I'm curious: what was the best fan fic idea you have ever encountered that you wish had been used in either Buffy or Angel?

Well I read mostly Bangel fan fics so my scope is skewed but the ones I’ve seen that I wish I would have seen on the show:
I love the massive crossover fics where all of Fang Gang and Scoobies come together to solve a problem. I know realistically that couldn’t have happened due to network issues but it would have been nice to see. I think the crossover fics that work well are S7 with the First or post NFA.
I really like the idea of Buffy coming over and facing Angelus in AtS season 4, there is one fic called Splitting Souls which I found intriguing and would have enjoyed seeing play out on the show (but re-worked..)
@Grace’s “Another Minute” is another fic I would have loved to see play out on screen, post IWRY. It feels easy to fit in with canon and ties things in great from the IWRY events to the Riley chapters.
I once read a fic where Angel finds out about the Buffy sexbot and beats the shit out of Spike. I would have loved to see that on the show 🙂

Damn, some of my drink went down the wrong pipe when I read that. So funny! And you know what, the best part is that I could totally see Angel doing that too. That could have made a great episode.

Harmony and Cordelia beating Ethan Rayne to death with a stiletto heel. I wrote that myself 😛 If I could see that on the TV screen, it would be the greatest thing ever.
BtVS is perfect, so I do not like the idea of "fixing" it. There are some things that get alluded to on the show, that I wish they had taken more time to explore. More early Will&Tara is the big one. More about Will's relationship with her parents.
There is a super sexy Will&Tara story called Never Let Me Fall. That should have been on the show, like oh my God!

Y'know, I think you hit the nail on the head on why I prefer ensemble pieces; because it comes the closest to something that might have happened in the show. I can occasionally enjoy a good Spuffy-isolated story, but I'd much rather read one where the Scoobies and/or Fang Gang play an almost equal role to the Spuffy.
To answer you question, I would say the epic series I read years ago, where Illyria travels back in time to early BtVS S7 and alters all of the canon events as we know them. It's a masterful piece of storytelling that introduces an array of armory and battle practice to the new Slayers, brings Illyria and Fred face to face and puts Wesley in the spotlight where he belongs 😉

I'm more invested in Xander when it comes to fanfic.
1) The theme of gender reversal is presented in many of Xander's storylines on the show, but was never dealt with in the same depth as fanfics. I would like to see Xander deal with being raped by a woman (that woman being a slayer (Faith) or even Buffy while under the spell in BB&B) and see how different it's taken when it's a guy.

2) Body switch between Xander (who wishes he was special) and Buffy (who wishes for a normal life.)

3) I read a lot of Spander fanfics and it upsets me how Xander and Spike have so much in common and yet the show never explored that. I love the idea of Xander's father finding Spike in the basement and kicking Xander out of the house, and both Xander and Spike find another place to live. (Xander doesn't have to end up being gay, but I would like to see him and Spike connecting and perhaps becoming friends.)

4) Girl Xander! Xander turned into a woman for an episode would have been amazing!

5) Jesse! Almost all fics, even not Xander centric fics, acknowledge that Jesse existed and that his death was traumatic for Xander. I would have loved to see Xander deal with telling Jesse's parents about what happened to him.

6) Xander dealing with losing his eye. Xander wasn't allowed to mourn his loss on screen because of the apocalypse. I would have loved to see how this injury would have affected his life.

7) Giles begrudgingly adopting Xander. What if Xander is physically abused by his drunken father (signs being more clear since S1) and social services get involved? A storyline with Xander and Giles living together reluctantly and slowly growing like one another (in a father/son way of course) would have been amazing to see. I can just imagine how Giles' influence would get Xander more interested in school.

I have read a fanfic once, where the Immortal whom Buffy is dating in Rome is Captain Jack Harkness from Torchwood. If we could have seen SMG an JB dancing in that Club together - that would have been nice. Such a pity, that Torchwood wasn`t on air yet in 2004.
