Blood being "The Key"

I was just watching Becoming, part 2 and noticed when Whisteler said that Angel's blood was the key. His blood would open the door to hell, and his blood would close it.

This immediately made me think about Dawn. Her blood opened the portals between dimensions, and only her blood could stop it.

Do you think that blood in general is just a 'key' or is there some other connection? A connection between Dawn and Angel that was never explored? How many other characters have blood that could be key?

I don't think there is a blood connection between Dawn and Angel, i think what Spike says in The Gift(above) pretty much answers why its the Blood.

and Sk8r, Tara's blood itself had NOTHING to do with Willow turning evil.....that one is a stretch to use.
 
I don't think there is a connection between Angel and Dawns 'Key Blood', Angelus was destined to be the one to wake up Acathla, by putting his own blood on the sword, but his blood had nothing to do with actually opening a portal. While Dawns blood literally opens the walls between the worlds. They are to very different things.
And the Tara's blood thing is a very far stretch, her blood had nothing to do with Willow going Evil, she was already in full evil mode when she made the blood form a map. And the Slayers blood opening the seal, is a little different as it could be anyone's blood who opens the seal, all blood acts as a key for that thing.
But yeah Spike does explain why blood is always the key, because of its importance. And there is kind of another one, in Bargaining Willow has to have the blood of a fawn to open a passageway between our world and the after world Buffy was in.
 
I'm seeing a trend between blood, and it's connection to opening something or being important. All the ideas that everyone has brought up about the importance of blood, including Spike's quote and the Seal of Danzalthar is showing me more of the connection between blood and what it can do.
 
i think the Spike-line that DDLM posted is pretty much spot on...blood is life...when the blood stops flowing, life ends, therefore, most of the rituals in Joss' 'verse involve blood being the key.
 
Yes. I think it does sum it up very nicely. "It's always got to be blood". That is why it is used as a 'key' or an ingredient in most of the things on the show. And, in real life if you think about it.
 
I thought I posted this before, but I guess I didn't. So.

I don't think it has to do with the owner of the blood - aka, I don't think the blood between Angel and Dawn have any ties - but I think that a lot of the rituals in the Buffyverse invlove blood because in the Buffyverse, blood is someone's essence - it's the core of who they are. Dawn was energy at the core, and Angel...well, I think in the case of Angel, he started the ritual, so he had to finish it. It doesn't matter the blood type, I guess - it just matters that who started it finished it.

So, it's blood is all about the core of a person. Blood houses a person's essence - that doesn't nessecarily mean their soul, because their soul is a moral compass, not the core of the person. Blood is the single most strong influence in a person. That's why it's so powerful.

I hope I made some sense, at least. I am quite tired and I'm trying to have a discussion. So, if I'm nonsensical, correct me. Later.
