Beyond Season 9

As things stand at the moment, the end of Season 9 may bring about the end of Buffy's saga, whether with an actual conclusion or another "You ain't seen nothing yet" grin on Buffy's face (My interpretation, it doesn't have to be yours) But what if the story were to continue, possibly without Whedon playing more than an executive director's role in the story line, or at best simply suggesting in rather general terms, in what direction he wants his characters and there stories to go, just how likely would you be to continue reading the comics? (This assumes, of course, that you are currently reading the comics on a regular basis)

I'll read the story as long as Joss wants to keep telling it. (I'm assuming if he's executive producing it's still his story, even if he doesn't write any issues).

For now I've grown weary of the comics, I don't feel I recognize the characters I loved and cared for anymore. I can't say the comics bother me much and I'll probably keep tabs on what's going on in s9, but for now I can't say I'm waiting to see what'll happen with the same interest as before.

To be honest...this may be a little shipper-y of me 😉, but as long as Spike and Buffy are in it in some capacity, I'll be reading the comics to watch out for them. Whether or not Joss is involved doesn't matter a whole lot to me. In fact, his stepping back from the comics might be a good thing, considering how Season 8 has been turning out.

Yeah, Buffy does seem to have slipped into a pot boiler stage of late, hasn't it? (Do they still use that phrase? It's what the old pulp writers used to do back in the 30's, just recycling the same plots, over and over again, like just adding more water to soup to make it go further) That's why I came up with the idea for this thread in the first place. If, as is beginning to seem to be the case, Joss has either lost interest in or run out of new ideas for, Buffy and her friends, or just has too many irons in the fire at the moment to devote sufficient time to it, maybe somebody with a bunch of new ideas might really be the best thing for the series. Not a "reboot," which seems to be in vogue for everything from James Bond to James Kirk these days, but just some fresh new ideas, maybe presented from a somewhat different point of view. That's not to say that he should relinquish all control entirely, the way that Greg Widen did with "Highlander," but a bunch of new ideas might be welcomed about now, just as long as the new ideas aren't so radical as to be totally out of character.

The mythology of the 'verse has grown convoluted, mainly because it isn't a metaphor for character development anymore, but mythology in itself - and crappy mythology at that. They're taking bits and pieces of the Buffyverse (Bangel, Amy, Oz's trip to Tibet), putting it together and stitching it up with some dei ex machina and retcons, culminating in the hot tranny mess that is season 8.

The only thing that the comics got somewhat right is the banter between the Scoobies and Dander (hey, it's grown on me!). But what's really awesome about season 8 is that

Much as I do now - I don't read regular comics on a regular basis. I read them, eventually, after everyone else has. The same holds true for Buffy Season 9. Eventually, I'll read them...but I'm not going to jump up and stand in line to keep reading.

Same for post-Season 9 if there's no Joss. So long as it's "canon," eventually I'll read it.
