Maybe this has been discussed before and I just can't find it, but has there ever been either a reason or theory put forth as to why Buffy is scarred by being bitten by various vampires (3 that we know of, and some believe that Spike might have bitten her at some point as well during their Season 6 affair) but Faith showed no marks from being bitten by Angel?

The only thing that I can come up with is that the initial scar was there after she was bitten by the Master, so possibly his bite is simply more powerful than the others.

Good question!!

Good theory. But thematically, the scar is a nice touch.
I've been hesitant to answer because what I could think of is pretty much 180° opposed to my opinion in one of the oldest ongoing questions about the show... 😉

But here it goes...

Theory: Vampire bites do not scar "the active Slayer" (i.e., Kendra & Faith), but do scar Buffy who is the "surplus"/not "real" Slayer.

There. I said it. Really, it's a shame that all you people who don't believe in multiple Slayer lines (including the unseen third Slayer past The Gift 😛 ) couldn't think of it. 😛 😛

That's kinda splitting hairs, since Buffy retained all of her powers ,including accelerated healing, and she never showed any scars from any subsequent injuries.

I'll gladly give you that, yep. But then again, the entire "only Slayer line through Faith" thing has always seemed hair-splittish to me, anyway... even though I know it's a pet theory of Joss Himself, it never convinced me. 😉

I agreed that The Master was the one who caused the scar. But my reasonable thought is just, The Master's mouth is more curvy than other vamps(a.k.a. fruit punch mouth). That's why he can bite deeper.

I always thought that it would make a great story if there had been a "lost Slayer" somewhere, who suddenly had these fantastic powers and had a bunch of horror movie monsters chasing her all over the place. She's never heard of Slayers or Watchers, never met a "rogue demon fighter," and she's just dropped blind into the whole demon/vampire thing, no explanation, no guidance.

That's a pretty good description of Dana. Not perfect, but pretty good.

That would make an even better story premise than my theory! I've always thought the CoW just kept her secret from the Sunnydale gang during S6 and what little of S7 the Council still lived through. 🙂

I believe the scar is obvious in Buffy's neck cause it was by the Master himself...and he was a pretty strong bad ass vampire...like a thousand years old?can't remember!that was in season 1
She then again gets bitten by Angel(i really wanna see that episode!) in season 3...and by Dracula if i'm not mistaken? well i guess all three were very strong vampires and maybe this affected even the Slayer who possesses accelerated healing...maybe vampire bites are not like common wounds a Slayer experiences

I think that the scar was from Angel biting her in Graduation Day #2. The fact that she had a bite scar was mentioned in S4 *Harsh light of Day*, S5 *Buffy v Dracula*, & S6 *Afterlife*. It was never mentioned in S2 or S3. It could be part of her connection to Angel, similiar to the fact that they could share dreams and she could sense him when he was human.

^ awww it doesn't let me karma you again!!! I really love your "bangel bite scar" idea!!!

Indeed the scar from the Master has never been visible but the Angel's scar not only can be seen but it is also mentioned quite often! I loved it when Dracula wanted to bite her and he discovered she was already bitten. And that Buffy still remembered the vampire's embrace!!! awww!:giggle:

crazysoulless you are right about her connection with Angel. I think they both understood that what happened in Grad Day pt2 had a serious meaning. She sacrificed her blood for him, risking her own life in dangerous times just to save his life. It was very risky cause he acted on instinct. She had to force him of course.

I always thought it was from Angel. The Master bit her, yeah, but it was only for a second. Angel bit her for a helluva lot longer than that, lol.
And if I'm not mistaken, there was no mention/sight of a scar after The Master bit her. When we see Buffy's scar, it's heavily implied it's from Angel.

I actually think that The Master took a decent amount of blood from her, he just probably knows how to drink efficiently since he was over 1000 years old. I think that Angel drank A LOT more though since she needed a transfusion afterwards.

It is interesting that Buffy ENJOYS the vampire embrace. She liked having her blood drunk. But there has to be a connection. It can't just be from any vampire. It is like sex. She doesn't believe in one-night stands. The Master metaphorically raped her. She didn't want to be bit by him so she couldn't enjoy the experience.

yeah Angel drank a lot and if we take under consideration the tension and love between them, well maybe it was like sex I guess
To be honest, I'm not in a fanwanking mood, so I'll just say "continuity error". That's why one scar stayed, and one didn't. Or maybe Angel wasn't as nice to Buffy as he was to Faith. Maybe he simly did some extra tearing because he was ill and out of control? Of course, now I have to fanwank why she doesn't heal anyway, considering how much she usually heals.

That's assuming that it was Angel's bite that scared, not The Master's. I can't even remember if they bit on the same side. I assume the writers meant it to be Angel's since that would make more sense in the Buffy/Parker scene, reminding Buffy of her old more violent relationship when she's about to start a new one.

Dammit, now the fanwanking-obssession has started again. I need to run away now.

All three times her scar was mentioned, Angel references were not far behind. Parker said he hated guys who acted all "I'm broody, give me love" which made Buffy and the audience think of Angel and Parker is the first guy she sleeps with since Angel. Dracula saw her scar and said that the guy was "unworthy" and he let her go but that she could still feel his embrace and yearns for it and Riley thinks part of Buffy being drawn to Dracula is transference because of Angel. Willow compares Buffy's reaction to being brought back to Angel's S3 reaction.

Well I have never seen any scar on Buffy's neck from The Master or Dracula. The only scar that Buffy ever had was from Angel. I have always thought that it was there because of the bond they share and possibly because she wanted Angel to feed from her and because Angel marked her. Considering what the First said in Amends that Angel would drink her, I almost think that in itself made the bite "more" than the usual run of the mill bite.

Since the scar was highlighted again in issue 34 I would love to have a canon reason for it being there.

Angel marked her? Like a dog?

Angel marked her...it means it's a mark of their love IMO, she willingly gave her blood to save his life, she risked everything...

That mark is a symbol IMO. As it is very well said by Kean and crazysoulless it is of great importance because it is from Angel.

Yeah the Master and Angel have bitten her right shoulder, wasn't it? So at first I thought that the mark was so visible because first it was a scar by the Master himself and then by Angel who kind of highlighted the bitemarks. But now, I see after I read your posts that the only scar is there because of Angel and no other.

The Master just bit her for seconds and no scar is visible in s2. Angel bit her for many secs...was it minutes? And there was so much tension between them, Buffy wanted to be bitten because it was needed , not because she really wanted it IMO. Which slayer wants to be bitten by a vampire? She did it to save his life. Of course in Buffy's case it's different because she loves Angel and she can't physically be with him , so maybe that's a sexual interaction?
And yeah I don't think Angel was very careful because he acted on instict. She actually forced him to act on instict. He needed blood but he was able to resist...for her sake. This scene has a great meaning for me. It's not just sexual tension. It's sacrifice, love and embrace.

And I don't think Buffy likes having her blood drunk by vampires. With the Master she looked terribly scared. With Dracula she was hypnotised. Only with Angel it was according to her will. It wasn't his bite that she was missing, it was him. His love.

I won't open the riley subject. She didn't have the same communication with him as she did with Angel, he couldn't understand what that bite meant.
