Book recommendations

Not a series (yet), but I strongly recommend The Traitor Baru Cormorant, it's by far the best fantasy book I've read.
 
Not a series for this guy either, but tales of his exploits have raised many hundreds of books, tv shows and films. He was first written of on the east coast of the country you live in.
His name is, of course, Dracula!
 
Lord of the Rings.

A Game of Thrones.

Pretty much anything by Terry Pratchett (especially the Discworld series).

I liked Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind but after the second in the series felt it got worse. Your mileage may vary though.

A lot of people like the Wheel of Time series but I haven't read it myself.

It would depend on what you mean by "amazing characters" though.
 
The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.

Set in a western setting at first, which was previously an industrial revolution age before things just stopped working and something apocalyptic happened where it just sat there and corroded. Then goes between time periods of our real world for various reasons. Different main characters of different races and cultures, of different time periods of our own world.
There's a movie being made about the series. Only thing to know is that the first book is a bit dry. But picks up big time.
 
Tryed dark tower book 1 found it a hard read I may try it again.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations at the moment I've just started misery because I've had it while and I want to watch the film.
 
Oh God, the Dune series by Frank Herbert is absolutely BRILLIANT. I can read them over and over again...such ideas, such purity of thought! My favourite books EVER. The words will always reside in my spirit.

(You might also like his Destination: Void trilogy)

I always found the second book to be a bit heavy going, bit of a 'filler', but if you can get past that, I agree....great read!

Ah, yes. Dune Messiah was a bit...scattered. And far too short! It amounted to 1/3 of a proper book, in my opinion.

I'm still annoyed that Herbert's son, Brian, cashed in on continued the series after his father's death...because he has NO talent, whatsoever. I have not, nor shall I ever, give him credit for anything in the Dune universe.

I only acknowledge the first six books, which Frank wrote. 🙂

Just started reading Cloud Atlas and im enjoying is to much. Each chapter has different characters, a different era of time from the 1800s to the future, and a completely different writing style. Definitely recommend 🙂
 
Not sure if it's the kind of fantasy you're looking for, but for character development definitely Harry Potter.
