Big in Canada: Throwing Axes for Fun
lead_large.jpg

Canada’s ax-hurling renaissance started exactly the way you might expect: three guys at a lake house with some beer, sharp tools, and nothing to do. “One guy, out of boredom, pulled out a hatchet and started throwing it at a tree,” says Matt Wilson, the founder of the Backyard Axe Throwing League, orbatl. “We were blown away by how addictive it was.”

In the decade since, Wilson has built a chain of eight batl venues across Canada that combine the friendly competition of a bowling alley with the decor of a bomb shelter and the boosterism of a SoulCycle class. (“Our mission is to show people the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by our backyard roots,” the group’s website declares.) batl has drawn some 150,000 throwers and spawned more than 30 copycats from Nova Scotia to British Columbia; between them, the facilities have hosted bachelorette parties, speed-dating nights, a 92nd-birthday party, and outings for groups like the Deaf-Blind Adventurers. An hour trying to “stick” a camper ax into a bull’s-eye on a wooden plank runs 15 to 30 U.S. dollars.

Don't mess with Canadians!😱😀

Well what else are we suppose to do? Build igloos? Ride caribous? That stuff only busies us on Monday and Tuesday, ax throwing is our Wednesday activity.
I want to ride a caribous.🙁 Not enough caribous here.🙁

She left the label on her axe.
You have to so that they can scan the barcode and verify the ax is regulation. They used to bring in ringers where the handle was semi-hollow so that it was thrown with more velocity. By leaving the barcode on the ax it eliminates the 'homemade' variety. Many organizers were fleeced before they started the regulations.

It's hip to be square.

When in Canada, does the multiple of ax become axes? And should the ax be at the very top of things does it become the axis?

Canada is a lot like Game of Thrones, winter is always coming and we're all really good with axes and other hand held weaponry. I know, I am Canadian. (If you're Canadian read that last line like the beer commercial).

Oh my god Canada, can you stop being so awesome for like five seconds? Your House of Commons is dedicated to keep you zombie-free and now this!

Love it, I want to try it! 😀

Sorry, we just can't help it. I mean, look at our prime minister!

I don't have a couch, but I have a nice air mattress all saved up for you! Gotta share the living room with my pet moose though...
I suppose I should be happy that my middle kiddo doesn't read English too well yet. His current use of tools is marginally safer. When I came home this evening, the kiddo, the saw and the axe was gone. He and his friend came back when it got too dark for their three-felling.

Hope you have space on your couch, cause I'm moving in!

Can I share the couch with you? My breath is a bit raspy, but I lie very still.

Hope you're not allergic to beaver hair, it's all over my house!
I hope all Canadians who need practise at ax throwing are moving to the American border as their armed forces will need to be bolstered when Trump wins the Presidency.

My ancestors were united empire loyalists, they fought on the side of the British during the American revolution. About 30% of Canadians are descended from the loyalists. When they lost the war against the upstart colonialists they moved to Canada. I think a lot of Canadians will welcome and understand the next exodus if it comes are way. And as long as the new arrivals don't mind going along with gun control and free health care we've got a great thing going here.

I'm not even a Liberal but I"m a bit in love with JT.

But nothing shows him better than this clip from before he was elected

Who isn't in love with JT!? (I myself preferred Mulcair, but I do love JT).

For those who want a translation of the video, the interviewer is essentially asking for a demonstration on how to fake fall down the stair, to which Trudeau happily complies.

And here is Pierre Elliott Trudeau (Justin's dad) showing off his moves.

Cool just runs in the family!

Love mulcair. Remember childcare healthcare pharmacy mul care? No one rocks the slogans like a Canadian socialist.
