Bloody Hell???

Spikes favorite saying is bloody hell. I was wondering what does it mean?
 
Yes, it's a common expression in british slang used to express anger, shock or surprise 😉

Such as: "Bloody hell! Will I ever finish this stupid paper!?"

LOL This thread should get interesting. 😀 I always just took it to be a slang phrase curse word for the Brits. 😉
 
Yeah.... I love "bloody hell". I wish people didn't look at me like I was some crazy crackhead when I said it. 😛

I think I'll start using it. People haven't been looking at me as a crazy crackhead near enough lately.
It can be used when someones shocked eg. Giles in Yoko factor when he drunkenly overhears Willow saying Tara's her girlfriend.
Or in anger, you might yell it if you bang your head or something.
Or if your talking about a hell thats bloody.

I'm only from across the pond but I'm always disapponted when English people don't say it. I think it's a kind of regional thing as I have heard it more in upper class areas. It suits Giles🙂

But Giles wasn't shocked then, he was annoyed at Xander for not having noticed that Tara is Willow's girlfriend. At least, that's how I always thought it was. He sounded annoyed to me anyway. I really love that whole scene btw. Drunk Giles is too cute.

Funny thing is, I've never noticed it being that common when I was in England. Is it a regional thing?
 
Noooo. Giles was suprised. Giles, like Xander, had no idea Willow and Tara were girlfriends. The tone Giles said Bloody hell implied he was shocked 🙂 seriously

Most of it's been covered but it has a few ways of being expressed like:

surprise - 'bloody hell, I didn't see that coming' or
anger - 'what the bloody hell do you think you're doing' or even
Funny - 'I watched this bloke fall down a hole and I thought bloody hell that's going to hurt'

As for regional its mainly something we Southerners use (London) but not exclusive. Other parts of the country have their own variations on it...

And now I'll go away again....*leaves room quietly closing the door*
 
You can always use Google or the Urban Dictionary.
That's what I do 😀

It's a British term used to express anger, shock or suprise.
It apparently translates into American as "Dirty Hell."
It deals with Christ's blood, which was deemed sacreligious and so was shortened to bloody.
Hell was added later to express the full extent of the emotion.

Everyone's pretty much described it in any way I would have. It's not really a bad 'curse', not to me anyway...like BS said, Ron's says it, so I can too 😛

And just to chirp in I don't think Giles use of it in The Yoko Factor was surprise. I think it was more annoyance too. The tone inferred annoyance. If he was surprised I think he would have sounded more like Ron Weasley! 😀
