What or who could be the big bad for season 9? Vampires, friends, cyborgs, gods, government, true demon, first evil and a new universe have all been done. The only thing I can think is to conclude the series with the Sanshu if that is still in play or possibly Buffy herself becoming evil. We've seen her friends change but never herself. What do you think?

Buffy going to the dark side would be an interesting tale. However, I think that Whedon should end the whole thing after Season 9. There is such a thing as allowing a story to continue a bit too long.

Evil Buffy would've been interesting if we didn't just finish a season of Buffy doing the self-betrayal dance. And even though she's going to have to deal with her part in everything that happened, please god let us not have a season of Depression Buffy AKA season 6. We've had Angel, we've had Angelus, we've had Twangel, please give the guy a freakin' break, he needs to do big, huge redemptive stuff next season. It needs to be a new, fresh Big Bad, something really imaginative that we've never seen. We haven't seen that in a long time (really since season 5). I have no idea what that's going to look like, if I did I'd be makin' the big bucks at Dark Horse. 😉

oo Buffy going to the darkside, mmhh interesting idea. That reminds me of something. I use to love the Buffy video game and I cain't remember which one but one of the Xbox ones one of the evil character's you have to face is Buffy in a alternate universe thingy. So maybe, I gotta say it would be a interesting evil and i would be into it 🙂
But of course i'd want good Buffy to win 🙂 🙂 🙂

No no no! Buffy should not be the big bad for season 9.

I want Willow to be the big bad. 😀

We've already seen Willow as a Big Bad and frankly.....

....she was lame as something-that-rhymes-with-duck.

Dark Willow was kickass! I love Dark Willow and wanted her to stay a bit longer...

OoOo Evil Buffy sounds good😀 I dont want Buffy to end after Season 9:C

I'm all for Buffy being the Big Bad, but I can't honestly see Joss vamping her. There's only two things he can do after that -

Kill her. Or re-ensoul her.

And if he gives her back her soul, there's the risk that she'll go down the 'I can't live my life as something I hate' and kill herself.

Which would end the series. Hmm, maybe it does have possibilities, lol.

If Buffy's the Big Bad, it might mean she taps into her Twilight powers, and we don't know if they're still there, or what's going to happen with the rest of the magic.

Personally, I would like to see something different. Not sure what, but we've done vamps, demons, gods, the origin of all evil, frankenstien, even best friends.

Maybe, with all the press Slayers and vampires are getting, we could have a better version of Buffy verses the government.

I'm not sure if we will have a Big Bad next season. I have a feeling that this will be much more of a character journey than anything else. I would expect to see more back to basics patrols and usual vamp dustings rather than a main evil focus.

The conflict that is needed to tell a story has already been created by S8. I would imagine that S9 will be how/if they survive and what becomes of them, individually and as a group.

Like Kean said, the gang dealing with the world the way it is now is a possibility, but also in there is Willow dealing with not having magic anymore. She could grow resentful and we could end up seeing another Dark!Willow story line after all.

It almost seems like Joss ran out of ideas for original big bads (at least for Buffy to face) at the end of season five. I think the only "fresh" thing there is left to do is, as Kean suggested, not focus on evil, but the characters. And honestly, the vaaast majority of the Scoobies have been neglected since season seven. It's time for some actual character development.

I thought the villain from S8 had not been defeated yet? The winged lion monster. Unless they take care of it in the last issue of S8, I'm guessing it will still have to do with it.

I always wanted to see a Vampire!Buffy, though. 😉

I'm all for no Big Bad, just character development. But we've never had a season like that, so I doubt it will happen. I wouldn't mind more government vs the slayers, but they've done that...twice! Although I think that conflict will continue as its unresolved. Just not as the Big Bad.

I really don't think that a Big Bad for what is supposed to be Buffy's final (again) season. Almost certainly, a large portion of the season will be centered around Angel and his search for some small degree of redemption for his part in everything that happened in Season 8. Beyond that, if this really IS going to be the final season, which I personally doubt) I think that it would be at the very least courteous to his fans, who have remained faithful for all these years, if Joss would give some closure, not just leave things hanging again, the way that he seems to love to do. I personally don't want to see Buffy ruin her life by ending up with Ol Broodie, but if that's the way that the story ends, then, by god, let's END IT ALREADY. Xander and Dawn, couldn't care less. He probably deserves her anyhow. Willow and Kennedy, I shudder to envision as being permanent. but, as long as I don't have to see it... Give Faith somebody to keep. No more one nighters. If that winds up being Spike, I can deal. Just don't leave the kid hanging out there all alone anymore. She deserves happiness as much as anyone, and maybe even more than some of the others.

Illyria, Gunn, Connor, and whoever else manages to survive the move from IDW to Dark Horse, let them all have happy endings, or if not actually happy, at least leave them hopeful.

I guess season 8 came as close as possible to "Buffy becomes evil" twist. I don't think Joss will dare to go further.

Season 8 was epic - maybe season 9 will be smaller, and the villains will be metaphors of coping with everyday life.

Personally I think the series tends to do better with a big bad known announced early in the season. My favorite seasons are 3 and 5 specifically because of the Mayor and Glory and the interactions between them and the Scoobies. Plus the Scoobies tend to come together at the end as everyone is needed for Buffy to be successful.

If the Buffy/Angel series are tied and this is the end then the Shanshu prophecy should be tied to some big bad(s). One would think it would have to be more powerful than any foe yet scene. With Glory, the Beast, Caleb, Circle of the Black Thorn, Adam and The Master among some of the toughest to fight, I don't see how there can't be a big bad unless Angel will continue after the Buffy series ends.

i hope the goverment plays a bigger role in season 9....after there's no magic in the world. the slayers will be hunted as the enemy of the states.....
and buffy fights for her own best😱
buffy becomes evil then😀
