Best BTVS Season

definitely the first season because without it...there'd be no following seasons! and also, it was when i first started watching it, from the very beginning, which makes me one of the ancients: who's seen everything on buffy for the past 6 seasons. whoo! go ancients!
 
Honestly, I really liked season 5 the best, Glory was my favorite big bad, lots of big stuff happened, and it was SO much better then season 4. And season 3 and 2 would be right behind S5 in my rankings.
 
I liked season two the best. I also liked seasons three and four. Hell now that I'm thinking about it I liked seasons one, five and six. Guess I just love the show in general. But season two is still my favorite. Nothing will ever beat B/A and S/Dru together.

I totally agree with everything you just said! Lol, about B/A and S/D forever, about loving all seasons, and about S2 being one of the best of the best (along with S3, of course!)! Lol.
Archamage48 - thats an interesting and rare opinion. I liked Glory and S5, but i can definetly say it wasnt one of my fav seasons or one of my favourite big bads.

Season 3. All the episodes are class, written brilliantly. 😀 But all the seasons are great, Season 3 just stands out a little more. 🙂
Season 1 was good for the first season, setting up the characters nicely.
Season 2 was really good, but there were a few episodes that weren't as good as they could have been.
And Season 4, well I actually thought it was a great season. Some really good episodes in there, maybe one or two not as, but still a good season overall. 🙂
 
I've got to agree with most of the others on this one. I seem to keep watching season 3. But has anyone else noticed the sometimes poor quality of filiming on season 2? In some scenes the picture quality is pretty poor...or is that just my vids? 😛

You definitely know what you're talking about. LOL Nothing will ever beat season2. It was the best season by far. In some forum or other Oz went on about why it was the best, so I'm just not going to try to explain. Oz puts it best. And one other thing is for sure: nothing will beat Buffy/Angel and Spike/Dru. 😀

This is such a difficult question because each season is marked with both utterly fantastic and mind-numbingly bad episodes. But I tend to view the seasons from a distant standpoint, that is to say, the story arc for the season.

Season One was merely good. Overall it was filled with what I like to call "Monster-of-the-Week" episodes--so we don't get a real good sense of the characters in this season; they don't grow quite as much as they do in future seasons.

Season Two, on the other hand, witnesses a number of changes within the characters. Apart from the various relationships that emerge, the narrative takes a somewhat darker tone in examining the complexities of life, as witnessed in 'The Dark Age', 'Innocence', 'Passion', and 'Becoming Pts 1 & 2'.

Season 3, likewise, advances the character arcs. We get a better sense of the increasing power struggles between many of the characters (i.e. Buffy/Faith, Buffy/the Council, Angel/Himself). This season is filled with both humor and consequence.

I understand Season 4 is widely regarded as the worst season. Sure, there is a lack of interest many of us have with the Initiative and Riley. However, this season brought me several of my favorite episodes: 'Hush', 'Something Blue', 'Wild At Heart', and 'The Yoko Factor'. Moreover, I think this season, although not my favorite, has more good episodes than the others.

Season 5 was quite a departure from the previous years. Buffy has a growing interest in her heritage, Dawn is at once human and mystical energy, Spike becomes, more or less, a supporter of the Scoobies. But aside from the last five or six eps of the season, I found it missing something.

Season 6, I have to say, is probably my favorite. I could go on for a long while about this, but I'll just say that S6, although dark and depressive, was ultimately what the show is about: humanity. If you really want some detailed explanations about why I love S6, then check out some of my posts in the S6 section.

I actually prefer story arcs, character developments and some form of 'big bad' - they tend to make for more exciting, enthralling and omg-i-cant-wait-for-next-week series, IMO! Lol.
Jenni - i thought you'd say S6, but out of S1-4 (since, after all, that was the question! Lol), what was your favourite? Also, do you like monster-of-the-week episodes/seasons?

I do, in fact, enjoy "Monster-of-the Week" eps if they are pertinent to the overall story arc of the season. This happens rather often. For example, my favorite ep of all time, 'Hush', uses its silence in much the same fashion as 'Once More With Feeling' uses music. Both episodes invoke truth; that is, through the silence/singing secrets are revealed that otherwise would have remained hidden. Yet 'Hush' is about the monsters and defeating them.

The ones I don't enjoy as much are eps like 'I Robot--You, Jane' and 'Some Assembly Required'. I find that the characterization is often lost in them.

As for my favorite season of 1-4, I just might have to go with 3. Although S2 was outstanding, S3 touched on something deeper for me. Perhaps it is because of Faith and her affinity for violence and recognition. She mirrors the dark side of Buffy that Buffy keeps suppressed. I find that fascinating because Buffy is our heroine and seldom reverts to the darkness inside herself. Also, Faith's inferiority complex is inveigling as well; she knows she will never match up to Buffy's morality and her jealously is dangerous. Still, S2 is a close second. After all, killing the only man you love--how does it get any messier? Overall, S1 was my least favorite, perhaps because it was only half a season and didn't have the time for those compelling character arcs.

agreed. motw episodes such as 'i robot, you jane', 'doublemeat palace' and 'beer bad' were terrible, and i don't see the point to them.

'hush' was brilliant, as was 'once more with feeling'. not sure whether to count 'omwf' as a monster-of-the-week or not though, a lot of things important to the story arc happened in that episode.

I dont mind monster-of-the-wekk episodes, and as ive said before, prefer episodes necessary and revealing of the story arc and characterisation.
I think omwf is one of those eppys jenni was talking about - "I do, in fact, enjoy "Monster-of-the Week" eps if they are pertinent to the overall story arc of the season." is what she described them as.

I do like eps that contribute to the story arc most, but I still like monter of the week eps. I thought Doublmeat Palace was kind of strange, but I like the occasional monster of the week episode. They can be really funny. And sometimes you need a relief from the dramatic story line. 😉

I didnt actually like that episode much either, revenge demon, but QofB86, i agree definetly that an occasional pure monster-of-the-week story with absolutely NO significance to the story arc or characterisation can be a well-deserved relief from a very heavy story line! Except i hate it when something HUGE has just happened in said storyline and they cut to a monster-of-the-week episode straight after, giving no details on this dramatic twist in the story, as if its forgotten. Thats the only thing about them that 'gets my goat'! Lol

Like 'Go Fish'. It's not that bad of an ep, but its timing is awful...right before the two-part finale. I totally agree, Spike Lover.
