Books You Wish Had Never Been Made Into Movies

Everybody has at least one of these, the really great book that some filmmaker butchers, oftentimes ending up with a mess that doesn't even resemble the source. These are a couple of mine:

"High Crusade" by Poul Anderson. An alien space craft lands in a village in England during the time of the Crusades. A great adventure story that was made into a Monty Python wannabe, neither adventure nor comedy.

"The Wolfen" by Whitley Strieber. A species of canines evolved into sentient beings who have lived through the centuries living on the fringes of human civilization, feeding on the weak, ill, and homeless. The source of the legends of werewolves, but far more dangerous. The movie was nothing more than a substandard murder murder mystery with German Shepherds playing the wolfen.

So, what are your favorite movies that you wish had never become movies or TV shows?

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. I adore the book but couldn't bring myself to watch the film as the trailers looked so awful.

I never read harry potter but my sister is always babbling on about how she wishes they never made the movies cos the books are just so much better.

Queen of the Damned....the book was nothing like the movie!

PS. I love you. They trashed a book that was so delicate and powerful. The movie is a chick flick.

Bridge to Terabithia. The movie still made me cry just like the book did, but it really bothered me how they adapted the book into modern times, and it just made me angry. It should have stayed in the same time period as the book. Everything made more sense back then.

Angus, thongs and full frontal snogging. I loved reading the books of Georgia Nicolson when i was a teenager but i was really disappointed when i saw what they had done with the movie.

I have always hated books being made into movies. When you read a book you build an image up in your head of the settings and the characters and then you see it in a movie form and it is completely different to what you pictured 🙁

The Cat in the Hat- I could have lived my whole life without seeing Mike Myers in cat make-up.

Side note, I think there are probably a lot more GAMES that I wish hadn't been turned into movies...I'm looking at you Dead or Alive!

Lyri agrees: Urgh, I could never survive the book. The movie leaves me a blubbering wreck every single time.

Lyri, you mean you never finished reading the book? It's so beautiful..was it too slow or sad? Lizzie, you did right..you should read the book...maybe you'll understand why I'm against the movie..but you know, James was in it..I was yelling at my mom and my friends "That's SPIKE from Buffy..you know, the platinum blonde one!!!" and they'd look at me like I'm crazy..ahaha.

Everything is illuminated. I love the book to pieces, but the movie was just... cheap. It was nice looking, but I felt like they've made the story to something it wasn't. It wasn't supposed to be about a crazy guy and his crazy grandfather, it was about love and loss and writing.

I haven't even attempted to read the book. I saw the movie first, because James was in it, yes, but mostly because of Jeffery Dean Morgan. That man is...I don't have the words, lol. Sex on legs comes close, lol.

But, as Kean will verify, I am a HUGE sap! I cry at commercials! So this movie leaves me in pieces. Every. Single. Time. So, if the movie can reduce me to a crying mess like it does, I don't even want to THINK about what sort of state the book would leave me in. I think I'll give it a miss, lol.

Oh noo..if you're that emotional it's better to avoid the book or you'll never smile again! It's a strong book...btw, I think I cried at the movie too.

Does it count if they haven't yet even started production... cough cough Sweep... nothing will ever live up to the glory of the books.

If not, I will agree with Twilight. The Harry Potter movies don't bother me though, as long as you don't use them as a replacement for the books.

Blood and Chocolate. Amazing book, PAINFUL movie. I'm love Hugh Dancy and all, but he cannot make up for the train-wreck that was that movie. Even the author hates it.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Those movies were horrible. Just horrible.

It's Kind of a Funny Story. I haven't seen the movie, so I'm not going to comment on if it's good or bad... But I just don't see how that story could be half as powerful without reading it.

I agree with svp on this one. Blood and chocolate -the book was simply amazing, but, the movie was just awful. They changed almost everything, the only things they kept being the title and the characters' names. I really wanted to like the movie, but, it just annoys me. The only parts I liked were the wolf scenes, but, that's just because I love wolves, lol. Such a shame that they couldn't do justice to such a great book. 🙁

Beowulf. Seriously. If you can't do it right, don't do it at all. (And actually, the story is so archetypal at this point that we don't really need a Beowulf movie; the themes and plots show up in just about every monster movie.)
