I don't think any other villain took as much and left as great a mark on the Scoobies as Angelus did.

Agreed. The reason he did leave such a mark (I think) is because of his previous history with them. Rather than being introduced to them as their enemy. It hits home because the majority of us have all been betrayed and had a friend turn into an enemy, it cuts much deeper.

The wench is back 😛 😛 😛

I agree though. Him being part of their group made the stakes so much higher for the gang. However, I do think that it being the first time the group felt loss also added to it. I mean, Dark!Willow didn't, in my opinion, have an ounce of the emotional resonance of the Angeuls arc. I think it is because Angelus took one of them out. It just all became so real for the Scoobies during that time. Slaying had been kind of fun, thrilling even, to them until that point. Sure Buffy had suffered for it, but not the rest of them. Nothing was the same after this. I honestly think most of the major issues that come between the Scoobies later in the series were planted in this arc.

Also, with Angel/Angelus, there was a sense of tragedy to it. Buffy's one true love suddenly becoming evil and trying to kill them all because of a curse beyond his control.

Willow going psycho because her girlfriend died didn't really have the same...panache 😉

Points for panache.

I voted Angelus but it was tough! I really love Glory too, but I love Angelus because it was great seeing another side of Angel because at the time I didn't really like him so it was fun to see him more... well evil. I can't really put my finger on why I like him as a villain but I just love the way he goes on about everything. And it just made the whole thing seem a lot more personal because we were already very involved with Angel and he went all evil on us! Same with Willow, but that makes me more sad than 'wahey what a villain!'

That truly was difficult. If I had to choose from the options above, it would have to be Angelus. For reasons stated by others, but he was just so ruthless and cruel. The height of his cruelty was how he set up Jenny's body in "Passion". As if killing her wasn't enough, he wanted Giles to experience the epitome of pain by setting his house up so that it seemed like Jenny had a special night planned. From the roses, to the champagne, right down to the music...it was just too much. The moment Giles discovered Jenny's body, I literally had to close my eyes and cover my ears with my hands. It was just too much to handle, and for that, Angelus will probably always win by a long shot.

But I picked Angelus only because I think you overlooked another Big Bad: themselves. As I have stated before, season 6 is my favorite season. The trials and tribulations they went through in season 6 hit closer to home than any other arc on the show for me, especially Buffy's arc. I don't know what it's like to come back from heaven, but I do know a thing or two about having your previously happy existence being ripped apart, and you're stuck in this existential "dead end", this zombie like state, where you would do anything "just to feel". As Dark Willow was only the result of Tara's death, the entire arc of season 6 dealt with the Scoobies being at their absolute worst. Life was the Big Bad, and I connected to that more than anything else.

Interesting take
Angelus was an truly epic villain.he was just so damn EVIL and so bad ass at being evil.season 2 is my fav season of buffy thanks to him.

Without contradicting my post in the Angelus/Angel thread, the Angelus arc in S2 was, quite frankly, the best arc the show ever did. No other villain felt as dangerous as Angelus, I don't think any other villain took as much and left as great a mark on the Scoobies as Angelus did.

What I will say, he only worked that well as a villain once. Any other arcs/episodes involving the character just never carried the weight of that original arc.

I agree wholeheartedly. I get the chills whenever I think about Passion. That episode never gets old. The only other villain that almost got a reaction even close to that out of me...may have been Caleb. But no one compares to Angelus imo. I loved The Mayor because there is something really scary about a villain who seems to be nice and charming, yet is deadly underneath the surface (Skip from AtS for example) but...I found The Mayor to be more comical than deadly haha.

Great points. Angelus is one of my favorite villains ever, and not just in Buffy. Totally agree about Caleb as well. I think Angelus is the better bad guy, but Caleb had one of the best opening episodes ever. If they were looking for a way to get him over fast as the new big bad in town, they found it.

As for Skip, I hated him going evil. "Inside Out" is the only episode in the entire Angel series that I truly despise. Seeing him go bad sucked, but you're right, he nailed the sinister factor.

sooo sinister, and I had a feeling that he might be evil but then I thought "nah" ugh that actor played him perfectly
Where's The First on the poll? It was more the overall Big bad than Caleb.

1 Angelus
2 The Mayor
3 The First
4 Adam
5 The Master
6 Caleb
7 Dark Willow
8 Glory

I think it's because The First was something that couldn't really be fought. It wasn't tangible. Personally, I got WAY more satisfaction when Buffy and Angel brought Caleb down than when The First was defeated. Caleb was a phenomenal big bad.
