I just thought I'd write a little note about recent board downtime.

Our current host (who I otherwise love) only allows us a certain number of connections to the database at once, and when we go over that number, the site goes down. It is to protect the other people on our server's sites from crashing as well, so I understand the reasoning, but it's bad for us.

I am looking into getting a new host. The only other thing I've been told might help is to remove the shoutbox. So I am also looking into alternative chats.

Thank you all for your patience while we try and figure out the best thing to do for the board.

B 🙂

just do what you think is best...we'll still be here.

Losing the shoutbox would be a shame, but if you can find an alternative that would be great. Still, I'd rather have the boards up than the box. Like what Lyri said, do what you think is best. It's all very much appreciated.

The box can be fun but it´s not worth the site going down. I´m sure you´ll make the right call.
It's a chat program (internet relay chat I think it stands for) that let's you chat like in the shoutbox on what they call a channel. You can use a program (like Ice Chat or mIRC) to view the chat or sometime it can be loaded directly from a browser window. So for example we might have a channel on an IRC server called [HASHTAG]#Buffy[/HASHTAG] that you would connect to and be able to chat with other members. And maybe someone else on the same server has a channel called [HASHTAG]#XFiles[/HASHTAG] for X-Files fans or whatnot.

It would be like having the shoutbox in it's own window, but it would alleviate pressure on our server because it would be housed on someone else's.

We used it before on the board years ago, and it worked really well. I liked it much better than I like the shoutbox for some reason lol.
