As for the definition of a breakout performance, I am not thinking of a person who just recently did something big. Alyson was last on the small screen two years ago and people already know who she is. Breakout, in my book, is someone who has not done anything big or at least not in a very long time to the point where no one really remembers them. Jamie has not been in anything big and Neil has made a comeback. Breakout has to make someone sit up and say, "Wow"! Hope that was specific enough for you.

Sure, that should do. I wanna try again then.

Wentworth Miller - I knew him from the Buffy episode Go Fish, but that was all. Now he stars in what might be called the breakout hit of the 2005-2006 season.

Emily Deschannel - Did some some supporting work.

http://imdb.com/name/nm0221043/ but now she's a star on a hit.

Jason Lee - Did some supporting work on TV and film, as well as voice-over work.

http://imdb.com/name/nm0005134/ but personally, I'd never heard of him. Now he's big enough to be asked to guest on SNL.

Never heard of Jason Lee? He's one of my favourite actors! So funny! Love Almost Famous

Yeah, he's one of my favourite actors now too. I had to think hard to remember who he played in Almost Famous though. He was the up and coming rock star the main character is assigned to cover for a story, right?

I stand by my original point. In my opinion, according to SP's definition, being known by only a comparatively small group, principally as a supporting character in a few cult films (http://www.thespinningimage.co.uk/cultfilms/displaycultfilm.asp?reviewid=314 ) offers room to be considered a breakout star, when you go on from there to become big enough for SNL to come calling. I think he was also well known by the skateboard set before Earl wasn't he?

Yeah. He was a pro skater. Then he started acting. I have most of his movies.

He was the singer of the band the boy was writing about in Almost Famous

Don't you wish he'd been given the Matt Damon part in Dogma as originally planned, instead of being stuck playing Azrael? Which one was Azrael anyway?

No way. Azrael was the best character. He ws the demon that orchestrated the whole thing.

I need to see that one again. I don't remember it that well. Alanis Morrisette was naked right? : scotty :

For all the mention of breakout performers, no one has mentioned anyone from Invasion.

What about Tyler Labine. Sure he's been in a bunch of stuff before, but not like this.

Of course maybe im just upset cos I just found out that it seems to have been cancelled. I dont know why. Its such a great show. And I hate how they ended it.

Ohh i also forgot most of the Invasion Cast, all doing a good job in a mediocre show(in my opinion)
I didn't mention specific names, but i did say Invasion😉

TeentitanWell then doesn't that make Neil the breakout performance of the year? If the character you play supports the show then to me that means best breakout performance of the year. Now next season HIMYM has a chance to develop the other characters to keep Barney "fresh" instead of going stale. Whereas the writers now have a chance to expand Jamie's character next season because the rest of the cast props her up during her character development.[/QUOTE said:
Not at all, it just means he is 'the best of the bunch' - I would say #best of a bad bunch, but i need more episodes before that.
Fact is, although he is funny, he may even hold the show that in no way makes him the 'Break-Out' performance. If each role in the show was mastered and every single one of the cast were perfect(in my mind the ONLY sitcom to ever manage a perfect cast to date is Frazier-others have come close but this show just wins on every level) and his character still shone like a beacon in the seas of sitcom success, then yes he would be 'Break-Out' but as it stands, he is the only one, in my opinion, from that show that could even be considered in this league.
Where as, Joy is just magnificent amongst a great cast.

But to be honest, if i had to choose from the defined parameters i wouldn't pick her, personally Deschannel would be the fave contender, and if Thyne(also from Bones) could be in there he would be my choice.

Maybe Neil would have been better in a poll of best resurrection of a tv career for the year.
For me best breakout actor was Wentworth Miller. Small bit parts in movies/tv shows but then along comes Prison Break. If you look at his character over the course of the season he showed a lot of talent and potential for even more.

Yeah, he would have won that catagory hands down🙂
Although i remember Miller from Buffy, most recently(a couple of years) the role that comes to mind is his one in Joan of Arcadia, when they were setting him up to be a 'Joan gone wrong' someone who not only stopped listening to God but had turned his hand to destroying Gods work to test him, it was appearing to be a test of Wills between the Joan character and Millers that never got resolved because of cancellation......ohh how i wish for just one TVM
