Best of the Best Part 3: Star Wars

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away.... best of the best came along and asked the age old question:

Which is the best Star Wars movie?

For the purposes of this thread, we're only talking live action movies released in the cinema, not games, TV series' or made-for-TV movies (so no Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, sorry Ewok fans!).

Your choices are (in order of release)

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)

I have a bad feeling about this.... (not really, I just always wanted to say that!) 😉

Its between Force Awakens and Empire for Me. Really impressed with the writing for Force Awakens and thought the new characters all added something, plus it didn't over do it with the effects. For now I will go with Empire as I've seen it more. I really like the twist at the end and it is darker than the other two original films, and with a proper b-movie director.

The first film is passible as entertainment, but still drags and takes itself too seriously. Jedi is rubbish IMO. The next three were pointless.

It actually might be the Force Awakens, not because of the story, but because of the characters. It seemed to only enrich the story behind the characters we knew, and brought in so many great new additions. Rey is one of my favourite new hero.

Second would be Revenge of the Sith (I know) and Empire Strikes Back.

I voted the second one. But seriously, "Fanboys" is better than the actual Star Wars series, all of them.

Spaceballs was pretty good! 🙂

But since that ain't here I'll be predictable and say Empire. It's the most grown up of all the movies and takes time to develop the inter-character relationships.

I also liked Force Awakens and Star Wars. Although I do like a lot of the action in RotJ- the opening in Jabba's HQ and the speeder race through the trees.
I dislike the prequels quite a bit.

I like all Star Wars movies more or less.

The new one was really good but it's somehow impossible to pick it as the best.
It miss that special feeling I get when I watch the original 3 movies.
Guess it's mostly nostalgia but it still are an important part of the overall enjoyment while watching for me.

Think I'll pick "The Empire Strikes Back" like most others it seems.
Not exactly sure why to be honest. But I think that they really hit their stride in this movie and there's no Ewoks. 😉

Revenge of the Sith. My mates don't appreciate me telling them it's the highlight of the series! I've seen most/all of the first 6 films and for the life of me I can't understand the hype. I remember enjoying episode 3 more than the others but I can't really think why, quicker pace and more action perhaps.

Think that is why TFA worked so well for me because it didn't take itself too seriously and made fun of the melodrama of the franchise leading up to that point. But like the recent Star Trek films it moved too. These films work best as adventures not self-important Shakesparaian dramas😉

I'm not sure! I like Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens equally. I don't love them, I'm not a Star Wars fan in that way, but they work as movies, whereas the weird prequels kinda pooped in their own bed.

Don't foeget that Lucas directed all three of the prequels too. That made a difference for sure.

Not in the good way. I think the problem is he sees dollar signs everywhere. His focus leading up to the release of The Phantom Menace was on 'beating' Titanic at the box office. He was so bummed that Titanic stole his glory. Maybe should have focused on hiring scriptwriters and not just farting out a first draft and calling it a movie. Even though I'm not a Star Wars fan, I still think it was a disservice to the people who fell in love with the old movies and their charm.

I have a problem with George Lucas as an artist. Brilliant businessman though. 😛

The empire strikes back is probably the best movie but my vote went to A new hope since it's effect on me is much bigger.

The prequels could have been so much better but they got their moments. If I'd grown up with them instead of the original trilogy I might very well prefer them.

I like the Ewoks! Yes, they are ridiculous, doesn't fit in the war/fight scenario, are meant for kids and shouldn't be able to defeat Stormtroopers they way they do but they're cute. So there. Make fun if you want.

The first movie I saw was Empire and that was when they released it in 1997. I was excited for the prequels and saw the first two in theatres. I watched an "anticheese" edit on YouTube which improves the prequels but they are still bad. I do like Revenge of the Sith though but even that has it's weak spots. I do know people that grew up with the prequels and think they are good movies and like them better than the originals. I really enjoy The Force Awakens and look forward to the next movies.

I can't believe The Phantom Menace has no votes! 😀

Whilst I think Empire is a better all-round movie, it has to be the original for me, because it was the first one I saw and the first one to get me hooked on the Star Wars universe.

It's a shame we can't include parodies; Spaceballs is brilliant, as is the Family Guy Trilogy (Blue Harvest is definitely the best of those)
