Question Becoming (Part 2)

Just something i was thinking about since i was watching this episode a few days ago.

When Willow tells Xander to tell Buffy her plans to try a spell that will give Angel his soul back, but Xander dosen't tell Buffy, would you have done the same?

I know obviously in the situation,and everything that Angelus had done you can see why he didn't tell her, but was that more because of what Angelus had done, or Xander's "jealousy" i suppose,of Angel in general?

But even after Angelus had done, would you have done it different and told Buffy,Willows plan? Keeping in mind that had the plan failed then Angel/Angelus would have been killed anyway.

I'm probably going to be in the minority here but I wouldn't have told Buffy that Willow was trying the spell. I mean Willow had just woke up from a coma, she was weak and there was not guarantee that she would be able to do the spell. Telling Buffy could have meant that she would have stalled for time, giving Angelus the upper hand by him going all out on her. Her stalling could have killed her, and allowed Acathla to open his portal to Hell.

I don't think jealousy is an enough reason for Xander to kill Angel, we have seen an opportunity for him to have Angel killed before when Kendra suggested that Angel should be killed, Xander had defended him by saying, "Angel is our friend. Except I don't like him." If he wanted Angel dead, he'd have backed up Kendra on her suggestion or even helped her kill him.

Xander's reasons for lying are far more complex. Xander had gone there with the intention of telling Buffy that Willow will bring Angel back, but then he saw the hope in Buffy's eyes, heard it in her voice, it made him change his mind. Xander didn't want the world to end. Hating Angel made it easier for him to lie, but it wasn't the reason why he lied.

Exactly what [MENTION=7613]sosa lola[/MENTION] said: if Buffy was going to succeed in saving the world from being sucked into hell, she couldn't think about the possibility that the monster she was fighting might at any moment become the man she loved again. Also, thinking about that possibility would probably get her killed. So ultimately I think Xander did the right thing, but given the nature of the dilemma he was in I can certainly understand the perspective that he should have told her instead.

Personally? I'd probably have run up to her without thinking at all, arms flailing, shouting "Wait! Willow's gonna bring Angel back!" Then I 'd see the hope and love in her eyes and realize I'd possibly just made a huge mistake. That suddenly Buffy's job just became 1,000% more difficult. But that's the romantic sap in me. Dangerous!

I wouldn't have told her, but I wouldn't have changed what she said into "kick his ass" either. Buffy needed to focus on getting the job done one way or another, if she was pinning some hope on the spell and it didn't work then she might have slipped up and got herself killed- not to mention the whole apocalypse thing.

Xander lied to Buffy simply because he didn't like Angel. There is no doubt of that. I seriously doubt that he ever actually liked or completely trusted either Angel or Spike. He's just bigoted that way (he even pretended to hate Dracula, when everyone could see that they were fated to be together) Having said that, however, there was a very good chance that, if Buffy had known that there was the slightest chance that Angel could be restored to all of his ensouled drabness, she might have held back in fighting him, which would have gotten her killed and the world destroyed, both results highly undesirable.

So, regardless of his initial motives, Xander not telling Buffy about what Willow was trying might just be largely responsible for saving the world.

I suppose that if she did know she wouldn't have had to "fight" him as such, she could have distracted him long enough for Willow to get the spell done without having to actually fight to kill him. Or indeed to give him the chance to kill her.

So either way i suppose Xander was both wrong and right at the same time. Whether or not he was more wrong or right is just everyones own opinion on it 🙂.
