Because of the cancellation of the reboot, should there be more Buffy comics?

No they should try the animated series again. Great way to add more to the series, set back in season 1 to fill in season 1 more.. and include Darla, Cordelia, Joyce, Giles, Angel.. eventually Spike, Drusilla, Oz.. would be fun to have Kendra for more lost episodes set in between what’s my line and Becoming. could even introduce more characters or explore more of Jonathan, Larry, Percy, Harmony, Ethan, Jenny!! Snyder, Amy, Faith, Anya, Tara, Dawn etc. obviously would have to have other voice actors for Faith, Dawn & Xander (r.i.p.) etc. but would be so cool to have the original actors that are still with us reprise their roles. There’s also a lot more that could be explored in the college setting as well as with all the potential slayers who were severely under developed in season 7. Even Kendra.. and Faith went through it but was still ripe for further exploration and development (she def should’ve done the Faith spinoff instead of Tru Calling but it wasn’t meant to be I guess)!

I wanted this new series so badly but I’m almost more apathetic at this point to mask my deep anger about being teased into such excitement that it was happening— with SMG and I love Chloe’s work— only for Hulu to pull a big F U and we are back here again.. except worse than ever bc we were so close. Idk I think there is still hope for something to emerge bc there is still very much hype and passion for the IP clearly. And it had a good run with the comics but they need something fresh yet able to capture the nostalgia which an animated series could do. It’d also be way easier and cheaper than a live action show or movie(s).

Ideally, I see Buffy's future as being a comics property, if American comics can survive their near death experience. I would like to see Joss write his definitive version of a Frank Miller Batman story, something like "Buffy: Year One" and a Buffy story set in the current day where Buffy would be the same age as Kristy Swanson. Something that really could influence the brand for good, and not just derivative related media slop.
 
The Buffy comic license is owned at the moment, and comics were planned which I suspect were put on the back burner thanks to the reboot. So I think they will now go ahead again soon.

The thing that concerns me the most about an animated series is that AI could well feature strongly in its development in order to make it cheaper.

What do you think about a Slayers audiobook revival?
Yes, definitely would need some tweaking but it was a good starting point.

I would be happy to see that. True, it wasn't perfect, but it was a good starting point and there were were enough threads leading into season 2. Do audiobooks have seasons?
 
What I ask from IP right holders is apparently difficult: a good story, canon or otherwise. As simple as that.

I don't mind so much the media anymore.

Comic is as good as any. Don't see why they shouldn't go on even without New Sunnydale's show in the picture. I hope Dynamite'll go on with Kelly Thompson's projects for both Buffy and Angel.

I have faith in her. She is a good writer.

But I'll admit maybe is more complicated now that New Sunnydale is cancelled, because comic industry in USA is in crisis to say the less. Maybe they were confident in profitability of the future comic books because of the new TVs. But the show's been cancelled. And maybe that could cause that Dynamite will step down, if they didn't already.

Finger crossed they won't.

My suspicions are, that Slayers was "cancelled" due to licensing issues and probably brand management. I doubt the talent got tired of making it, the writers ran out of ideas or the project was unprofitable. Doctor Who has been doing audioplays for decades, with limitations on what era of the series they can be set in. There's no reason that anyone else can't do that as well.

Animation is just an audio play with better storyboarding. If Firefly does well, expect that door to be knocked.

Ultimately, I fear the real problem is licensing fees. Disney doesn't outright own Buffy, and it may be expensive to make some things.

I doubt it was a coincidence that it was cancelled shortly prior to New Sunnydale being started. I'm not so sure about licensing issues; admittedly, big companies aren't the best at this, but that is usually when it comes to how they behave toward small companies. I would have expected that Amazon would have made sure they got the proper rights.

Perhaps not so much "expensive" as "awkward to get everyone with a piece of the action to agree."

Good question. Maybe they're just referred to in numbers? (Book One, Book Two etc). Or series?

As long as it’s good I don’t care about AI. I could go deep into it how I do think it’s horrible how it’s replacing real artists (horrible for multiple reasons) and over reliance on cgi has always been horrible but there’s no stopping a.i. at this point so might as well embrace it and try to harness it; it’s not all bad anyway.
 
My experience with Buffy comics is that, whatever company has the licensee, they were just bad. Didn't capture the magic that was Buffy. The "canon" comics were so bad that they broke my willing suspension of disbelief and I have never gone back.

The Slayers audiostory was ok. It needed some work. I think that if it had gotten a 2d season, it would have been much better.

An animated series is interesting. Even though I did not care for the "preview"(?) we got (one can still find it on youtube - I watched it last weekend). I think that with the right showrunner and writers creating good to great stories that it could be excellent.

Personally, my favorite continuation is still the novels.

I remember when they first came out, it would be Joss unleashed. He wouldn't have to worry about budgets or studios or "cranky season 7 TV stars". He could make anything and it would be drawn.
Well people got there wish because he was clearly writing them on LSD 😐

It was a promising start. It wasn't great, but yes, season two could well have been better. Overall, I would rate it below seasons 1-5, but above 6 and 7. Rather a shame that it seems the reboot killed it. Maybe it will now get a second season?
 
No. They've been a dog's breakfast precisely because they don't have any of the limitations of TV. The post TV "seasons" were particularly awful.

I think fanfic is a much richer playground, and frankly many of the fic writers have a clearer and more nuanced understanding of the characters and universe. I just wish so many of the old fic sites had survived. So many coolstories have beeb lost.

Until true fans with professional writing and production experience are given input and freedom to create the next chapter of the BtVS world, the corporate idiots will continue to do stupid moneygrabs and make foolish decisions.
