Bones: David Boreanaz and the Buffy/Angel actor connection

One aspect of the FOX series "BONES" I find particularly interesting is the casting of guest actors, if for no other reason that so many of them have appeared on "Buffy", "ANGEL", or both.

Whether it is purely coincidence, or a direct involvement in the casting from co-star/co-producer David Boreanaz is unknown, but when you see this list, it is indeed impressive and hard to believe that it is coincidence alone.

I've tried to make the list as complete as possible, but I haven't put any BONES episodes the actors have appeared in, simply because it was easier to identify who these actors played on Buffy and Angel instead for recognition/familiarity.

Aside (of course) from co-star TJ Thyne, who appeared in ANGEL season 5 as a lawyer, the following are guest actors from BONES who appeared on either or both series:

Michael Mantell, who played hollywood agent Oliver Simon in both 'City Of' and 'Eternity', in season 1 of ANGEL.

Bonita Friedericy, who played Patience in the ANGEL season 4 episode 'Peace Out'.

K.D. Aubert, who was the second actress to play Nicki Wood - the second Vampire Slayer (and Robin Wood's mother) in season 7 of Buffy, killed by Spike (and was the original owner of his trademark leather coat).

Edward Edwards, who was one of Angelus' victims in the Buffy episode 'Amends'.

Leonard Roberts, who was part of 'The Initiative' in Buffy season 4 - Forest, although he and Angel never met in either crossover episode.

Jim Ortlieb, who was in the ANGEL season 3 episode 'Lullaby', playing a Wolfram & Hart suck-up.

Harry Groener, everybody's favorite evil Mayor of Sunnydale in season 3 of Buffy.

W&H liason Hamilton, or the man they call Jayne, Adam Baldwin.

Jasmine and Zoe herself, Gina Torres.

David Denman, better known as the ANGEL character Skip from seasons 3 and 4.

Clayton Rohner, who was in the ANGEL season 4 episode 'The House Always Wins'. He played DeMarco, the casino owner responsible for Lorne's abduction.

Rod Rowland, who was Angel's first W&H client in 'Conviction', Corbin Fries.

Tom McCleister, better known as Lorne's umm...mother.

Mark Harelik, who was in the ANGEL season 3 episode 'Waiting In The Wings'.

Kate Norby, who was part of Angel's past in the ANGEL season 3 premiere, 'Hearthrob'. She played the vampire Elizabeth.

Gregory Scott Cummins, who was one of the leftover vampire lackeys following the Anointed One in season 2 of Buffy, specifically 'School Hard'.

Danny Woodburn, better known as Mickey on "Seinfeld", was in the ANGEL season 4 episode 'The Magic Bullet', as the finger-eating demon who briefly befriends an on-the-run Fred.

Kali Rocha, better known as vengeance demon Halfrek.

Brent Jennings, who played vampire Absolom in the Buffy season 2 premiere 'When She Was Bad'.

Kristopher Polaha, who was Billy's cousin in the ANGEL season 3 episode, well, 'Billy'.

Mik Scriba, who was a parole officer who tried to kill Lindsey before Angel stepped in and offered to eat him in ANGEL season 2's 'Dead End'.

Colby French, who was the leader of the men trying to capture the Oden Tal women in the ANGEL season 1 episode "She".

Michael Cudlitz, currently kicking ass on the awesome show "Southland" was a zombie ball player / convict in the Buffy season 3 episode "The Zeppo".

Beth Grant, the original and dead owner of Cordelia's apartment in ANGEL season 1's "RM W/A Vu".

Azura Skye, who was a girl colliding with destiny named Cassie in season 7 of Buffy.

Patrick Fischler, conspiracy nut from the ANGEL season 4 episode 'The Magic Bullet'.

Channon Roe, freshly dead student Jack O'Toole from the Buffy season 3 episode 'The Zeppo'.

Ryan Alvarez, forever known as the "Pee Pee" demon in season 5 of ANGEL.

Joel David Moore, co-star in the biggest movie of all time "AVATAR", was a recurring character on BONES and made one appearance as a

vampire in the ANGEL season 4 episode 'Salvage'.

Bianca Lawson, otherwise knowns as Kendra The Vampire Slayer.

Edwin Hodge, who was in the ANGEL season 2 episode 'First Impressions' as a guy getting yelled at by Gunn for skipping out on his duty and going to a house party instead.

Randy Oglesby, who played the professor who sent Fred to Pylea in the ANGEL season 4 episode 'Supersymmetry'.

Andy Umberger, known as D'Hoffryn the vengeance demon leader on Buffy, and fall-apart stalker in the ANGEL season 1 episode 'I Fall to Pieces'.

Tracy Middendorf, Angel's first client Tina, whom he couldn't save in the ANGEL pilot episode 'City Of'.

Clea DuVall, the invisible girl Marcy in the Buffy season 1 episode 'Out of Mind, Out of Sight'.

From the season 6 premiere:
Melissa Marsala, who played Judy in 1952 from the ANGEL season 2 episode "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been".

From the episode 2 of season 6:
Justina Machado, who played the pregnant woman whose unborn child needed protection in the ANGEL season 2 premiere "Judgement".

As you can see, the list is ever-growing, even now with these latest two additions.
 
Lord that's an impressive list! (& impressive of you, to assemble it 🙂)

I'm just now getting into Bones, so I haven't watched all the previous seasons. But I look forward to seeing all those actors. I have insane little fangirl moments when I recognize former Buffy/Angel actors on other shows LOL.
 
Something else about "Bones" that is similar to "Buffy" is that David once more co-stars with a real kick ass woman whose name is the title of the show who has her own gang of helpers and who basically ignores most of the advice/orders that he gives her, and makes her own decisions about everything.

I've noticed those people too, and I always wonder if DB has any say in who is chosen, or if he doesn't know if they every go "Hey I made an appearance of Buffy/Angel, do you remember me"! haha

I've also noticed lots of differences between Booth and Angel...the biggest is that both feel remorse for all the people they have killed, and it's brought up often.

Actually, and seriously, I've heard it discussed by the producers that their relationship in "Bones" will always remain ambiguous, due to the history of all of the similar shows in the past that have failed very soon after the relationship was finally consummated. The "will they or won't they" suspense seems to keep the viewers coming back. Once the deed is done, they get bored with the show.

True...Joss called it the Sam and Diane effect...that's why Angel lost his soul, so viewers wouldn't loose interest!

Brennan somewhat like Buffy at times doesn't like to be touched either. She decks this criminal she and Booth were chasing after Booth tells him she (Brennan)doesn't like to be touched.

DB/Booth also sings in a karoke bar, dances, and in the first season has cheekbones much like he did in the first season of Buffy.

LMAO! Besides this very clever surface comparison I don't find Bones to be much anything at all like Buffy or Booth like Angel. Wait I take that back, one of the reasons I adore Bones so much is that, much like Buffy (and Veronica Mars after it) it does a brilliant job of balancing the MotW plot lines with overall arcs and character development. I have to admit though to having a much more severe crush on David as Bones than I ever did on Angel (Although Angelus perhaps was physically hotter 😉 )

And that is an impressive list of cross guest actors... I'm not convinced though that its anymore than coincidence and the fact that these are working character actors that make their rounds guesting on TV. And I say that cause given that these actors had, for the most part, bit 1 episode parts on Angel, its highly unlikely that David Boreanaz personally remembered each and every one in order to go to bat for them for a role on his show.
 
lol. I have watched three shows because DB are in them and he is charismatic. Even if the hotness factor fluctuates his charismatic factor never does for me at least. I see Angel in a lot of Booth's expressions.

Which characters did both of those actors play?

Did anybody notice that the victim in this last episode was named Liam?

Is DB doing most of the producing nowadays? I'm seeing his name up there a lot, along with ED and Kathy Reichs. I just started reading her very first novel with the Temperance Brennan character.
 
Wow! I had no idea there were some many Buffy/Angel people that appeared on Bones! Are there Buffy writers on Bones at all? I believe Smallville has some old Buffy writers???
 
There are no Buffy/Angel writers on Bones, no.

Both David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel have been producers for the past couple of seasons or so. Producers aren't as high up the food chain as executive producers are, though even in some cases those can be nothing more than vanity titles. They clearly have an influence on their characters' progression, and with producer titles their opinions on that are made more official in that sense.
 
The reasons that more and more main characters on shows are getting 'Producer' slots in the last few years is for royalty money. Boreanez and Deschanel likely put it in their contracts that they'd be listed as Producers going forward so they could get a portion of the royalties for syndication that gets split up amongst the producers.

For the record, I find it likely that Boreanez probably got a few of those people involved like Adam Baldwin, but the majority of the general characters is just a combination of Whedon having a good eye for talent and these people later getting jobs elsewhere, and the ever expanding universe of television that is requiring more and more actors to play various minor roles.

Robin Ryker was Amy's mom in Buffy and the "cougar" that Booth and Brennan walked in on, and Kavan Reece was the guy that was hitting on Temperance!!
