Biles?

I'm with The Chosen on this one. But then again there are Buffy/Dawn 'shippers out there, so I guess there are people out there who are into that kind of thing.

In their more adventurous moments, Dawn would gleefully take the title of "the Key to Buffy's Pants" to make Xander squirm into silence.

^Yesyesyes to everything everyone stated above.
I'm a fan of older men (ie, ALAN RICKMAN omnomnom) and I'm only 21, and I like a few ships like that too, BUT, Giles and Buffy's relationship is *so* clearly not even remotely romantic, and its beauty is in the father/daughter dynamic. I have never read a romantic 'fic of this pairing, and intend not to in the future!

And I don't know if it's worth adding to the list (also, if someone else mentioned it, just ignore me!), but in 'Tabula Rasa', when they lose their memories, Giles and Anya think they must be married, not Giles and Buffy.

*runs off to add that to my list* Perfect - thanks. (And yes, I really am maintaining, and adding to, a list on my hard drive.)

Another one: in Restless, Giles regards Buffy as his daughter, with he and a pregnant Olivia being the parents.

Here is the article I read in defense of the ship:

http://ship-manifesto.livejournal.com/10116.html

Although it's a valiant effort, it's kind of infuriating the way the author misconstrues practically everything -- in fact, reading things the opposite of what they mean to me. For example, this author thinks "I wish I could play the father" in Standing means he's NOT a father figure when, clearly, to me, it means that he IS. And the way the author takes completely the opposite from the Band Candy remark ("I'm not your parent but I am responsible for you") than what I take from it. She completely misreads the dialogue in Life Serial.

And BTW, re this: "and then berates himself (via Wesley) for being too immature to ask Buffy to dance during 'The Prom.'" Is that what you saw? I thought he was telling Wesley that Cordelia was too young for him. And in what possible world did he want to ask Buffy to dance?

So you can see I've given this a lot of thought. But I'm *really* relieved to see that the folks here, who are so very intelligent about the show, don't ship Buffy and Giles.

^I skimmed through that essay -- it vaguely creeped me out how she went to such lengths to rationalise the contention. Are you writing a reply, hence the collection of quotes/actions?

Also, the title of this thread is perfect to describe the reaction one gets to the thought of Buffy/Giles being together...*bile rises in throat* 😛

Haha, nice word play!
She posted that almost seven years ago, so I don't think I'll try to post directly to her. I'm keeping my list in case the debate presents itself anywhere else. I didn't know what to expect here, for example. Although I should have known, because, in all the months I've been here, nobody has ever mentioned Giles and Buffy in that way.

Oh, kk, fair enough. I didn't check the date it was posted, lol!
I don't frequent the fanfic sections of these boards much, but that ship seems to be a fairly niche one...I can't imagine the majority of Buffy fans relishing it!

I still don't think a Buffy and Giles ship is any more ridiculous than...the grand majority of shipping.

Really. It's not like "Bangel" and "Spuffy" make any more sense.

One of the most frustrating things to me about being involved in online fandom communities is the people that insist on pushing romantic/sexual relationships that clearly do not exist. I find it frustrating when TV shows, or fans, feel the need to push relationships into something that simply doesn't need to be there.

Buffy/Giles do not have a sexual relationship, it doesn't fit with the story, and it is completely unrealistic. I have the same problem with the Glee fandom and the annoying people that ship Rachel and Quinn.

Maybe it's because I have a strong, respectful relationship with my dad, but daddy kink fanfic makes me want to vomit all over myself and then scrub my eyes with a metal scourer. GROSS, GROSS, GROSS. I have no problem with a large age difference - age is only a number afterall, and I have no problem with some student/teacher kink (believe me 😉), but when it crosses that line over to father figure (which we are told again and again and AGAIN that Giles is to Buffy), it's simply sick and twisted. NO.

/end rant.

I mean, I guess you can fight for any ship you want but I thought the series made it so very clear that Giles loved Buffy like a daughter. And Buffy loved Giles like a father, and even made the point in "Something Blue" that if she were to get married, she would want Giles to walk her down the aisle.

good point, and that's another good one for the list.
I just saw the Season 6 Finale. Giles is such a great father figure to both Buffy and Anya. To throw sex into the mix is sooooo gross!! (Tabula Rosa was funny, not gross, so Ganya didn't creep me out)

It's weird how Buffy and a 200+ year old is ok, but Buffy and a 45 year old is gross.

I actually don't see Anya and Giles as father/daughter at all. More like family friends, so I think that's one of the reasons that I didn't mind them hooking up. There was definitely something 'old married couple' about the two of them togther I thought, so it was clever to put them together as a jokey thing, but I wouldn't have liked them permanently together.

Once again, I don't have an issue with age differences. I've hooked up with someone older than my father, but he wasn't a father figure to me at all, but there are people in my life that aren't that much older than me that I could never hook up with because they are like family to me.

Giles just seemed like Buffys dad to me, even if he had been 30 and looked closer to Spike and Angels age it still would have made me want to vomit.

And for some reason, the Giles/Anya pairing does not gross me out. How old is Emma compared to the rest of the cast?

They're canon; Giles/Buffy is not.

As others have said, I hate it when people in a fandom try to put a romantic/sexual relationship where it clearly doesn't exist. This is why I generally hate slash shipping (you will never see me support slash unless it involves Spike... and even then, I won't support EVERY slash ship that involves Spike). Buffy and Giles loved each other so much. But as a father/daughter sort of way. And that is stated (actually flat out STATED) several times in canon. To me shipping this ship is like shipping a father and his daughter. Incest is not hot.

wait, off topic, but what does "slash" mean?

slash is a homosexual pairing, usually where one or both of the characters are presumed to be heterosexual in canon

Yes. It's one thing to have some sort of fantasy fic (there is a lot of non-canon slash fic out there- & I'm not suggesting that I think the incest fic is ok) but it's another thing to attempt to contend that there is evidence of this in the show. Then again I was debating with another member here about evidence (or lack thereof) of Willow's romantic/sexual feelings toward Buffy in season 8. I think it's one thing to see the possible sexual undertones of the Spangel relationship and another to claim to see it in Buffy/Giles.
It's weird how Buffy and a 200+ year old is ok, but Buffy and a 45 year old is gross.
Both Angel & Spike are old vampires, but they weren't that much older than Buffy when they were turned. Nobody seems to have a problem with the Xander/Anya age difference.

I ship Spangel because something very clearly did exist, it was canon that they had been together and I believe that they could very easily have been together if it wasn't for Angel being so conservative in his sexual views.

I also somewhat ship Spander because we were given sexual innuendos. Xander was at least somewhat sexually attracted to Spike and at least somewhat confused by his feelings towards him. Spike has also said joking comments about Xander being a 'nummy treat'.

Agreed, it spooks me.

I ship Spangel for the reasons you mentioned.

Spander for the reasons you mentioned.

And Spandrew because Andrew so obviously wanted Spike. He was obviously attracted to Spike and I thought it was cute.

All three of my slash ships have routes in canon. Other than those three, I've never shipped a slash ship...

They're canon; Giles/Buffy is not.

Right, but shippers never realize that these relationships were written as NOT being healthy ones. Yet they support them for some strange reason that, at best, has no effect on the actual story and, at worst, writing fanfiction completely missing the point of the source material.

My favorite character (out of Buffy's three love interests) is Riley, but I don't "ship" Buffy/Riley. The difficulties of their relationship were part of what made them intriguing, Riley in particular.

So you can "support" Buffy/Angel or Buffy/Spike, whatever that even MEANS, but doing so completely diminishes the story told by these relationships. It's misconstruing the source material and puts one's viewing/reading comprehension into severe questioning.

Buffy/Giles is not any different from this.

Huh?? so because someone likes the story of a relationship that happened in canon, their viewing/reading comprehension should be brought into severe questioning? Then tell me, how are we "supposed" to watch? Are we supposed to not care?

My support of Spuffy doesn't diminish the story told by the relationship. I love the story told by the relationship.. that is what I support. I'm diminishing the story by supporting it?

I'm just really confused by what you mean here... and a tad be offended with your wording about putting my reading comprehension into severe questioning because I'm a shipper.
