So, I'm re-watching season five.
What I love so much about Buffy is that, everything I watch it , I see something new.
Anyway.
So, my question is: is it really Ben's fault he's under Glory's control? Did I miss something? Does this justify killing him? (as Giles does late on, in "The Gift")

i too am currently watching season 5 its a good point i've not thought about this before.... *wonders why i haven't*

it is intressting though especially as he claims he is always cleaning up her mess with the queller demon too

wonder if he summoned glory once or something?

hope someone has an answer lolz

I've always wondered about Ben as well who came first Glory or Ben? and how, when, were?! and Go Giles I'm glad he killed him/them! Glory would have just come back for revenge which wouldn't have been good.

I think killing Ben was just doing something for the greater good. He may have been killed, but it woulda been nothing compared to the number of people who would have died if Glory had re-surfaced.

they said that ben was created a man already with false memories, etc, much like dawn, in order to be the vessel in which to contain glory. so no, it wasn't really his "fault" per se, no more than being the key was dawn's fault, but dawn didin't summon a queller demon and attempt to sacrifice any innocent people. i think that giles knew that if he didn't kill ben, glory would find a way to come back in him. giles did what buffy couldn't, even if it wasn't completely moral. it was for the big picture.

"Gregor: Such was her power. They feared she would attempt to seize their dimension for herself, and decided to strike first. A great battle erupted. In the end, they stood victorious over the beast ... barely. She was cast out. Banished to this lower plane of existence, forced to live and eventually die trapped within the body of a mortal ... a newborn male, created as her prison. That is the beast's ... only weakness:"

It wasn't his fault, he was born with Glory in him. Though if you want to be harsh I suppose you could say it was his fault for not killing himself, I assumed he knew Glory was killing. I can't remember much detail about his life before Sunnydale. Actually thinking about it I always assumed Glory had just emerged in Season 5 but I remember Ben saying Glory has ruined everything for him meaning she has been around for a while.

If so why is she only looking for 'The Key' now and say Season 5 is when she found out where it is, it's way too much of a coincidence that Ben got a job as a doctor there, did he do that because Glory needed to be in Sunnydale? I mean they don't communicate, did her minions says 'Her magnificence wants you located in this town she has business here"'?

No, it's not his fault that Glory is in him. Yes, he chose to save his own ass, not heroic, but human. Most people would do the same. Giles did need to kill him though, somebody needs to do the necessary thing. If Ben hadn't have been killed then Glory would be alive and the scoobies would have a psycho-pissed hell god after them minus Buffy. Not good.

I think Giles did the right thing, it was a rock and hard place. Glory living would have eventually meant the worlds destruction one way or another

That is incorrect; The world was in danger due to the portal, not Glory. The portal could only be opened at a specific time, which is why Glory was in a hurry, because as long as she was inside Ben she was losing herself, if she didnt make the portal before it shut she would 'die' Saying Giles killed Ben to protect the world is wrong. He killed Ben because he has no problem with murdering people. Buffy killed herself to save the world, by getting rid of the real problem.

I've always thought Ben was innocent just like Dawn, ok some of the choices he made was wrong towards the end but all he wanted was Glory gone so he could be him. I don't think a lot of people realised that Ben and Dawn are almost the same in how they came in to the world through magic and to help protect the world. Ben was designed to imprison Glory and Dawn was designed to be protected by the slayer and stop Glory using her.

As for Giles killing Ben I think he was protecting everyone by getting rid of Glory quicker. Yes she would have come after Buffy if she had survived and that would have probably gone on for quite some time. Glory was extremely strong, even her hell Gods couldn't contain her completely and poor Ben had to live with the fact no matter what Glory was always going to be with him. I think from the start Ben was always meant to be a tragic story, he was completely innocent and his fate was always going to be brutal no matter what happened.

I have to agree with scobro on this one, the real problem was Glory in combination with the portal. Glory got weaker every minute. Killing Ben because he and Glory might become a problem again sometime in the future, though not as big is they were before since there is no more portal, is not a very nice thing to do. He made some wrong choices in his life, but in real life, we don't give people a death penalty for doing something stupid, but for doing something majorly wrong. And, at least in my opinion, he didn't do anything majorly wrong.
So yes, I think he was innocent, he just got sucked into things he really didn't want to be sucked into. And, as he influenced Glory, Glory influenced him, which could explain why his solutions to problems she'd caused where a bit demon-ish and sticky.

This is how I saw it, too.... I was sad that they had to kill him, 'cause I don't think he was evil, but I think it was one of those moments where it had to be done, and YAY for Giles for doing it.

As I got it:
Ben was unlucky. He was chosen to host Glory, and had to live with her as the parasite.
In the end, the thought of finally getting a life of his own without Glory, made Ben do what almost anyone would have done. Fight for his life

Here's an interesting thought to ponder while we're on the subject of Ben and Glory...if Buffy had hooked up with Ben and "coffee" evolved into sweaty fun...what would happen if he...changed into Glory mid-sweats? ::huh1::

It wasnt Bens fault he was sharing a body with Glory, but i had no sympathy when he was killed, he almost deserved it to me. Its not even that he wanted to save himself instead of Dawn, but just that he didnt even try to help matters. I just cant believe him in Spiral, when he goes to help(?is it an injured Giles?) knowing that he could change back to Glory at any second, and thats exactly what happened, and Glory takes Dawn. And a couple of episodes earlier he totally messes up killing a minion, who then goes and tells Glory he now knows the key is ''an innocent''. So although it wasnt his fault he was Glory, it was his fault he messed up at almost every opportunity. I hate Benjamin.

LMFAO!!! That would have made for a VERY interesting scene, to say the least!!!!

I mean if Giles didn't kill her she would re-emerge and probably kill Buffy, meaning there would be no one around for the next apocalypse.

Even funnier - What if Glory was having sex with someone and turned into Ben? I mean their penis's would like merge together?

lol, wtf's wrong with you?

That would just be unspeakably hot...but would Glory be able to take part in the act of fornication without killing the other person? I mean, get her excited and you'll be through a wall...a Glory 'gasm would probably cause an earthquake. : erm :

Sounds quite promising ^^
I mean their penis's would like merge together?
*smartassing in with genetic/anatomical knowledge* The *ahem* intruding one would get (probably painfully) "shoved out" by a scrotum closing up... as that is the anatomical counterpart of the labia, with the penis equivalenting (<< is that even a word?) the clitoris. So, no merging. 😉

Gee, we're gonna manage to get this thread moved to the adult section (read: deleted, lol) if we go on like that...
