Buffy weakened and what ultimately lead to the death of Kendra was she domesticated her.


But I digress..
 
I disagree - because in The Wish, Buffy is killed because she doesn't have the support of her friends that she once did. 🙂 I wrote a whole fanfic about it lol!

But that wasnt a real Buffy. You do not know the experiences and trials that she went through. Granted, you could say that without her friends she never would have lived (as Xander had to bring her back) but Buffy, much like Angel, had a demon inside her which wanted her to be seperated from the 'normal' world around her.

And the more powerful Buffy became, and needed to become, the more she had to feed the beast within her.

The only thing that differed is that those she surrounded herself with were 'gifted' as well. If things had remained the way there were in Season 1, you could not say her friends would still be a source of strength.

I mean, that is why with the introduction of Faith, she (Faithy) was shown as the superior slayer.

just realized I prolly should have not said faith was the superior slayer TO buffy! d'oh
 
When you're looking at slayers you have to look at many different variables as to what makes them good slayers. As Buffy tells Kendra, Kendra is a perfect fighter, but she lacks passion. Faith may not be held back by friends and emotions and a link to the world, but this is what makes her turn rogue. The only thing that saves Faith from the brink is Angels trust and willingness that Faith could be a better person.
Buffy having friends is what grounds her to the world around her, in particular in the earlier seasons, it's easy for people to bring up that Xander bought Buffy back from the dead, but people never seem to mention that Buffy was going to quit being a slayer until she spoke to Willow and she realised WHY she had to be a slayer, Buffy's friends and family were a constant reminder of who she is fighting for.

Bu that is why Buffy is an anomaly. Is she were a true 'slayer' she would not have let Angel (nor Spike) buddy up to her. Depending on your personal view she is either more or less than what a slayer should be.
We maybe should start a different thread, as this is supposed to be about the one (or two) episodes that were watched. I would hate to hijack the thread.
 
I'd say that this is a great topic to be discussing!

I agree that in season one (up until Buffy finds out she is prophesied to die), she is very care free and fun loving.

I think the best part of WttHM is when Buffy and Joyce are talking about her going to Bronze, and Buffy says "No, Mom, it's a nun club" 🙂
 
I have to agree with Buffy (our one lol) and say that Buffy (the one that slays) changes and becomes darker and closed off once Angel leaves. He provided a some sort of normal life for Buffy, especially before they knew about the curse. She could just be a girl in love with him. She didn't have to be the slayer. He is the only person in the entire series who doesn't demand that of her. When Angel was in the show he provided an emotional insight to Buffy that we just don't get again because she doesn't allow herself to be that open with anyone else.

It is so interesting to see how carefree and quippy she is at the very beginning. It's something that can be forgotten after seven years. I have to say it was a great way to introduce the show.
 
I gotta agree with kean, Even Spike didn't do that for her *ducks*

Which is why I think I prefer The earlier seasons to the later ones

I have a question. When Buffy first walks into the library and meets Giles, he plops a book on the counter entitled "Vampyrs" What's with this spelling version of vampire? Is this the way the word was written before?
