I am sorry but there is no way Black Panther should have gotten an nomination for Best Picture. They said part of the reason it was nominated was for its "cultural influence." Kevin Feige said of the picture "'Female empowerment is very important to Ryan [Coogler]. It’s important in front of — and behind — the camera on this movie,' he said. 'Our [first] assistant director, our director of photography, our production designer, and costume designer are all women, most women of color.'"

I didn't think cultural influence or your production staff normally played roles in determining Best Picture, has it?

I don't see an issue with the nomination. People have been complaining forever that popular movies get snubbed and superhero/fantasy genre movies haven't been given the recognition they deserve from the Academy etc. Maybe things are changing and more things are being considered?

But come on? That movie for best picture? It's just like last year when people were saying Wonder Woman should have been nominated. In my opinion there has only one comic book movie -in the modern era, dont recall what other movies came out when Superman did- worthy of best picture and that would be Dark Knight.

Doesn't explain Widows or Beale Street not getting nominated over Black Panther. Widows got a 91% RT and Beale Street got a 95%. Black Panther got a 97. Maybe that's all they are looking at.

I'm so done with the Oscars. It's all about politics now. I remember when the Academy chose films because they were good; not because they had a "diverse" cast.

Black Panther was definitely entertaining, but the acting was mediocre at best.

The Academy Awards have been a farce for a long time now. They have no clue what good means, and it's usually just friends doing friends favors at this point. It's too insular of a community, and as a consequence they lack any real objectivity in their opinions and evaluations. You need a committee with better judgment and taste and that stands much further removed from the community and process to give out awards. In my opinion anyway.

I don't think the Academy Awards are as much as the problem as it's the Motion Picture Association of America controlling them. These studios pay millions of dollars to be viewed as an upper echelon of movie making; I think it's they that influence the Academy Awards more than the voters poor judgment. Netflix is said to be joining the MPAA soon- does that explain Roma's nomination for Picture?

The Oscars have traditionally provided a handy list of films to avoid, mostly due to the sheer boredom they induce. After a wave of criticism they're now mixing it up by making sure they represent whatever was complained about not showing up last time around.

These are the ones I've seen this year. Black Panther is a solid 7 or 8 out 10 Marvel film. Ranks in the middle maybe upper middle of the pack. I liked it but it's quite clear why it's been nominated while the other million Marvel films haven't.

Blackkklansman was a good film.

Bohemian Rhapsody was great for the music and Queen fans in general. Great lead. Other than that it was pretty poor.

The Favourite is dreadful. Really dreadful. Two birds with one stone here. Has women in it, extremely boring. Perfect fit.

A Star is Born. Again good for music and Gaga fans. I thought the ending was well done. Pretty average and I didn't like the characters much.

Because the voters got confused and thought it was a Huey Newton biopic?

I haven’t seen all the movies yet ( but I definitely plan to) but I feel like it’s not a very good year for cinema in general...

I loved Bohemian Rhapsody so I’m happy it got nominated (and I will be happy enough if it wins) but I’m not sure it’s oscar worthy. Rami Malek definitely deserves the nomination as he is the best part of the movie, he’s incredible in the role and I’ve never seen anyone this good at lip synching.

A Star Is Born is kind of overrated as far as I’m concerned. It’s well made but it’s nothing we’ve never seen. Maybe I’m being unfair because I keep comparing it to the first 3 versions but it just feels uninspired at this point.

I wish A Quiet Place had been nominated. I think that out of all the movies I’ve seen this year, it’s my favorite.

It doesn't matter which movie gets nominated, the whole ceremony will just be another excuse to bash President Trump. Besides which, given the quality of last year's string of movies, there isn't much better to choose from anyway. At least "Black Panther" isn't a remake or a sequel.
