I was reading Lulladreamy's v good fanfic "Hope's Diary" and was reminded of one of my favourite stories of all time - "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes, which is also in journal format.

The tale of mentally retarded Charlie Gordon who gets made into a genius by experimental surgery and then loses it all again (and the mouse Algernon who goes through the same process) is one that always makes me sob my little heart out (my eyes are filling up as I think about it 🙂).

So my question is - Which stories make you cry?

We're talking the power of the written word here - novels or short stories (graphic novels at a push) - so no nominations for the script for "The Body" 🙂 Have fun and don't get your keyboards too wet...

BTW if you haven't read "Flowers for Algernon" I cannot recommend it enough. I believe it's even being used as a school text these days - you lucky students.
 
The first time that i read " the amber spyglass" by Phillip Pullman (part of his dark materials trillogy) i cried i thought that it was so sad. i also cried while reading the shadow in the north. i just loved that book.
 
LOL, you said graphic novels and I thought of The Crow...that made me cry...

I don't really read sad books. But when I was little I know two that always got me (and still do when I think of them) Were The Cat Who Went To Heaven and The Velveteen Rabbit...yes, I am aware what a loser I am thank you...

You're not a loser sweetie. Although I've not heard of your childhood tearjerkers - obviously not available in the UK when I was a little 'un - I'm sure they must be perfectly good children's stories. I never said it had to be great literature did I?
 
I don't think I've ever cried while reading a book of any kind. I think the closest I've ever come to crying was when I read "A Walk To Remember" by Nicholas Sparks
 
When I was in fifth grade, my school was having a book war and we all had to read tons of books and then have a quiz-game on it in front of the entire grade. Anyway... one of the books we had to read was Mick Harte Was Here by Barbara Park. I seriously started crying right in the middle of class when I read it. Normally I wouldn't let other people see me cry, but I just couldn't help it. And it wasn't just the ending... the entire book was sad.

But besides that, the only other book that's made me cry is The Lost Slayer series by Christopher Golden. Already being a fan of the show - I feel like the characters are my best friends. So, when they hurt - I hurt. Each character had their own heartbreaking moments... Oz, Xander, Buffy, Willow, Giles, Wesley... And the amazing writing by Christopher Golden makes the characters shine, which made me cry even more.

Read these books!!
 
fro buffy books i only read one trilogy:
the one with the ghost roads involved i dont even remeber the title lol
but it was pretty good 🙂
 
The only time I've ever cried over a book is A Walk to Remember.
 
Mr. Pointy - Flowers For Algernon is one of my favorite short stories! That figures - you like it, I like it. You didn't by any chance take part in any cloning experiments in the early seventies, did you? 🙂

Jack London's The Call of the Wild made me cry when I was a kid, as did Where The Red Ferns Grow (which damn near killed me). LOL...kill a human and I yawn, but kill off a dog and I'm catatonic!

As an adult the only book I can recall crying over is Joseph Heller's Catch-22 - the bit where Yossarian is posing as a dead soldier because the dead soldier's family has come to visit - it's hilarious and completely heartbreaking at the same time. And Snowden's death...actually, I misted over in a bunch of places. You know, for being the funniest book ever written (which it is - funnier than the hilarious Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett combined), Catch-22 is pretty heavy on the tear-jerker moments!
 
Ahh I may be killed for this, but I didn't love Flowers for Algernon. Yes it made me cry, but it wasn't one of my favs. A Walk To Remember made me cry too! THe movie was great and made me cry also!
 
I'm sorry, but I NEVER cry.

The book that moved me the most was Romeo and Juliet by offcourse Shakespear.
 
I loved 'Little Women'- when Meg was dying and also' Seven Little Australians' by Ethel Turner...
 
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire always makes me cry...as well as The Amber Spyglass (so beautiful, poetic and heartbreaking, mirroring b/a in some ways) and Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier (i can't wait to see the movie, with Nicole Kidman and Jude Law) as well as The Wind on Fire trilogy by William Nicholson, which is just astonishing in its scope and power. Read them all!!
 
I cried in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when
Sirius died!
In the 4th one, I almost did with Cedric death, but I controled myself....

Dude, I cry over everything. Seriously, give me any book with something even remotely sad and I'm done for!
 
I am a sucker for really sweet and sensitive books for children. I just luv children's books and sometimes I browse in the store and read them. On occassion, one will make me cry and then I usually feel that it is a great book and I have to buy it!

As far as other stories go...well I cry often when I read touching things, so I can't pinpoint exactly one book!
 
There's a good few books I've not heard of here - and I'm very well read 😉. One day I'll get round to reading them all. It's good to see that the written word is still going strong although I did catch a mention of a movie! Naughty! OK, it was the movie of a book being discussed so I'll let you off as it's near Christmas 🙂

Thanks a lot! I was reading that and you just gave it away! Jeez! 😛 😉 😀 Sounds good though...maybe I'll WILL read it someday...lol.

I just remembered a book I read not too long ago entitled A Child Called It. I cried SO HARD reading that book! It's a true story about this boy that was abused by his mother...the things that he went through...it was beyond heartbreaking...

I often cried when reading my report cards but I guess those don't count do they...
