'Beneath You' - 7.02 Discussion Thread

I thought the episode was awesome. The interaction between Spike and Buffy was really well done. Magikal_Faithful, Spike's Princess posted what I think is a dead-on explanatoin of Spike's condition over on the spoiler page. Spike seemed to confirm it when he said something like "they're all in here". By the way, did anyone else just crack up when Nancy asked if there was any of them who hadn't slept with each other, and Spike and Xander looked at each other? That had me bustin a gut.
 
Last night's episode was okay. I was yelling for Anya to kick Spike's butt!! He had no right to hit her like that. I'm so glad that Buffy figured out that Spike has a soul now. Plus, go Dawnie for lighting a fire under Spike's butt about touching Buffy!! Woo hoo!! I'm glad that Dawnie is getting a little tougher. I can't wait until Willow comes home next week!!!😀 😀
 
Anyone figure out why Spike could hit Buffy in last night's epi (before she kicked his butt)?

I loved the writing in the Buffy/Spike scene. I love how the audience knew what he was talking about (the spark) before the character...

I don't much care whether B/S or X/A get together but don't keep going around and around with it. GRRR ARRGH!!

I'm not giving up altogether, but I'd these story lines finished soon. Like, within three weeks. Or less.

Thank you. 😛 Anyway, I have to agree with you; I disliked it. I think this episode was worse than the premiere. Willow was in all of two mintues. With all that happened last year with her...they absolutely do not have enough about her in the episodes so far. That's why I'm really expecting, from what I've read about the episode, that next week's will be overwhelmingly better than the last two.

Maybe I'm just not getting it, or something, but the Spike parts were just...bad. I can't come up with a better word. Basically, the only parts I liked were with Willow and Giles in England, and Anya at the Bronze. So sorry for being Negative Gal.🙁

That was so noticable; I clearly saw it the second he faced the camera. It looked really bad; the other seasons had better vamp faces
 
I'm with the "I didn't think it was that great crowd"

The only things I found remotely curious were the girls being killed and Dawn suddenly being all Big Sis like.

The worm attacking from underground was a little to "Tremors" like for me. I enjoyed Spike's dialect, but I'm still lost as to what he and Buffy are supposed to do. The two of them are obviously not going to be together, so why keep pushing it?

I'm glad Willow will be back next week, but I hope she takes more of a front seat in the cast. Xander and Anya just seem to be filling the time if you ask me. I really think they'd have done much better staying together than parting. What other part can Anya play now except vengeance demon who give's the scoobies problems? We've already been through that before. I look for her character to be departing in one way or another.

I didn't hate this episode, it just didn't take me anywhere new. It was a solid episode 2, nothing more, nothing less.

You might think that Buffy and Spike will never be together, but don't forget.. people change and often times events occur that change things as well. Also, knowing the genius that is Joss, Anya and Xander's parting will definitely mean something, ie. Anya as a vengeance demon will play a role in the future.

Anyway.. I didn't mind the worm deal... this season is all about "going back to the beginning" and its theme is "power". Remember the olden days, when Buffy epps had one baddie per ep, each being pretty fun and corny in a way? Well that's what Joss is trying to do here.. bring the traditional elements of the show back in after Season 6 (which was awesome, by the way) that dealt with character development and put storyline in the back seat.

I'm really looking forward to the Big Bad (I hope they actually have one... I think the shapeshifter was Spike's imagination). It's probably going to be a direct result of "something's coming", of course. Plus, the robed assassins are very cool.

I didn't really like last nights ep either. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it. James did an EXCELLENT job last night, no denying that. But the thing I didn't like was the fact (even though Joss and Sarah have said there wouldn't be on various interviews) there may still be a chance for the Buffy/Spike couple. I really, really, really didn't like that coupling and really, really, really don't want them back together.

You don't need to worry about that. It will never happen. I think that Tara said it best:

WILLOW: I just don't see why he couldn't end up with Esmerelda. They could have the wedding right there. Beneath the very bell-tower where he labored thanklessly for all those years.

TARA: No, see, it can't, it can't end like that, 'cause all of Quasimodo's actions were selfishly motivated. He had no moral compass, no understanding of right. Everything he did, he did out of love for a woman who would never be able to love him back. Also, you can tell it's not gonna have a happy ending when the main guy's all bumpy.

This is just a fact that I am going to have to live with (because I DID want them together again). I still don't want to believe it though. I too wish that they would just get on with it, end it, and stop torturing us.
 
The only thing I liked about the episode were the bad corny monster (because the monster-of-the-week eps were the best), Spike and Xander when asked if anyone didn't sleep together (holy shit that was funny) and at the end when Spike is all 'Can we rest now?'. I was watching it and was just a little bit sad. I personally don't enjoy the idea of Spike being all soulful, I didn't like him after season 4 being chipped but it is so far being done tastefully by Joss. I actually felt bad for Spike at the end when he's hugging the cross, which is a feat that I must give much credit to Joss for. Some very noteable moments in a not so great episode.
 
I thought last night's episode was very good. I think some old issues are being resolved via Buffy/Spike and Xander/Anya and that's OK. The flow of the story, the charcterizations, the hint of the big bad -- all these were handled quite well.

Am I right that Nancy was played by Kaarina Aufranc? I can find very little on the internet about her.

Remember last season we found out that he can hit Buffy because of the whole she died and came back to life thing. 🙂
 
OMG! I just got to see S7 ep 2 today and James Marsters' performance is just simply outstanding. That final scene at the cross is amazing. I am glad he is still in this show although he would be THE choice to go for in another spin-off should BtVS ever come to an end. I'd prefer that rather than having Dawn or anybody else replace SMG.

and how come everyone thinks spike and buffy are over?
i mean....she's "allowed" to like him now since he has a soul. i hope they get back together but have a real relationship this time. (or maybe she'll go out with the new principle..lol)

and dawn telling spike off made me laugh...cuz u know...she's a BIG girl now...hahahaha...please
and is it me or did xander get even more chubbier than last yr?

...o back to dawn....isn't she not really human cuz she came from a mystical ball of energy? so can't spike kill her without the chip goin off? just a thought.....sorry to those who like dawn...she just really bothers me...especially after last season.

I'm only 20 minutes into the ep but so far I like it. I'm liking how it does have that old buffy feel to it. They have those fun little on liners and it's cool to see it like it used to be even though theres so much more going on these days with the characters.
 
i couldnt watch the ep tuesday night cause i was busy, and i taped it, but the tape ran out about half way through...if someone could just give me a summary of what happened in the ep, i would appreciate it....

And I'm not entirely convinced that Buffy and Spike are over. In fact, I WANT them to get together. I want Buffy to forgive Spike, and I want Buffy to help Spike get over the whole now-I-have-a-conscience-and-have-to-deal-with-all-the-shit-i-did issue, and I want Spike to forgive himself for all the shit he did. I want Spike to do some wonderful deed at the end of the season that he gets rewarded for by becoming human again, and I want Buffy and Spike to live happily ever after. But do I actually BELIEVE that it is going to happen? Of course not. I CAN'T believe that. If I believe that and it doesn't happen, then MY heart will break. I just have to live with the fact that the story of Buffy and Spike is a Tragic story, not a romantic one. If I don't look at it this way, then it would be too depressing for me.
 
Hi all. I have to say I was suprised to read how many of ya didn't really like the ep that much. However, I'm really glad that there are people who see the eps differently b/c it's neat to read about the views of what's going on in the show from a different perspective. So thanks 🙂
Anyway, I loved it very very much. That last scene was incredible. The very last shot was just amazing. I liked how B finally brought up the attempted rape - started to deal with that incident. And although I miss Willow, I like how they are gradually bringing her back in; I think it sorta suits the whole sitch b/c she was so evil and now we are getting glimpses of her recovery and remorse - slowly bringing her back kinda thing.
Two things: the girls at the beginning. Does anyone else think that they could be the 'potential slayers' and evil is trying to kill them off? I guess what could be wrong with that theory is that no matter what, another is always chosen...hmm....very interesting. And that Buffy is having "the dreams" again.
Second: I'm still not entirely certain what is going on with Spike really. First I thought maybe he was acting it out - trying to confuse Buffy and all. But then that last scene - wow. I'm interested to see what people think. Is he sorta going insane? Is he still bad? Will he deal or is just going to struggle with the "william" side??
Ok - so I'm really really excited about this season and just feel like I can never wait until the next ep!! 🙂

Did anyone else think Anya was sounding like Cordy when she was having a go at Xander?
