Which era of tv is your personal favourite and why? Which shows are good examples of this era?

The 90's were the best period, I'd say. BtVS being the obvious, and there are a lot of classic movies from the 90's era. Plus Nickelodeon was better in the 90s. So I've heard.

I agree. The shows in the 90s aimed towards kids and teens were sophisticated and plot driven, and treated kids like they had intelligence. Nickelodeon had “Secret World of Alex Mack,” “The Journey of Allen Strange,” “The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo”. Even the cartoons were better, though geared toward younger kids. “Rocket Power,” “The Wild Thornberries,” “Hey Arnold,” even “Rugrats” were intelligent compared to the drop in quality that came out in the 00s and 10s. Disney had a very well written drama called “So Weird,” that was so plot influenced and paranormally spooky, that they retooled it when the change at Disney happened in 2000 and made it a lighter show—the quality severely changed with Disney’s change to lighter and goofier comedies. Comparing “The Famous Jett Jackson” and “The Jersey” to 00s shows like “Lizzie McGuire” and “That’s So Raven” shows the drop in quality. The latter were more popular, yes, but they were not as good in quality.

Even teen shows in the 90s were better. There’s no comparison between the WB of Dawson’s Creek, Felicity and Buffy faire vs the CW shows like Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries and 90210. They’re just so different.

And that’s just the younger shows. The shows in the 90s for adults were amazing compared to later shows too. Too many to list! Definitely 90s TV.

Absolutely agree.

Pretty much every show that started in the early 00’s or earlier went rotten in the mid-late 00’s onwards. The advent and integration of the internet into more and more programs certainly didn’t help either

I would say the shows that started in the late 90s to 2010 but that's probably because it's the era I grew up on with Buffy, Angel, Charmed, Doctor Who that was airing in the 2000s. I think it's just what informed my taste in shows because I like shows from that era even if I didn't watch them at the time, for example I feel nostalgic for the early seasons of Grey's Anatomy even though I only binged them all this year, but they're from the 2000s.

Yeah I was wondering if my preference for late 90's/00 was just because that was the coming of age time for me, or if it went beyond that. Cool to see people more than a decade younger appreciate it too 🙂

The 80's.

Which shows did you like best from then? I don't know that I have seen any 80's sci fi tv, we grew up on the young and the restless and a country practice 😀 how did the 80's out preform tv since? Better quality writing or casting?

I've seen some Dr Who and Star Trek, but that's probably as old as I have seen. What shows were you watching then? Was it the live format that appealed the most?

Add Remington Steele, The Fall Guy, The Greatest American Hero, Cagney & Lacey, Pee-wee's Playhouse... seriously, it just goes on and on.

Absolute favorite? 90's - 00's. I mean, I'm a little bias because that's my coming-of-age era, but TV, movies and music were the best IMO. We had BTVS, and 90210, among others, and some really good reality game shows like The Mole.

I do have a certain affinity for TV and movies from the 50's and 60's as well though. I have several DVD sets of TV shows from that era, like The Twilight Zone, Stark Trek TOS, Bewitched, etc.

If you were around in the 50's, you had choices like I Love Lucy, the first program to show a pregnant woman on TV (which scandalized some people) and one of the trend-setting comedies of all time. Disneyland was one of the shows and Disney changed it to "The Wonderful World of Color" and probably promoted the largest changeover to colour TV in the marketplace and the greatest conversion rate per capita to colour was in <<drum roll>> Odessa Texas.

Other 50's shows included Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger, Maverick, Paladin, Cheyenne, The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp and The Roy Rogers Show because westerns were in vogue at the time. Family shows like Leave It to Beaver, Father Knows Best, The Honeymooners, The Danny Thomas Show, Lassie, The Donna Reed Show (where Joss' grandfather was a writer), Our Miss Brooks and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet generally sucked but they were lapped up by eager viewers. The Twilight Zone was a major fantasy show but one show I remember was Experiments in Terror in the 60's, a show that had a person face an emergency and perform in a completely terrified way, a normally competent way and a masterful way. There was Uncle Chichimus, a children's puppet show that aired in Canada with a puppet named Hollyhock. There was one black show, The Amos and Andy Show.

Now we are called the boomers, but back then, we were called the television generation and all sorts of dire warnings and pulpit denouncements were given to us about how evil an influence it was, sort of like social media now.

Dude. Your entire list should be devalued as you left off Perry Mason, Dragnet, Have Gun Will Travel and motherloving Steve McQueen in Wanted: Dead or Alive, which is the show you should have lead with, because it's motherloving Steve McQueen. Screw all that Disney and Lucy crap.

Interesting to hear. I’ve seen some episodes of Star Trek and most episodes of The Fugitive. I got into Fugitive a few years ago and it quickly became my favourite tv series. Each episode is like a mini movie.
