Big brother on the BuffyBoards!!!

I'm the same as Xander, i picked the people i've had chance to get to know rather than not picked the ones i dislike. I think i made that point in my original post. To be truthful there is nobody here that i dislike enough to make a point of excluding. Well, maybe one ... kidding!!! 😉

I do get your point though, some might feel a little disheartened if they don't make any of the lists.

Well that's the thing, and I did mention it in my post: No one makes a list meaning "Hey I like these people and I hate the rest" but it might be interpreted that way. We're all buddies here, of course. I'm just saying that if you're new (or not so new maybe) and never get included in such things as picking favorite members, you might not feel that welcome. I know no one here is about excluding people, but some people are shy, even over the internet, and don't have that courage to "make themselves heard" or to just join in on the fun. Especially not if they feel excluded.

Although I kind of, almost agree with Doppleganger, I think there's shades of blame here that have to be considered.

The rule from the FAQs concerning Signatures, that was mentioned was one designed with a specific purpose. A board has to try to avoid getting too cliquey. What I mean is you hope to avoid a board becoming a place where only certain groups can feel comfortable posting, or a certain group, or groups might gain the kind of power where they can decide what, or who can or can't post or be posted. Every one should feel comfortable putting forward their little theories or whatever.

At the same time though a person wants to feel comfortable making friends, and expressing that connection.

It's like, suppose the board administrators decided to ban these kinds of threads as a matter of policy. First of all I would say it probably isn't necessary, because I don't think this is a particularly cliquey board, so I wouldn't see the necessity of another rule. I would find it overly authoritarian - a little goose-steppy. And how far do you want to take it? Do you want to ban comments in posts that suggest a connection between 2 or more members? Do you want a board where it's one homogenized, unfriendly mass?

Personally I view these kinds of threads as something just making it on this side of the scales in the balancing act between cliquey and homogenized. As such my impression is they're tolerated, more than endorsed.

My bad, I forgot to mention that it was a signature-rule. I was just cross referencing or whatever :)
You know I agree with you Fran. I love the idea with this thread, it's fun and cool and everything. And I really really believe you're not trying to make people feel left out or anything. But it can definitely hurt that no one wants you there, or that no one remembers to say that they want you there. I understand perfectly well what this thread is about and that it's all just for fun but it does bring those bad memories back to me as well (being picked last and stuff), so yea. I'm not like "against" this thread but unfortunately it doesn't really work as that fun/cool/friendly thread it's supposed to be...

I get what people are saying, but also looking at it from another point of view, when new members see threads like this it can be a chance to get involved and know other members. For example saying that they'd choose so and so because they seem nice, I know thats how I started speaking to Xander.

There is a line and its a thin one, but in all honesty I don't believe that this thread was intended to exclude people, because I don't feel that anyone here does that to others, as after all we were all new once.

No of course it wasn't, it's a fun and great idea for a thread and all. And I know no one here is trying to exclude anyone 'cause you're all such cool and nice people.
(But there's still a but, unfortunately.)

I'm just wondering have anyone of you seen Big Brother? Why oh why would anyone want to be a part of that?

I know what you mean with the excluding part, but this thread really is one of those I think you should be glad if you are excluded from. What are the poor newbies gonna think about the people that are included?! That the BBers are just a bunch of boozing mental patients....?

Oh second thought never mind my comment, go ahead with BB's BB 😛

Kd staggers through the door, clutching a mostly-empty bottle of Jack Daniels, and wearing the tatters of a straight-jacket.

Hey! Who are you calling a "boozing mental patient"? I find that an unfair repre...reper...rpere... repres...picture...

Oh dear, before we know it will have our own version of "Simple Life". Is that what BB's coming to?

Oh dear oh dear. Alas what a world we live in.

But we should so have that thing/show/whatever where you switch lives though! That'd be totally cool, I'd love to try anyone of you guy's lives for a week or something 😀

(Anyone wanna?)

I see where you are going with the whole "People might take it as a popularity contest"

at first I was discouraged that nobody picked me (and when she did, she called me a girl! LoL, J/k, NSM!) and I thought "Am I annoying? Maybe I really am girly! What is wrong with me!"

But I quickly remembered that I'm new, so nobody has gotten a chance to get to know me. So my panic was over as quickly as it started.

Your avatar is ace though, so you're much loved by at least me
I've seen some threads that have made me feel uncomfortable in the past, and I can understand.

If anyone ever feels left out, please speak up. It's no one's intention here to make you feel that way.

I simply picked people who I felt would make an interesting house whether I liked them or not. I mean no one really liked Omarosa, but they sure do want her on their reality shows 🙂

I don't think that people would feel excluded. The fact of the matter is, that we all 'recognize' the more prominent posters on the board, and we all interact that way. There were a lot of people who were not chosen who are major players on this board. I don't see it as a popularity contest. It's just merely a chance for people to express the good qualities about members that would make them interesting to hang out with.

Popularity contest or not; at least we got to discuss this a little. Now Newbies know that these threads are not to exclude anybody. And that's a good thing. Yay.

I still don't like these kind of theards but meh, no one's forcing me to read them 😛

I have to go with N4H on this one. Too many rules can stagnate a board. The more unnecessary rules you make the less confident people are with their post. Everyone here, I think, recognizes the problem with posting lots of heavily cliquey threads. And as far as losing noobs because they feel alienated. You'll probably lose just as many noobs with a post about spangel. And do we really want to ban that? Noobs will feel left out at first that's part of being new. We have hundreds of awesome active members on this board and all of them were new at one point so I dont see the system as not working.

P.S. That being said I'm mad as hell that I wasn't on anyone's list. *pouts*

P.P.S. Now I'll be on every list from now on(yay guilt).
