TURNING POINT, 1951

It was four o'clock in the morning. She'd just arrived home. She should have been in bed a long time ago. She was just a child.
I was just arriving home, too. But at least she had a choice. She smiled at me as she walked by. Then she hurried inside. She thought I didn't know what she was, but I knew. I'd known pretty much since they arrived, her and her "˜father'. But were not father and daughter. Was I the only one who saw that? They didn't even resemble each other.
But I guess they needed a cover. They couldn't exactly go shouting it from the rooftops.
Why couldn't she sense me? I asked myself that question so many times. But I didn't have an answer.
Maybe she could and she was waiting for the right moment.
Maybe she thought a vampire living in a hotel room couldn't be too dangerous.
Maybe that was her at the door now. No sane person would knock on someone else's door at this hour.
The bellman.
"Mr."¦um." He stammered. Did I really frighten them this much? "You weren't home earlier this evening. This is your weekly account." He shoved an envelop into my hands. "˜The Hyperion Hotel' was stamped on the front. "˜217' was underneath. The bellman turned and headed for the elevator at the end of the hall, not even waiting for a tip.
"The name's Angel." I shouted after him.
"Of course, Mr. Angel." He called back. I turned to go back inside my room.
"No." I said to myself. "Just Angel."
That Slayer was going to have to watch it in this city. That's what she was. The Vampire Slayer. The man was her Watcher. It was a tough world out there. Full of demons and vampires and that girl was going to have to face them alone. I should know what it's like. I was one of the worst vampires in history. And that's not a reputation you can get easily.
They called me Angelus, the one with the angelic face. But I was anything but angelic. I was the Scourge of Europe. For over a century, I hunted with my sire, Darla. I killed, I destroyed, and I did it all for fun. I killed to feed. I killed to make more of my kind. But mainly, I killed for fun. That was until I killed the wrong girl.
She was beautiful, with long black hair the color of midnight. She tasted like heaven. Too bad she was the favorite daughter of the Kalderash, a gipsy clan. The head of the clan cursed me. And he found the worst curse imaginable for a vampire. He restored my soul.
But you guys already knew all of that, right?
So I lived like this, for the past fifty years. Traveling across the U.S. I ended up in a L.A. few months before. I got some money and I ended up living in the hotel.
The Slayer moved in a few weeks later. I never paid much attention to them at first. I thought maybe she was a prostitute. Going out at night, coming home just before dawn. Then I saw her. Fighting, killing the vampires like it was a walk in the park. She didn't see me, but I could see her and I realized what she was. The Slayer. I felt so stupid! Calling her something she wasn't. I don't know how long she's been the Slayer, but she appears to be good. I mean, wasn't dead yet. God that sounded awful. I got into bed.

I was woken at nine pm. the next night. There was a fight. It was coming from next door.
The Slayer. They were being attacked. Should I help them? She might have recognized me. Or worse, the Watcher might. Someone's screaming. That was it, decision made. The door to their room was wide open.
Vampires. I should have guessed. Living in a hotel room, no invite needed. I walked straight over the threshold. Maybe fourteen vampires. Dust on the floor. She'd killed some.
How were they going to react when the guy next door started helping them? I didn't care, I couldn't stand back and watch them get killed.
A chair was lying broken in a corner. I grabbed one of the legs and staked the nearest vamp.
One of them recognized me.
"Ange-" he started. I staked him before he could finish.
The Slayer noticed me. She looked confused. I guess she had a right to. She stalled. A vampire came at her from behind. She was too slow. I threw my stake. Direct hit.
After a few minutes, only dust remained. All the vampires were gone. Except me, that is.
Both Slayer and Watcher were staring at me. I couldn't deal with it. I had to get out of here. I turned to leave.
"Wait," the Slayer called. She put her hand on my shoulder.
"I'm sorry. I should have stayed out of this." I said with out turning to face her.
Bad idea to keep your back to the Slayer.
She forced me to face her.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"A friend." I answered.
"You knew they were vampires. How?" the girl looked even more confused.
"Yes. Well, I've had some experience with some vampires. I've never met a Slayer, though." I told her.
She backed up a few steps. "You know I'm the Slayer?"
"Yes. I watched you, out hunting. I recognize the skills. I've read about you. Well, your predecessors." The Watcher looked wary and guilty all at once.
"My name is Bethany." She held out her hand. "And you are?"
If I told them my name is Angel would they make the connection to Angelus? They were looking at me strangely.
"My name's Angel." I took her hand.
"Funny name." Bethany giggled.
"John Edison." The Watcher offered his hand. I took it.
Obviously Bethany couldn't sense me. I didn't know if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
Good for me. Bad for her.
We had a brief talk, and then I excused myself and returned to my own room.

It was almost five in the morning. Again, Bethany arrived home the same time that I did. She said hello, as did I before I headed inside.
I had just poured myself a glass of blood when there was a knock on the door.
I put the blood in the cupboard and went to answer it.
Bethany stood in the hallway.
"Hi," she said to me.
"Hi," I said to her.
"Can I come in?" the Slayer asked.
"Sorry. Of course." I stepped aside to let her enter. She came inside and sat down on my bed. "I don't have much to drink. Would you like a glass of water?" I offered her.
"No, thank you." Bethany declined. "I just came by to ask you something."
"What?"
"Angel, how did you know they were vampires?"
The question took me by surprise. "I told you. I've had a little experience with vampires."
"Yes, I know. But how? When? What happened?" she asked.
"Um, it was a long time ago." What do I tell her? "A vampire killed my family. And my friends."
"God, Angel. I'm so sorry."
"Like I said. It was a long time ago," I told her. It was the truth. She just didn't know that I was the vampire that killed them. "I was on vacation at the time."
"I know how you feel. I don't have a family either." Bethany said. "I was taken by my Watcher when I was a child."
"When were you Chosen?"
"When I was sixteen." She answered. "I'm eighteen now."
We were both silent for a few minutes.
I broke that silence.
"You said you had something to ask me?"
"I kind of need some help." Bethany said. She winced. The Slayer was hurt. "I was fighting a demon earlier, when I was hunting. After the vampires. It, the demon, it was strong. Stronger than me, Angel. I only got away by tricking it. Otherwise, I'd be dead." She lifted up her sweater. She had a huge wound in her side, blood was pouring from it heavily. I went to the bathroom and got the First Aid kit and started cleaning the wound.
"Have you told your Watcher?" I asked her. I hadn't been this close to warm, human blood in over fifty years. It was hard to resist.
Bethany shook her head. "Not yet. I came here first. Thought maybe you could help me."
"I'll try." I told her.
"I want to try and find out what this demon is by myself." Bethany said.
"If you tell me what it looks like, I'll try and sketch it. Maybe then we can figure out what it is." I got out some paper and drawing pencils. I was really into the whole drawing thing. Still am, I guess.

"That's it! That's the demon I faced." Four hours later and we were finally done. I recognized the demon.
"It's a Hardacor demon." I explained. "It can only be killed by an enchanted sword. It's incredibly strongonly reason you survived was because you're the Slayer."
"So, any ideas on where I can get myself one of these enchanted swords?" she asked. "I need to kill this thing."
"I can get one." I told her. "I know a guy who specializes in mystical objects. It'll take me a while to get it. Meet me here at midnight. In the mean time, you need to get some rest."
"Oh, my gosh. Look at the time. You must be exhausted." She said sympathetically. "I'll see you at midnight.

sorry, meant to write, to be continued!!

TURNING POINT PT2: Bethany; 1949-1951

It was 12:30. And Bethany hadn't arrived yet. I was getting worried. What if she went out hunting first and ran into the demon?
I raced next door. Her Watcher was on the telephone.
"Where's Bethany?" I asked.
"She went out hunting around nine." Edison explained. "Is everything all right, Angel?"
"Bethany faced a Hardacor demon last night. She's in trouble. I got the sword and told Bethany to meet me next door at midnight. She didn't show." I told him.
"We must find her before the demon does." Edison grabbed his coat. I had the sword and we both headed out to find the Slayer together. Vampire and Watcher. If only he had known"¦

We did find her. About an hour later. Trouble was, the demon found her first. She was lying in Echo Park, surrounded in a pool of her own blood. Her neck had been broken.
It was my fault, and I told her Watcher what I was thinking.
"No, Angel. This is not your fault." He tried to reassure me. "You explained the dangers to Bethany and she still went looking for the demon."
"I don't think she went looking for it. I think it found her." I told him. "Now, I'm gonna kill it." With the sword, I headed out into the night, looking for the demon, which had killed the sweetest girl I had ever met. At the time, anyhow.

It was 4:48am by the time I got back to my hotel. The demon was dead. The sword did its job. I returned it to its supplier before going home.
I could hear John Edison on the phone to his stupid Council. He was telling them the Slayer was dead.
But they already knew. A new Slayer had already been Called. A fourteen-year-old girl in Spain named Maria.
It was like Bethany never even existed. She hadn't even been buried and already she was forgotten. She had done her job and she was forgotten. Just like every Slayer that came before her. And the ones to come after.
So is the way of the Council. And I guess it will always be like that.
Edison was right about one thing though. It wasn't my fault Bethany was killed.
It was his. His and his stupid Council.
Who was going to remember Bethany, now that she was dead? She didn't have any family, and the Council had probably already forgotten her name.
I'll remember her. I do remember her. I'd only known her for two days but she touched something in me that made me want to help her.
I'm not the real monster in this world. Vampires aren't the monsters. The real monsters are the Watchers.

As the memories faded away, Angel looked around the lobby of the Hyperion hotel. They had redecorated slightly since they had bought it and now it looked a little more like something of the twenty first century.
He looked around at his friends. Cordelia lay on one of the couches they had rescued from the basement. She had been dusting and cleaning all day, a foreign concept that was becoming a little more recognizable to Miss Chase. She had her hair tied up and wrapped in a red bandana. Wesley sat beside her on the couch and her feet rested in his lap.
Gunn was sitting on the counter that had once been the reception of the hotel. Angel leant against it, just to Gunn's right.
Angel realized what he had just said. He looked up at Wesley. "No offence, Wes. You know I wasn't talking about you."
"Don't apologize, Angel. I'm not a Watcher anymore. It doesn't bother me." Wesley said, smiling.
"Is that why you and Giles don't get along?" Cordy asked. "Because you thought he'd do the same thing to Buffy that Edison did to Bethany?"
Angel shrugged. "Yeah, that and, you know, I killed his girlfriend."
"Yeah, that's got to factor too." Cordelia smiled. "But Buffy and Giles are really close. He would never do that to Buffy. It would kill Giles if Buffy died. You know, again."
Angel shrugged again.
"Does Buffy know about Bethany?" Wesley asked. "Did you ever tell her?"
Angel shook his head. "No, I never told her. I don't want her knowing that I helped another Slayer and failed her."
"Angel, man, you didn't fail her." Gunn said. "You told her that it was dangerous to face the demon alone and she went anyway."
"Gunn's right," Cordy said. "You explained that the demon was strong and that she couldn't kill it on her own. If she didn't listen to you, that's her bad. It wasn't your fault."
"Ain't exactly the Watcher's fault, either." Gunn said. "The only thing you got against him is the fact that he didn't even take the time to mourn the girl."
"He had been with Bethany since she was three years old." Angel said. "She was eighteen when she died. If you lived and worked with someone for that long, wouldn't you cry if they died? You would at least sit alone for a while. I didn't even see him cry. I didn't even talk to him again. After he buried Bethany, he packed and went back to England. I never saw him again."
"Is Bethany buried in L.A.?" Cordelia asked.
Angel nodded. "Yeah, he buried her in Echo Park. In the spot where she died. I watched him."
"Again with the stalker thing." Cordelia exclaimed. "Angel, get a new shtick."
"You never saw him again? Like, ever?" Gunn asked.
"No, never. He probably died a long time ago."
"Yes, early nineties." Wesley said. "He, um, he was made a head Watcher. I attended his funeral. As did Giles."
"Head Watcher. Figures." Angel smirked.
"219." Cordelia said suddenly. Angel looked up at her. "That was her room, wasn't it? That's why you never go into it. You've been in ever other room in this hotel, except that one."
Angel nodded. "Yeah, that was her room. Brings back bad memories I guess."
Cordelia got up from the couch and walked over to the vampire. Gunn jumped down from the counter and took her seat beside Wes.
"Angel, look at me." Cordelia waited until Angel looked into her eyes. "It wasn't your fault that she died. She was a Slayer. A Slayer's duty is to protect the world, sure. But we also know that a Slayer's life isn't always a long and prosperous one. What would have happened if you had saved Bethany? If she had waited for you to come and help her kill the demon with that sword thing?"
"She would have been alive for a little longer. Maybe I could have helped her more than I did." Angel said.
"And what would you have done to the Slayer line?" Angel looked confused. Cordelia pressed on. "If you had saved Bethany, then she would have been the Slayer a little while longer, sure. But what would that have done? How many girls would have never been Called? That girl Spike killed in New York might never have become the Slayer. Okay, not necessarily a bad thing since Spike would never have gotten to kill her." Cordy shrugged. "But Buffy might never have been Called, too." Angle took that in. "Buffy was the Slayer you were supposed to help. Not Bethany. It's the way the Powers that Be work. I should know, right?"
"Cordelia is correct, Angel." Wesley said. "You were never meant to save Bethany. And somewhere deep inside, you know that is true."
"Damn straight." Gunn laughed. "If this Buffy chick was never the Slayer, then you might still be living on the streets or wherever and we'd all be out of a job. Well, actually, we would never have had a job in the first place, I guess."
They all laughed.
"And if Buffy was never the Slayer, I probably would never have met her. And I would never have met you, or Wes or Gunn." Cordelia said. "And I don't think I would like my life with out you guys in it." She looked at all three men. "You guys are my best friends. And, yeah, I'll always be close to the Sunnydale guys, but this is my home." She looked around the hotel. "And you are my family, Angel. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Angle smiled at her. Then pulled her close, into a long embrace. He had never held Cordy like this before, and it felt good.
As he pulled away, he looked up at the second floor.
"Excuse me guys. I think there's something I need to do." He pushed away from Cordy headed upstairs.
As he disappeared around the landing, Cordelia looked at Wes and Gunn.
Wes nodded and Cordy took off after Angel.

Angel stopped outside the door. The number was still printed onto the wood. 219. Although he didn't need to, Angel took a deep breath before he opened the door and walked in.
Cordelia and Wes had done a good job at cleaning it up. It was clean, and the bed was still in one piece, although it didn't have any bedclothes.
Angel crossed the room and sat down on the bed. His mind drifted back again to the fight in the room. The first time he had met Bethany. He laced his fingers together and looked down at his hands. He could still feel the anger he felt towards John Edison, and he knew that it probably would never go away.
He could sense her before he could see her.
Angel looked up and saw Cordelia was standing in the doorway. She smiled at him and he scooted over on the bed. She came in and sat down beside him.
He looked back down at his hands.
In one smooth motion, Cordy reched out with her right hand and took hold of his left. She locked their fingers together and held on tight.
A little confused, Angel looked up at her.
"I'm always here for you, Angel," She said.
Angel nodded and squeezed her hand, holding on tight.
All the fears and feelings he had been holding on to over Bethany dissipated with that one moment of tenderness. He knew he would never forget Bethany, but he also knew that he didn't have to feel guilty any more. He would never forget Bethany, the first Slayer he had ever met.

THE END

19 days and still no reply... shame on the regular visitors of this board.

It was a good story. It's nice to see how you incorporated it into the Angel-story. It was a new way of looking at Slayer, and an interesting one. So, thumbs up!

Ahhh Ally, you are right...I read this at least a week ago, and never commented...sorry Lyri, my bad.

Interesting way to tell the story, through Angel, it's a nice twist on the narrator's "voice". And you caught Cordelia's character quite well, I must say! A worthy addition to the "Tales..." Thanks for the story!

thanx for replying guys! i was worried, i thought non one liked it!!

Your worries are over! So, are you thinking of writing another piece for TotS?

yeah, i haver loads more already written and one that i'm thinking of submitting here, but i think someone requsted the dates i wanted, so i'll just wait and see.

i guess i could change them slightly, to work with the others on the board.
it set in the 1920's, so i guess i could use any year.

ok, i shouldbhave it soon!! i just have to register!

Good story...my excuse for not commenting earlier is that I was on holiday and I've had PC probs...I hadn't expected Angel to appear in TOTS but it was a nice surprise...well done Lyri

I just read this and it is really good. Bethany's death was so random and unexpected like most slayers. I liked how Angel mourned her death and went to kill the demon for her. And of course the Cangel moments are always a plus. Great job Aly.

this stroy has been up for over a year! i didn't think anyone was still reading it!! thanks for taking the time, Jesse!
I read this today.
Interesting concept.
I'll be honest, it wasn't the best thing i've read from you. It was a good one to read and compare to your most recent offerings. You have definitely worked on your story telling, while keeping your wonderful ability to imagine great stories.

I liked the idea of Angel telling the story, but I guess I felt it was a little 'jumpy'.

I got the impression you was not quite sure which narrative structure you wanted to follow.
I would love to read this if you wrote it now because, as I say, you have come so far in the writing sense I would expect this story to be brilliant.

Please don't be offended by my comment, I do like the story and its a great idea, I just think that this shows you how much you've grown as a writer.

Oh, my God, i wrote this, like, three years ago. this was actually the first thing i EVER posted here, even before i posted in the intro's thread. i can't believe anyone's still reading it! it should be buried somewhere, never again to see the light of day! lmao
i am in no way offend by your comments, Al, in fact, i think they were a little too nice, lol. this was my first, attempt at first person narritive and to be honest, i've kept pretty clear of it ever since. it's just not for me.

i really liked it. i liked the approach. It reminded me of the episode sort of. Anyway thought i should say you did an awesome job in writing it.

I know I'm like 2 years too late reading this, but, as your first fanfic, I really like it! I love the Cangel aspect and it was a tight story, i'll be reading more of your fanfic now! thanks Lyri!

I know that this was posted years ago but I've only just read it. I love how you've tied it into what we already knew from Angel being in the hotel. Also Angel not being all broody in the soul pre-Buffy years, and the gang not letting him brood after he told what happened.
