This is my second fanfic, and I'm not sure how many parts there will be. For now I post the first 2 chapters, see how it goes.
This is a post "Chosen" fanfic, ignoring the comics completely.
Basically, the gang is in a new town, where they face a new evil, a very unusual evil, and realize they can't escape their destiny, it chases them, literally.
Here goes...
Title: BORN TO SLAY
CHAPTER ONE
"Remind me to never take you patrolling with me", Buffy mumbled under her breath, though wanted her little sister to hear, real bad.
"What? I just made an innocent comment on his pants! You do it too!"
The two sisters have just killed their third vampire of the night. They were cruising around the graveyard, walking between the tombstones like they owned it all.
"You don't say to a vampire that his pants have a tear on the back and you could see his a"”"
"Why not? It's a pun!" Dawn insisted.
"How is that a pun?" Buffy was still drawing a blank.
As much as she thought her younger sister was getting braver and braver with each patrol, she'd never liked the fact that she came with her. Not just because of the danger of slaying, but also because of the fact that she was still very annoying. Up until now, she didn't say a word about it. But right now, all she could think about was how much she'd like doing this alone. Because a Slayer is supposed to be alone. She was special, yet she was meant to be alone in her fight in the forces of darkness. Lately the scale has changed. By the fact that there are thousands of Slayers now, all over the world. Every Slayer in the world is alone, but not really. No one can know about them. Not even their families, their friends. And although they can now choose their destiny's path, this was still their destiny, and they can still fight and die.
Buffy stood aside of the evil fighting for a while. But like a hunter, her destiny had still chased her. Everywhere she went. There are still vampires in the world, there is still evil. But more than everything, it was part of her. That's who she was. A Slayer. Nothing can change that. Not even death.
"How come you never like my pants jokes?" Dawn tried again, sure of her punning skills.
"Look", Buffy told her, "I admire your will to joke with vampires before you kill them. But looking at their butts"¦"
"That's SO not what I was doing. I wanted to confuse him so I could kill him when he's down. And I did slay him in the end, didn't I?"
Buffy scoffed. There was really nothing to say by then. So she simply said, "Let's go home. I really need a hot shower".
They started walking away. Then Buffy stopped, sensing something. Maybe evil. She was really good at sensing things like that. Very specific things.
The wind was colder all of a sudden. She looked up and the moon was hiding behind the clouds. It wasn't rain that was looming. It was something else. Something big.
The morning after, Buffy was still in bed when the phone beside her bed rang loudly. She was grumpy. Who the hell dared waking her up from her beauty sleep?! It can't be that important, most bad things happen during nighttime.
Slowly she reached for the tube and weakly said, "Hello?" Then pulled herself up. "What? I don't"¦ huh?"
That was weird enough for her to push her small body out of the bed, throw some fresh clothes on, and skipping down the stairs.
She went into the kitchen, where Dawn was already full awake and eating funny shaped pancakes that she had learnt how to make from Tara. She noticed her sister's weird behavior.
"What's up?" she simply asked.
"I don't know", Buffy answered in confusion. "I just got a very weird phone call".
"From the Easter Bunny?"
"What do you mean?"
"Nothing, just"¦ that'd be a weird phone call."
But Buffy didn't laugh. It was obvious she was a night person.
"It was Faith. She told me there is an injured vampire at her place. He needed help".
"I don't understand", Dawn was confused herself.
"Me neither. She didn't say much, just to come over".
"Maybe it's a trap. Maybe Faith is evil again. And she's using a really poor excuse for you to come and get killed. I mean, an injured vampire? Come on".
"I don't know what it's about. I just need to get there".
"Want me to come with?" Dawn offered herself.
"No, no way", Buffy said and skipped her way out.
Dawn called after her, "I'm really good at slaying! No pants jokes this time, I promise!"
But Buffy was already out of the hearing radius.
At a small apartment building, a small hand knocked on Faith's apartment door. It was Buffy's. It didn't take long till it opened by Faith, who was standing there, looking alarmed.
"Finally!" she said to the other Slayer.
"What's going on?" Buffy immediately took an interest. It wasn't an everyday affair to hear that an injured demon is seeking help from a Slayer. Okay, maybe once, with that demon back then, when the mayor of Sunnydale was planning to ascent. But that was a whole different story, because the vampire was actually at risk. Must be big if it came down to that!
Faith pulled Buffy in, and led her into her bedroom. A vampire covered with blood was lying there, looking weak and in major pain. It was a young vampire guy, pretty good looking too. He looked up at Buffy as she walked in.
"Who are you?" he investigated Buffy with a little amount of fear in his voice.
"She's another Slayer", Faith took the role of answering Buffy's answers.
"I'm Buffy", she completed her fellow Slayer.
"Whoa", the vampire backed off a little, "you didn't say you were gonna bring another Slayer into this!"
Buffy was both confused and understanding. How could she not be? It was a vampire who got scared from a Slayer. "It's okay. Just tell me what's going on. What's your name"?
"Jesus", he answered, partly joking. But he wasn't laughing. "Branden", he then corrected himself.
"Okay, Brenden", Buffy continued, "Could you tell me what happened to you?"
He hesitated. But then continued. "I was attacked. By a vampire".
'That's it?' Buffy thought to herself. But it couldn't be. She sensed it was something bigger than that. Must be.
"It wasn't just a vampire", Faith assured Buffy's suspicion. "It was a Slayer-vampire".
CHAPTER TWO
"What are you saying?" Giles questioned his former Slayer in wonder.
"She's saying we've got a vampire who's still a vampire, and it's evil, and we should tell it to go to hell where it belongs", Xander took the chance to voice his opinion.
"That's not what I'm saying", said Buffy, scolding Xander a bit. "I'm saying we should find that Slayer-vampire".
"Buffy", Willow said with a concern in her voice, "do you really think it's wise? To trust a vampire? For all we know, it could be completely messing with you. And Faith. And as for Faith"¦ well, I'm not sure she's"”"
"I think we came a long way not to trust Faith now", Buffy protected her former enemy. She spoke from her heart. After all she's been through with Faith last year, she saw no reason not to trust her. She's proven herself, and she deserved her trust.
"I hear you, Buffy", Giles threw his head back in frustration. "But we should walk into this with precise caution".
"But you agree that we should".
"We'll look into this. But I can't promise anything". He approached her and stood closer to her. "Look, I know you feel like you need to help. Especially now that you can hang your stake and lay back after years of fighting evil. I know you must feel the need to keep fulfilling your destiny. And you've been doing just that, when you go out on patrols. You don't need to look for evil when it doesn't come to you".
"But it does come to me", she kept pushing. "It came right in front of my face, and I can't ignore it".
They all looked at her, unwillingly. She continues. "I know you guys thought it was all over. I know you were spent after the big fight at where there is a big crater now. And I know we choose together to come to this small town in order to find some peace and quiet, and be free of big bads. But to tell you the truth"¦ we can't run away from this. It would chase us forever everywhere we go. I've been patrolling almost every night, because I can't not to. It's who I am. And it's stupid to run away from it. It's who I am. And that's who you are. Evil fighters".
"Then let's get to work", Xander surprisingly said, looking determined and even strong. He was willing to get the strength he used to have in Sunnudale, in the big fight. And as Buffy said, it's all chasing them. All of them.
"Where do we start?" Accepted Willow quietly. She wasn't a wallflower anymore. She was a fighter. She was strong, she was powerful. She was a goddess.
"Well", Buffy smiled to herself after getting her back covered by her best friends, "I suggest we go hunting. Find that falling out Slayer. She's giving a bad name to us, Slayers".
That night, Buffy was walking back and forth across the house, looking for the right weapon and the best strategy. This wasn't a regular fight. Which means there's need for irregular approach.
A Slayer-vampire. What does that mean? Will she have Slayer strength, or vampire strength? Or, Buffy's heart skipped a beat, both?
Buffy had promised Giles not to go out to the fight without further research. But he knew Buffy was lying when she said she wouldn't. Buffy had no doubt that Giles was sitting in his house, researching, at this very moment. 'So half a promise is done', Buffy thought to herself.
Dawn watches Buffy skipping from one place to another, like it was a race. A race of 'who will get to the Slayer-vampire first'.
"I'm telling you", Dawn said, almost begging, "I can be an essential".
"No", Buffy said strictly.
"Do you really think you'd better fight alone in this? I mean, it's not an ordinary vampire".
"Faith is going with me".
"But"”"
"No, Dawn! This is very dangerous. Patrolling for a stupid lame ass vampire is one thing. The Slayer-vampire could have an enormous strength! We don't know what we're facing yet".
"Listening to Giles is probably a good advice here", Dawn pushed Buffy's button, who pierced her with a shooting glare.
Buffy grabbed a large ax. Good for both, vampires or Slayers. She'd also found a shocker in the weapon chest, which she didn't even remember owning.
Buffy walked toward the door, opened it and said to Dawn right before she exited, "Bedtime is 10:00".
She left Dawn there, standing and frowning.
Buffy wandered in the graveyard, holding her ax. Alone. 'Where the hell is Faith?' she wondered. They set an appointment and Faith wasn't even there. 'Typical', Buffy grunted.
"BOO!" came from behind her, all of a sudden. It was Faith, of course, messing with the other Slayer. But Buffy was too tense and prepared to get scared by a wee little 'boo'.
"You're ready?" Buffy skipped to the important part.
"Gosh, B. How about a hello?"
"We have a work to do".
"Wow. You're really all work and no play Buffy. You used to be fun, B".
"Let's just do this".
"'Kay". Faith said shortly, getting the hint.
They started patrolling, both alert and ready to anything that can jump on them"¦ or whatever Slayer-vampires do.
It was quiet. Very quiet. Until something amazing happened. Faith started talking again.
"You know, we don't have to do it this way".
"What do you mean?" Buffy questioned, really not understanding what Faith was cluing.
"We could split up. It's just one lame vampire, and we have very different methods, we've proven that before".
"Okay, first of all, Faith, this isn't a lame vampire. It might be something big. And we can't split up because of"¦ everything I just said".
"Hmm, toughy. I like that!"
"Faith, stop! Just stop!"
"Jees, what is with you tonight?" Faith was almost scared for Buffy's sanity.
"Sorry, it's just"¦ I'm having a bad feeling about all this. I'm sensing something, and that's never good".
"So you're Vision Girl again?"
"Never stopped being one. But this isn't a vision. This is gut feeling. A strong one".
"Care to share?"
"Can't we just patrol? We have a potential big bad here".
Faith halted, grabbing Buffy's shoulder. "Did you hear?"
"Hear what?" Buffy looked around.
"That rustle, Vision Girl. There". Faith pointed at the dark corner behind a tombstone.
Buffy and Faith looked at each other, and said together, "Two, three!"
They charged, Buffy with her ax, and Faith with her stake, ready to either stab or cut off the head of whatever they were about to face. But there was nothing to face. There was nothing behind the tombstone. They both sighed in disappointed.
"So"¦" Buffy started, "I guess she should show up any minute now".
"Guess so", Faith agreed.
"We'll wait".
The two girls saw the moon moving from one side of the sky to another, the hours went by. And there was still nothing. It reminded Buffy the old days where she was the only active Slayer, and her and Giles waited at the cemeteries for hours, instead of her going out on dates. Why did she get into all that again?
The sunrise was almost there, not waiting for no one. Not even the Slayers. They both sat on a stone, their hands are barely holding the weapons by now. Their eyes almost closed. It's been a while since they've been through that. All night long patrolling. But in a way, it was kind of nice. Reminded the old times that were almost forgotten.
Buffy turned to Faith after a long quietness and said, "Faith?"
"Huh?"
"Where did the vamp say he's been hurt by the Slayer-vampire?"
"Leonardfield Cemetery", Faith still didn't quite get.
"And where are we?" Buffy kept going.
"...Richstones. Oh".
