Best Season or Worst?

I've always considered Season Six one of my favorites. Even though Tara dies, which was awful, they had to give Willow a motivation to become evil, and Dark Willow is a very interesting villian, IMO.

I wouldn't call season six my most favourite season (that's reserved for season five!), but I thought it was quite strong and I enjoyed it. There are some amazing episodes (Tabula Rasa, and the musical episode) and some equally great moments (Dark Willow). One of the best moments from this season was Giles surprise entrance at the end of "Two to Go" ... I've always loved Giles!
I'm not crazy about the Trio, but I think it has more to do with Warren, who I found to be very unlikable. I don't mind Jonathan, and I think Andrew's awesome, especially going into the seventh season.

I loved Tabula Rasa too. I love how funny Buffy is and that was missing a lot in season 6, but I laughed a lot in that episode. I loved it when Spike realized he didn't want to bite Buffy even though he was a vampire and he gave the speech about being a vampire with a soul seeking redemption (Angel-speak) and Buffy said something like, "That sounds lame." LOL!

Worst season for me.
1. Buffy is so unhappy, confused, she just looks like Buffy but inside - she's not there.
2. That whole thing with Spike - big minus for me.
Don't like it. Not because it's all Spuffy, I can deal with that, it's just Buffy is really, really unhappy and for me that's bad, because 'til then I really could relate to her.

It's my second favourite season (I'm a big sucker for season 7, warts and all). Season six has it all - drama, sex, addiction, laughs, magic, reality, nerds, relationship issues, resentment, loss, kleptomania, growing up, money woes, crappy jobs, secrets and lies, and yet after going through all that (maybe because they had to go through all of that), by the end, we still manage to get good things like, growth and love and beauty and acceptance and forgiveness and peace and hope. I find it quite beautiful.

I can understand those who don't like the darkness of this season but it's along with season 5 my favourite season. But if the show had been this dark all the time it had never worked. One thing I noticed though. I've been rewatching the whole show the past few months and season 6 was the season I had the hardest time to get through. Could go days before getting to a new episode. But that's because I was in a bad place myself so I couldn't take more in even if it's just a tv-show. For some reason I liked the episodes with Dark Willow more than I usually do. Go figure.
And to be perfectly clear. Spuffy (sex) has nothing to do with why I love this season.

I really love Season Six. 🙂 It's actually been my favorite Season since I was about nine, I believe. What I really like about it is the character development. I like that all the characters really matured throughout the season, and IMO it was the most interesting and realistic Season of the bunch. So, yeah, I love Season Six. 😀

Season 5 was pretty dark, with Joyce dying and Buffy dying, but s6 took it down a much darker path. Buffy ripped out of Heaven, Tara murdered and Willow going all super dark.

I don't consider any seson the worst or the best but I do have episodes that I will skip over at times. And each season I have a favourite or two. In season six without a doubt my favourite is 'Normal Again'. To me this one actually quite spooky and makes really think is buffy really living in an alternate reality. It is well acted with twists and trurns of confusion.

S6 houses some of my favorite episodes and concepts -- it's my one of my favorite seasons, definitely. Buffybot, Andrew, Spuffy sex, "Gone" (with invisible Buffy!), "Once More with Feeling," etc etc.

I have mixed feelings about season 6 as I don't think it's overall a very good season yet it still accounts for a large amount of my favorite Buffy episodes (Tabula Rasha and Once More With Feeling to name a couple). While I believe that the darker tone allowed the writers to do a lot of bold and creative new things with the show that resulted in some truly excellent episodes, I also feel that this was the first season that I really had a hard time relating to the characters. Everything just got so dramatic and dark that the show lost a lot of the charm and wit of earlier seasons and replaced it with something entirely different such that it didn't feel like Buffy anymore; instead it was something very different.
I've always felt that seasons 1-5 of Buffy were basically an allegory for young people dealing with the pressures and changes of growing up into adults. I would even argue that season 7 completed the arc as by the end Buffy has matured into an adult and quite a leader. Season 6 on the other hand really went off the map in character development. Buffy is brought back from the dead to become a suicidally depressed, struggling single parent who is addicted to destructive behavior. Dawn suffers from a massive case of depression as well and finds solace in stealing. Willow basically becomes a heroin addict. Xander breaks the heart of the girl he loves. And to top it all off, Giles abandons Buffy at the worst possible time. To me, this is no longer an allegory for growing up. Sure, people make mistakes as they go but it's a pretty unbelievable for so much bad things to happen to everyone pretty non-stop for so long.
The writers really went off the deep end with these characters and I think they realized this as they quickly resolved just about all of these issues in season 7 so they could go back to the more light-hearted Buffy.

I know a lot of fans are split on whether they like this season or not.
Personally, I think its great. But its not without its problems...

Easily the most adventurous and different season, but sadly very little of it worked for me.
I think the damage it did to some of my favorite characters is why I didn't like it. I just don't think they recovered from it.
Anya for one. I always liked her character, but always put aside the whole fact that her back story is pretty messed up. She has her heart broken by one guy, so spends hundreds of years torturing and killing men, who had nothing to do with her heart-break, but they're bad men - so that's good enough. Yikes. Then when Xander does it, she jumps back into the demon fold. I hate that Xander broke her heart, but I just thought she was better than that, and well, was more human, but no - she wanted him dead. Season 7 tried to undo the damage, but i have to say I never liked her after season 6.
Willow was the same, season 6 truly wrecked her character for me, I hated Dark Willow, I hated the addiction metaphor and actually found a lot of Alyson Hannigan's acting fairly cringe-worthy. Again by the time season 7 came around I was pretty much done with Willow. Especially when she moved on so fast to Kennedy.
Other weak points of the season for me were the trio. Never liked them, didn't find them funny and damn, way too much time was dedicated to them.
The highlight of the season for me was Buffy. The sense of not belonging, and being lost in the world was one of the most successful metaphors they used this season. It was hard to watch, but it was worth watching to see our hero fall and come out better on the other side. A great performance by Gellar this season.

Those are the main things I like about the season. It's not my favorite, but I don't hate it. As for The Trio, I hated Warren, he got on my nerves so much. He was a creep, to me. lol Andrew was annoying at first, but I couldn't help but love him later on. I've always loved Jonathan, I wish he could've stayed on the show.
While I don't like the magic addiction thing, I think Dark Willow was cool and the season finale was really emotional, to me anyway. I always have a weak spot for Xander saving the day... or world in this case.

Best season. Xander saves the world. Giles's return feeling like the best damn thing ever. Tara looking more beautiful than ever. Buffy's normal again. Beautiful. Also Spike. And Randy Giles.

There just no other way to follow from season 5. Season 5 broke Buffy. Really. Ripped her heart out and ate it. Enjoying itself (obscure reference to "enjoying myself" from Dollhouse). Buffy was dragging herself to the end in season 5 because she had no other option. In that sort of crisis situation, you take whatever strength you have let and finish... you aren't really yourself, you're in this loud noise, somewhat outside of yourself. She reached the end... and... now she has to live her life again. You just can't jump back into life after that. She has to rebuild herself. She's very broken.
Which she does in season 6. Usually tv series deal with such issues with one episode and then everything is back to normal. For example TNG which had Picard going through hell in Best of Both Worlds and then the following episode Family solved all the scars. Or Enterprise where the entire season 3 is about breaking captain Archer as much as possible... and then space nazi's + pity sex from old girlfriend heals his soul and everything is back to normal. But season 6 was that one episode of healing and exploration of personal scars, before everything... got worse. It's something you watch on DVD in one sitting. There's very natural continuity from season 5 to season 6 to season 7. Somewhat. There's a sudden change from Buffy's Magical World of Wondrous Things of season 2-6 (season 1 feels like a completely different show) to Buffy the Prequel of Fray of season 7. Fray and 7th season deal with similar subjects and have similar themes. And share a similar apocalyptic atmosphere.
In a way, season 6-7 of Buffy also mirrors Dollhouse. Echo is broken, she rebuilds herself, then everything goes to hell and she has to become a leader. Buffy's broken. Buffy rebuilds herself. Then everything goes to hell and she has to become a leader.
