There's something I've always been curious about, but I never got around to asking.

You Buffy/Angel fans from other countries; France, Poland, Denmark, Argentina, wherever. How is it, your English is so good?

Do you watch the episodes in your mother tongue? Are they ever broadcast in English, or do you get them from ...uh... other sources?

Oh and one more thing. If you do ever watch the episodes in a language other than English, how weird is that? What are the voice-overs like? Are there any that are really bad, like Spike talking with an effiminate lisp, or something like that? Does Spike have a Cockney accent, and Fred speak like a Texican, in say Polish or Danish?

Well,my english isn't good,so that part should be answered by Ally or Ann lol😛

In Argentina,S1-5(BTVS)&S1-2(ATS) were translated to spanish, the voices sucked soooo much!...
Now,all the eps are in english[[the re-runs(S1-5,S1-2) in english too(thank God!)]]
I think I wasn't too clear lol😛:
I've watched S1-5/S1-2 in spanish and all the seasons of both shows in english
I only got 'Destiny' from,..other sources

It's TOO weird...seriously
Angel's voices in spanish were terrible!,...every week a different(and worse) voice.
They didn't fit at all....and,god!,you should have listened Mandy in spanish,,I had nightmares becuase of that!lol😛...and ppl think David is a bad singer....
Spike's voice didn't fit either,...he sounded so freaking old!,nothing like James...

Well, the conclusion is 'Never Ever Watch BTVS or ATS In Spanish!'😛

I'm from the Netherlands. Hmm... I believe I speak english rather good, but my writing sucks now and then.

All the shows we watch here are subtitled. So almost everything is in english. Also when i read a book it's usualy in english, don't like the dutch books. English is sort of like a second language here.

In Denmark the shows are subtitled and the voices are on english,so when i saw Btvs and AtS on a german channel it was really wierd but pretty well done, even though you can't hear the accent.

I've spent alot of time in Holland recently and in the past and I noticed myself that everything is subtitled!! I don't think I could imagine a dutch subtitled Btvs/Angel! ::huh1::

I've seen s1,2 of both Buffy and Angel in Polish and also a few eps of s5 of Buffy in german-let me tell you this ...It was scary..Nw I watch it them all from other sources. I wouldn't call my English a good one...Just look at Allycat or Magui..I alsways feel stupid when talking with them🙂

Find us a clip! I wanna see/hear!

I know in France they're dubbed, as someone posted clips from the French OMWF.

I wondered that myself! I deal with people regularly whose first language is English and they're not as good with it as, say, someone like Allycat or Ana8 (among others). Where did you guys pick up the language? And do you have any troubles with it, and with the slang we use sometimes?

I think that many non-English speaking countries teach English in a way that should make us English speakers feel ashamed. It never ceases to amaze me that the standard of English posted here is so good from people to whom it is their second language (and if someone who has learned to speak English properly would care to correct the grammar in that last sentence I'd be grateful 🙂)

Keep it up guys.

As for most of us Anglophones talking to you in languages other than French, German and Spanish (if you're lucky😉) - don't hold your breath 🙂 In my experience most Brits just shout at non-English speakers, as if talking loudly at someone will make them understand you😉

I know what you mean about the teachers, Mr. P! But I had a teacher in 8th grade that ground grammar into us unmercifully, and I really didn't like him much for that...however, I am grateful now, since it would seem that my grammar is somewhat better than the norm (I think)...the only problem with that is that it makes me sound kinda stuffy and arrogant sometimes, especially in print...well, I am kinda stuffy, but I don't try to be intentionally arrogant with anyone unless they deserve it...

I love this thread !!! ::dance::

Erm... personaly my english isn't really good. I got problems sometimes while speaking on msn with friends, lol, it can be funny but also upsetting at time. & my speaking is worst, lol
The thing is that I think english is a great language ! Most of time you need less words to express your idea clearer than in french. I love puns & stuff like that in your language & I love listening to english stuff, anything, even the news on TV make me happy.
Also, I've really learnt a lot in english for a year, since I actually began to come into chat & stuff. Just 'talking' online with ppl made me progress a lot.

They are broadcast in here. Well, 10 months or so after it was broadcast in US. Long time to wait. & yep, they are dubbed. They indeed dubbed as well OMWF as AshSan said & well, it wasn't that a bad work actually, but I think they shouldn't have done that.
For S7, since I knew it was the last one & since I just had the internet, I decided to download all the episodes in english.
Doing that I was able to see all the episode only one month after it was finished there in US.
It asked kinda a huge work coz since I didn't understood everything & since they were no subtitles or anything in the epi I downloaded, I had to check the script & to check all the words I didn't know (that's how I got to learn so much vocabulary :: wacko2 )

The voices in french suck kinda. The only good one is Dawn's voice coz they make her whin & cry less, & that's good for the ears. They don't have accents. No accents, british, polish, texan & so on ... nothing.
Oh, there is a funny thing in the dub thing, lol, they don't always translate it exactly. Like remember in S7 when Anyanka talk with her demon friend while two lovers sing playing guitar? They talk about turning a man into a french, & in french, they translated it into an italian. Lol, I guess they did that not to offend french ppl, but I'm glad to know what was the real version & I don't mind Joss making fun of french ppl, even tho it's actually not true. lol

Oh gosh, soz, when I like a thread I tend to write too much.
*hides now coz prolly done tons of mistake in the language* :: hiding:

Hey Frenchy,
Nothing for you to apologise for...
Like I said before - you guys always impress me with your command of English. It's much better than I could achieve in French.

it's really funny ya now? when i was little i used to only watch english and german tv shows, movies etc. and i learned the language perfectly before we even had the classes in school ^^"

Im Swedish... I can talk english really well but grammar is what I suck at.. ::blush::

I hear BtVS in english and we have swedish subtitles. I heard Charmed once in french and I have two words - no no ::nono:: I didnt understand a word. talk to fast 😉

Everyone who has read a fan fiction by me knows that my english grammar suck :: tu ::

I think it's mostly coz at least in Poland we are taught 'proper🙂' British English...But as you can see I pick up the slang etc. quite fast🙂

Is that the way it's done then; a basic schooling in English, and then you pick up the rest from English-speaking media, or are some of you exposed to English in the home or environment?

Schools suck,..(Well,maybe just here...,I live in the worst country ever lol).Teachers suck too, they pretend to know everything about english and they don't know anything,I speak better than them and that's a lot to say cuz,well,me,..15 and blond 😛lol

AshSan: I'll try 😀😀....*starts searching😀*

I've got 5 English lessons a week at school, which really sucx and I hate it..But I also have 6 hours of English at my private course. That's the place where I actually learn sth new insted of redoing my old course book..

I've got six hours too(Private Course),but they are pretty boring...I don't like english classes,I like learing english,..but,by myself,I don't like teachers

Thanky very much Mr Pointy 😛

Yep, last year I had a bad teacher. Like I asked her what meant "peachy with side of keen" (from btvs S7 epi 1 lol) & she couldn't answer me, lol

This year, I got 3 english prof (grammar, literature & journalism), for 7 hours a week & it's mostly interesting. The bad part, we are too many & we can't talk a lot.
Next year I'll major in english & I'll have 10 hours !!! yay !!!

nerd4hire : i donno for others but we can learn lots of slang online as well, he hehe 😉
