Becoming Part 1/2

While not my favorite episodes of the entire series, I do think 'Becoming 1 & 2' is the show's best season finale ever. Everything that happened in the previous 20/21 episodes comes together to provide a modern masterpiece of television drama. So many things are going on at once, it's hard to keep track of them all. Plus, this episode lays the groundwork for many future developments in the series (Willow's becoming a powerful witch, Joyce finally getting a clue about what's up with her daughter) that missing these episodes makes you feel like you missed an entire season.

As usual, when Joss Whedon gets behind the typewriter and the camera, he makes the show the cinema in miniature it has always wanted to be.
 
The ending never fails to get to me no matter how many times I watch it.

"Close your eyes."

And the tears start rollin.
 
I Gotta Say the ending of becoming Pt 1 was one of my fav buffy scenes ever. i get so emotional when buffy realizes they tricked her right as kendra is getting killed. and when she runs in all slow mo and the whistlers voice talking a great line in the background and buffy running to kendra and holding her dead hand and the music playing, whenever i watch that scene i get so sad and just thinking about kendra is dead i miss her and i wanted her to stay so her and buffy could have gotten to know eacother better.as much as i LOVE kendra, faith would'nt have come if it wasn't for her death. and i LOVE Kendra & Faith and Buffy too of course.
 
I love these episodes. They are wonderful. I cried at the end when Buffy had to send Angel to hell. I think that this episode had the greatest fight sequence with the swords. I love watching it.
 
The best

Becoming pt 2 had to be the best episode ever I absolutely loved it, if the mayor andfaith were in season two it would have to be me favourite. And i didn't almost cry i did- it was sooooo unbelievably sad. Total Genious
 
Yeah I really liked that episode, in fact, I watched it last night just because I hadn't seen it in a while.

It was definitely a tear jerker.
 
I love the ep I love the flashback when Angel sees Buffy for the first time you can tell he's in love already.
 
These episodes were absolutely great, I mean they were very emotional and caused me to tear-up on numerous occasions.

- When Willow was in the hospital
- When Kendra died
- The slow motion
- When Buffy killed Angel
- The music that was tied into it all

It was truly a pair of two amazing episode and a great way to end the season, it gets me everytime. I can't help but tear up.
 
Sometime I come across forum's that have a thread for your favorite Buffy episode ever. Its hard to pick just one but I always pick Becoming pt. 2. I love these two episodes and I think they were the best of the entire series. They're jam packed with everything, action, comidy, lots and lots of drama, its like these two episodes were a mini movie or something their just that good.

I mean what's not to love, Buffy tells her mom about being a slayer, Spike teams up with Buffy to take down Angelus, Dru kills Kendra (very sad), Willow goes into a coma (very sad), Giles gets torchered, the battle between Buffy and Angelus was amazing! And then theres Buffy killing Angel and then leaving town which really got me going with the tears. It was the perfect end to the season.

One of my fav lines from those episodes is actually my signature...

Angelus: No weapons, no friends, no hope...take all that away and whats left?
Buffy: (closes her eyes and grabs the sword with her hands just in time) Me!

I think we really learn just how strong Buffy really is in these episodes and also that she's still just a teenage girl when in the end she has to run away from it all. It's a big milstone in the series.
 
Why is everyone of the impression that Buffy killed Angel at the end of this episode? Stabbing a vampire in the chest with a steel sword might hurt, but it certainly wouldn't be fatal. It could, in fact, have been his salvation, as it allowed him to take a weapon with him into the hell dimension.
 
I loved these eps! i watched part 1 just like....30 minutes ago! and i cried when Kendra dies, i liked her and the more i learn about the slayers the more i cry, like the sort lives and such!

I think it was because he was sucked into Hell. Back at the beginning of the show there wasn't much known about the different dimensions and how to open portals. Angel had been sent to a Hell dimension, and as far as Buffy knew he would never be able to get back to Earth 🙂
 
im a bangel fan so obviously i cried a lot.. and a lot and a lot..! i love that fight with the swords and when angel said: Now that's everything, huh? No weapons... No friends... No hope. Take all that away... and what's left?

the worst part was when she told him to close his eyes and killed him... and that music in the end ( full of grace) made me cry too.. was really sad!
 
Ah yes. The episode in which Xander failed to tell the cops that Buffy was not responsible for what happened in the school library. Which led to that ludicrous "Buffy on the lam" plotline.

This is also the episode in which we see Angel observing and falling in love with a fifteen year-old Buffy in a flashback, while she is sucking on a lollipop. Very disturbing. To this day, it makes me wonder about Angel.

I would imagine that those cops were under the same Mayoresque thumb as Snyder and the rest of the Sunnydale authorities were. Xander could have had video evidence that Buffy was innocent and they would still have gone after her.

As for Angel, I think when you get passed your 200th year on the planet the whole age thing becomes kinda redundant. Pretty much every human girl on the planet is technically too young for you.

There is when it comes to having sex. That wasn't what Angel was doing though, at least not in the example given by LadyLavinia above. All he was doing was watching her (for good reason) and realising that she was somebody very special. Can't blame the guy for that.

I realise that technically Buffy was still underage when they did sleep together (at least I believe so. Under Californian law the age of consent is 18, I think) but even that is hardly something a vampire over two centuries old would care about.

Look at it this way. In the UK you can legally have heterosexual sex at the age of 16. In certain parts of America it's 18. In other parts of the world it is even younger than 16. If humanity overall cannot agree on a single age that is correct for sexual consent than why would an ageless vampire far removed from human laws even give it a second thought?

It's a similar argument to the one I use with the whole Spike "attempted rape" thing. You simply cannot expect an immortal being to accept the (mostly inconsistent) laws of humanity as being where the line has to be drawn.
 
One of the things that impress me about the two episodes is how much backstory the creators of the show packed into them. In some ways this was an account of the "History of the Buffyverse", hence the numerous flashbacks. How Angel saw Buffy, yes, but also how Angel became a vampire through his encounter with Darla, and Drusilla in turn being victimized by Angel, the curse and Angel's decision to seek redemption. Yes, "Becoming" is an appropriate title.

I wouldn't have minded seeing more of Max Perlich as Whistler, either on BtVS or on Angel.

In addition this episode marks the beginning of the fascinating "working" relationship between Buffy and Spike which runs in one form or another for the rest of the series. And there is Willow's first breakthrough with witchcraft. Lots of background and context set in these two episodes, for what came before in the series and for what would follow.
 
I loved these episodes, they where possibly the most emotional and upsetting episodes in buffy and angel, first we have the death of kendra, the wonderful speech given by buffy to her mum and then the final stabbing scene with the wonderful buffy and angel theme tune and the end song by sarah mcloughlin- full of grace was enough to make me cry, never mind the rest which again was more than enough to make me cry
