Books I should read?

I read Nancy Holder (She wrote a couple of Buffy books.), J.K Rowling (Did you know she doesn't actually have a middle name!), Trudi Cananvan.(She wrote The Black Magician Trilogy which I love!). Try them out and see what you think.

As an addition to Tranquillity's suggestion of Twilight, I want to throw in The Host by Stephenie Meyer. It's a book with a sci-fi "idea" about it, but not really a huge sci-fi theme. It's good.

If you're looking for classics I'd suggest anything by George Orwell (particularly 1984 and Animal Farm), Margaret Atwood, Kurt Vonnegut, Raymond Carver, or Ray Bradbury.
Fantasy/Sci-fi - David Eddings' Belgariad series, Philip Pullman's His Dark materials trilogy, and Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game and subsequent books (dunno what the series as a whole is called).
Nice, quick reads would be aforementioned Animal Farm, Lois Lowry's The Giver, and Ayn Rand's Anthem.
Others - Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried is a great work of metafiction, C. S. Lewis's Till We Have Faces is a wonderful retelling of the myth of Cupid and Psyche, and Barbara Kingsolver's Poisonwood Bible is a fantastic work of historical fiction (it follows a Christian family and is set up in a way similar to the bible, but in itself is not religious).

I've got a long list of books I'd like to read myself, so when I do, I'll recommend them if they're good.

I've recently gotten in to JD Robb's "in Death" series. They're so fun, and there's a BUNCH of them, so you'll be reading for a while. They're kind of "thriller-y" and set in the future, so a little "sci-fi-ish" too. In the meantime, I'm saving this whole thread so I can run to the library soon!

I'm an electic reader. I like Anne Rice, I like Stephen King, and I like a lot of the Buffy/Angel books (by various writers). There's also a writer - Mary Janice Davidson - who has written a series of "undead" books, such as Undead & Unwed, Dead and Loving It, Undead & Uneasey, Dead Over Heels, & Undead and Unemployed... very different vampire books, pretty comical, too... which I enjoy a lot because hey! - funny, is so, ummm... funny.

I'm also a huge Buffett fan (as in Jimmy) and his books are quite good also. But my all time fav writer is Pat Conroy. If you love the english language, read him. Specifically The Prince of Tides (the movie SUCKED! but the book is AWESOME), The Lords of Discipline (movie was OK, book was GREAT), and The Great Santini (movie was pretty good, book was excellent). Also The Water is Wide and The Boo. All very good, very engrossing books.

enders game is the best sci-fi book i have ever read (and ive read a bunch). the series for ender is called, surprisingly, the enders series (4 books total). there are, however, 4 parallel novels that follow enders friend "bean." those 4 books are called the "shadow novels" because they all have the word "shadow" in them.

out of the 8 books, i only recommend "enders game" and "enders shadow." its recommended for every sci-fi nerd. its like initiation or something.

i just read and liked Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture...Also Zimbardo's The Lucifer Effect is good so far too, I haven't finished it yet. Neither book is fiction tho..but both are good.

in the fiction realm I recommend Speak by Anderson and Looking for Alaska by Green...Looking for Alaska is one of my all time favorites

I suggest instead of trying to read books that others have given you here, you just go to the library and check out books that look interesting to you. You will have a large chance of going to read the above mentioned books and find them dreadfully boring or contrived. That normally happens to me. I read what I want to read. When I take a suggestion from somebody who says "This book/author is the best on the planet, and don't read that other one, they suck" guess which one I'm more inclined to read?

Haven't read any posts, just looked at the title. I suggest some russian classics, a little ancient history, move over to modern philosophy, learn a new language, but firstly read Watership Down, you hraka.

I'm reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell right now, and it's very good. I put off reading it for years because the literary community went nuts over it (which usually means bad fantasy) and because of the length, but the author (whose name I can't remember off the top of my head) has done an amazing job with worldbuilding and incorporates the fantasy and the historical fiction very well.

If you happen to be looking for fun crime "fluff" with a series involved, I got wrapped up in Iris Johansen novels a while back. She writes well, especially for "fluff". (I'm picky about that.)
They're fun crime novels and, since I don't have a lot of time to read, I really like how you can get a "series" of them and not have to learn new characters every time.
They're easy and fun to read and breeze through.
They remind me of the comics...like an evil indulgence. Not really NECESSARY, but fun.
