Id go with Angelus. Legendary.
I think it was because he had personal ties with Buffy and the scoobies that made him even better.
I mean, Glory and the Mayor etc, were just baddies with a mission, who would have done what they did with or without Buffy being around.
But Angelus, he was not only created by Buffy, but had a personal relationship with her.
The way he went after Jenny too, just because he knew how much it would hurt the scoobies.
That to me, makes him the most evil and sinister of all the bad guys.

Honestly, it's a difficult vote. All of them had their qualities about them that made them good Big Bad's.

I WILL however say that I think The Master had the most wasted potential out of all of them, and had they known the show was going to continue, it would have been interesting to see him be a continuing Big Bad, and see the final season deal with them finally figuring out a way to get rid of him once and for all.

I love villains with humanity because that's what makes them so funny. I love the evil evil ones too for the art and the dramatic effect. But enjoy watching the funny ones more, they entertain me more.

I was afraid that this question would come up one day. And I really have a touch time deciding between Glory and the Mayor, they're both what I said above.
I ended up choosing the Mayor, he's lines are better, and the funny ones are funnier than Glory's IMO.

The Mayor. He was the best. Too bad he didn't have more screen time. 🙁 Angelus a close second... That dude is such a douchebag!

I am going to go with Angelus, he was just so darn mean!! Followed closely by the Mayor.
There was always something i liked in each of the villains, but Angelus was just too bad!

Angelus was sick, twisted and he knew how to get to everyone. He scared Buffy in a way no other villain could, by getting into her head so easily it was even scary to us. And the killing Willow's fishes? Brilliant (in a very twisted way).

For me it's Glorificus!!! I love her so much - she's such a geeat character! She can be hilarious but also really scary in her own way just by her sheer strength and ability to make ppl go insane! She has some great lines, is really hot and her storyline is exciting to watch! Angelus is a v close second!! Some of his scenes are really chilling like in Passion when he killed Jenny. Plus 'to kill this girl you have to love her' is a great line!!

Thus was so difficult. I picked Angelus in the end because of his personal connection with Buffy as well as the fact that I loved how that whole storyline shows a very different side to Buffy, I think it made her stronger and more of a force to be reckoned with. In all fairness though Angelus, The Mayor and Glory would tie for me they were all fantastic.

I picked the Mayor, but I also love Angelus & Glory. I adore Nathan Fillion and I did like him as Caleb. I wish they had done something a big different with him. Make him The Big Bad instead of just an agent of the First, maybe?

You could sign me up for a campaign to retcon that, any old day. 🙂 The First was such a lame concept, IMO... while Caleb was pretty much the scariest, non-monstrous villain (thus, excluding Gnarl, Der Kindestod, and the Queller... argh :aah: ) to be on the show.

As for the poll - I'm really torn between Angelus and Dark!Willow, can't decide which one to vote for. Before the comics ruined a lot of S2 for me in hindsight, I'd probably have gone with Angelus.

I really like Nathan Fillion, but I really disliked Caleb. However, he's much better than the First. Also, he did most of the work.

The Master! I love his fruit punch mouth 😀 Hihi, that's a true story but I'll admit that he wasn't the most formidable of villains so.... I chose Angelus... cause to kill this girl, you have to love her.

I was torn between Dark Willow and Angelus. Dark Willow was incredibly powerful, she seemed so much more of a threat than Glory or The Mayor etc. I dont think Buffy's defeats come from the other villain being stronger though, I think its the emotional battle that she has to face. If the Dark Willow storyline had had a few more episodes to run across and it had come down to a battle between Buffy and Willow, I think Willow would have been the greatest villain of all. It would have been very difficult for Buffy to kill her best friend, not because of Willow's powers but because she was Willow.

That's why I chose Angelus. He wasnt just a physical battle for Buffy, she literally had to kill the love of her life to save the world. Not to mention Angelus was incredibly cruel and manipulative.

It was between Glory and Dark Willow, but I went with Glory since Willow is evil for such a short amount of time.

I really liked the Glory storylines, but Angelus as a big bad just brought so much baggage with him that it was great great storytelling. Willow could disappear from the show for all I care - but she was slightly more interesting when she went dark. Slightly.

🙂

well said
You never did like Willow, I never used to understand that until I started the re-watch and she does have an irksome quality. While I don't have your intolerance level to her, the shine is most certainly off for me.

I'm also going to go with Angelus. For me, the reason he made such a good 'big bad' was because we had all grown to love him and were attached to him as the hero type, so to turn that on it's head held more power.

While Adam was not a particularly awesome bad guy, I enjoy watching him because George Hertzberg is just amazing and I got nothing but love for the guy.

I loved Adam, its rare find someone else that likes him :)
I will go with the mayor.
The way he could be the nicest guy in the world and at the same time be absolutely ruthless was great fun. Always enjoyed his scenes.

Without contradicting my post in the Angelus/Angel thread, the Angelus arc in S2 was, quite frankly, the best arc the show ever did. No other villain felt as dangerous as Angelus, I don't think any other villain took as much and left as great a mark on the Scoobies as Angelus did.

What I will say, he only worked that well as a villain once. Any other arcs/episodes involving the character just never carried the weight of that original arc.
