If Bones comes back next season, it will probably be the last for the veteran drama.

Fox Entertainment chief Kevin Reilly addressed his longest-running drama's fate during Monday's Television Critics Association winter press tour and was optimistic about it earning a tenth season order in the coming months.

"We're negotiating on Bones for season 10, and I expect it will be back," said Reilly.
After his Q&A on stage, Reilly spoke with a gaggle of reporters and said that it was "likely" Bones will end with a tenth season.

Bones has been one of Fox's most dependable series over the last decade. Frequently moving time slots, the show has retained its audience and provided stability in the network's roster of current dramas.

The show moved again in late 2013, with Fox shifting it to Friday nights at 8 p.m.. It has performed expectedly softer on the small night, but is still averaging a solid 2.4 rating among adults 18-49 and 8.6 million viewers -- season-to-date.

Fox is also still very much invested in series creator Hart Hanson. Just last week his Rainn Wilson vehicle Backstrom earned a series order at the network.

Bones, which stars David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel, is also executive produced by Stephen Nathan. Should a tenth season be for a full order, it will put Bones over 200 episodes.

I'm glad, the show is okay, but way way past it's prime, it hasn't so much gotten bad as boring. I'd rather see David in something else.

Nothing surprising about that. The show had a really good run, but it's time for everyone to move on; you could tell they've been wrapping characters up for the last couple seasons.

Yeah, this show has gotten really monotonous and dull in recent years: it definitely needs to end sooner rather than later. That being said, I hope they bring Zach back for an episode or two.

While channel-surfing recently, I rewatched part of an early episode and it reminded me how much better the series was early on. So while I still watch it & enjoy it, yeah I'd rather DB move on something else. I've always felt that his role as Angel was a more emotionally complex and deeper character. Seely Booth is fairly one-note. And I'm not overly-enamored with Temperance Brennan's character (unlike the books' character).

All the chemistry in this show is in test tubes.

I don't recall another show that has lasted this long where the lead actress has such an annoying voice. It was interesting in the beginning, but we are a long way from the beginning. The best thing about this show is the secondary characters - they at least seem to have some personality. Seely Booth is a very one-sided character - DB needs a better starring vehicle.

I loved Bones for a long time, but each season the quality has dropped. The past season I have found completely unwatchable. I'll definitely have to watch the last episode though! And it would be fantastic if they bought back Zach. It's disappointing that he isn't talked about or mentioned more.

I'm totally in agreeance with what most people have said--I watched Bones for 6 seasons, and then found that it lost its funniness and focus on crime. The character of Booth isn't as dynamic as I would've hoped. I would have loved to see flashback episodes for each of the characters to build them up, that would have been so cool! But season 10 better end with a bang (and some Zach, cause I really liked him). That's all I gotta say.

I agree with everything that has been said so far. I also think that DB is actually a talented and subtle actor - he needs a vehicle to show this. He is getting to the age when younger actors will replace him in the "heart-throb" role, and needs to show his ability as an actor.

I have always been hooked on Bones, but agree that it lost its way some time ago. The stories and characters that used to keep the show truckin' have become stagnant. I do agree that it has been better.
