Best Buffy episode to "hook" newbies?

i think the dark age would be a good episode to use to get someone hooked into the series

Eh, I think The Dark Age is a little boring, especially if you haven't really met the characters yet. But that's just me.
This is such a difficult question!! Very cool though, that you're having a showing to get people into it!! Kudos.

I'd say...maybe either School Hard, Restless, or The Gift. but...that's sooo hard!

Or Tabula Rasa? Grave is so good too, though...

Ahhh!

Lies My Parents Told Me..

make me STOP!!

tabula rasa is only really any good for people who know the real characters though otherwise you wont see the funny side as well, tis an awesome episode tho

I'd agree with Tabula Rasa. It's a pick up line to then be able to watch from the beginning and then appreciate Tabula Rasa again later, when watching it in chronological order. :)

I also agree with Tabula Rasa. It's light, funny, and shows how people who are familiar with each other, but don't know each other, act.
But in this case it would mean showing them only the first half of what was really a double episode...
Also, although you are of course right that the show deserves to be watched from the beginning, isn't it also true that it may work better to hook someone with a truly great episode first and then have them start from the beginning? I know I have no problem starting over every time I reach the end, and then season 1 is great just because I know what will come later.
I suppose you could do it that way...just seems like too much work to me. 🙂

I think its best to start as early on as you can but S1, as good as we think it is and IT IS, showing just one ep from it I don't think will really intrigue a casual first time viewer too much. I'd definately go with S2, and from that I think School Hard or Halloween are the best options, both really entertaining but not really requiring much knowledge of the show in order to enjoy them. Good luck with your screening! 🙂

Thanks guys for all the input! A few top contenders are starting to emerge. I think I will have to re-view a few selected episodes before I make this monumentally important decision...

My general theory in most cases is that the majority of people aren't worthy of this show anyway, and I respect the legacy of BTVS by keeping it to myself. 🙂

Of course the preferrable way to introduce someone to the show is to start from the beginning... But most people aren't going to be willing to watch an entire 7 seasons of a show unless they see something they REALLY like first, which is why I picked specific eps from each season. I picked those 'cause they are ones that you don't HAVE to be versed in the storylines to enjoy. 🙂

I would choose Hush. It's just an amazing episode, and too overly weird and "out there" like The Body and OMWF.

HOWEVER! Do not let them talk through it! I actually did let my friend talk to my other friend and nothing got accomplished... 🙁

I believe the show deserves to be watched in order from the very beginning. It's the only way that, to me, it can be truly appreciated. Warn them that if they're turned off by S1

I finally got one of my sisters to watch the whole thing. She´ll finish Buffy tomorrow and I´ll visit her as well (only happens twice a year or something). And I "forced" her to watch the whole thing from the beginning. But if she hadn´t have trusted my judgement she wouldn´t have watched the following 6 season. I´ll ask her if she has any suggestions.

Any updates?

And my sis sure wasn´t any help. 🙁

Only problem with showing someone Passions as an intro episode is it has major spoilers...not only does it have a major character death but it also lets people know Angel goes evil...

It's really hard to decide.. The stand-alone episodes that don't give anything away and can be understood (and felt!) without having experienced the past are seldom the best. On top of it all "School Hard" froze when I was trying to watch it, so I will have to buy a new season 2 before deciding. It will happen next year instead!
