A biblical beetle invasion has started along the beaches of Mar de Ajó and San Bernardo in Argentina.

The strange phenomenon surprised locals and tourists, but the cause of this insect plague remains unexplained.

Why is it called a biblical invasion?

One of the plagues of Egypt in the Bible was a plague of locusts that stripped all the leaves off the plants. This may turn out to be the same order of magnitude. The end result of the ten plagues of Egypt was that Pharaoh Rameses II let the Israelite slaves go.

I have a vague memory of some of the plagues but none of beetles.
I thought that the picture was just of a whole load of beetles, that it was termed 'biblical' purely because there was a lot of them.

What is it about a mass influx of beasties to really creep you out? I like beetles, but I don't like beetles en mass. This isn't me being beetleist, I'd feel the same if it were fish or birds too....

It's called Trypophobia. Everyone has more or less some Trypophobia in them. Our ancestors who didn't, were purged from the human gene pool because they don't fear parasites enough to get away from them.
