Better storylines for Giles and Xander

Giles and Xander have been neglected as characters in the last two seasons of Buffy. Can anyone imagine better storylines for these two characters to replace the ones or lack of ones they were stuck with?
 
Well I missed the black "Ripper side" of Giles! And I loved the "magic Giles" in season 6. Xander needed some more moments in which he is more "Helpfull". I think the writters could present him a little bit more in fight scenes. He has a really powerfull body and it would nice to see him fighting.
 
I always wished we had gotten to see more of the badass Giles that busted Willow's chops in "Two to Go". When we see Willow get knocked on her ass and then hear Giles say "I'd like to test that theory", it's one of the most awesome moments in the entire show. 🙂

Even though I love Anya, I was really hoping that in Season 7, Nancy from "Beneath You" was going to become a new love interest. I liked her, and I thought her interaction with Xander was adorable. Also, it would have been interesting to see Anya as the jealous ex while Xander moved on to a new, happy relationship with someone else.

Good question.

I always loved the idea of fully explaining Giles and his "Ripper" backstory. I know that the writers planned to have a "Ripper" spin-off so they were probably saving the stories, but in retrospect I think I would have preferred to have it explained in Buffy.

Xander is tough. Being the "heart" is basically a glorified cheerleader, IMO, I would have liked to have seen him become more of a leader, maybe become a technology expert and start to do something

Thank God that didn't happen. 😱 The show would suck without Xander.

I agree with everybody about exploring Giles' background. It's so rich with interesting storylines that it's a waste they didn't use it.

For Xander, a complex friendship with Spike. Xander will deal with his issues about vampires. Also, losing his eye early on and exploring that - perhaps have Willow grow a magical eye for him that he can't use properly and eventually ends up losing his eye permanently.

More thoughts about Xander: What if Anya hadn't stopped Spike from wishing something bad to happen to Xander and that bad thing happened? Xander would have to learn to live the last episodes of S6 and first episodes in S7 with whatever Spike had wished him until Anya reserve it in Selfless. The whole experience could have a big impact on Xander's character throughout S7.

Ooh, I like that idea. And it would be curious to see how the experience would impact things between Xander and Anya after Xander became one of her victims of torment.
 
While I agree that Xander should have been used more in the later seasons, I disagree that he was useless. Xander was the rock his friends needed. He was their link to humanity and the "adult" among the youngsters. He was the one to help fixing the Magic Box and Buffy's house for free or for a lesser price. He was the shoulder his friends would cry on. He was the one always taking the first step to adulthood: a job, his own apartment, getting engaged. In S7, he filled in the role of the gang's father. He was the one with the opposing view to Buffy's.

So, while his role was subtle and unflashy, it wasn't at all useless. And S5/S6/S7 would be a lot different without him.

I honestly just saw him as a glorified cheerleader. He did the dirty work no one else wanted to do...he was just "there", IMO. I respect your opinion and understand some of the points you're making but seasons 5-7 is where I lose interest with him. He's a normal character in a show full of super-powers, once his growth was done I got bored with him

I respect your feelings and opinion. Here's what I think: A normal character in a show filled with super powered characters should have made that character more interesting because the normal one is unique. However, the lack of focus on Xander, his unflashy storylines, and the way his character-development happened off screen made so many people miss his character development, which will take me to my second point, Xander's character growth wasn't done in S5. His character growth ended in S7 when Xander gave Dawn his speech.

The whole eye thing made him extra sexy, so I'm not complaining. 😉 You forgot leading slayers in Scotland and then his happily every after with Dawn in a pretty apartment in San Francisco. And he has a big secret now, so Xander's story isn't over yet.

I'm a happy Xander fan. 😀

Lol. Xander's finally doing something, story-wise, worthwhile, and all it took was loss of depth perception, several years, tons of people losing interest, a comic book run, and two series finales to get him there. Lol. It must be a great time to be a Xan Fan.
