erm... the show would pretty much have been over? Even with whoever (TPTB? the First?) opening that portal to bring Angel back, Buffy would long since have been dead after the century in the hell dimension... and without Buffy, no BtVS.
Besides, Buffy did go to her personal hell, too... that's what "Anne" was all about - both metaphorically and literally. 😉

Before anyone else makes that pun... I do have to say, "To hell with Bangel!" would have some satisfaction in it, though. 😛

did the Claddagh ring have any significance at all with Angel's return?
I don't think so. It was an ordinary ring. Angel was brought back because he's a pivotal figure in the Apocalypse, and the First, TPTB and Wolfram & Hart all wanted him on their team. Best guess would be one of those three groups brought him back. The First claimed it, but it was never verified, and Buffy was pretty skeptical...
