Re-watching the second season of Dollhouse, watching 'Vows' it got me wondering - do yout think Boyd was sincere (somewhere inside his little heart) or was he just playing Claire to get her where he wanted her?

When he's discussing her scars I can guess that he's trying to provoke her, but he seems very genuine at the same time.
When Claire says that she's scared to have them removed (at the consequence of becoming a doll again) Boyd takes her side, saying he will never allow that:

Dr. Claire Saunders: What if she goes over your head?
Boyd Langton: I'm very tall.

Boyd Langton: Every person I know is pretty poorly constructed. Everyone has an excuse for not dealing. But eventually, that's all they are - excuses.
Dr. Claire Saunders: What's yours?


So what do you guys think. Does he ask her out on a date because he wants one or because he wants her to turn to him if ever she leaves?

His interest in her (as she so astutely points out) was virtually zero until he found out that she was a doll, begging the question - didn't he know earlier? Shouldn't he have?

Does the fact that he turned her into Clyde 2.0 suggest that he didn't care or that he in fact did? (Clyde did use to be his best friend and I suspect Clyde 2.0 has been his only long-term companion)
If things had gone according to plan do you think he would have allowed her to become Claire again?

Basically - did Boyd care at all or was it all just a game?
 
Boyd wasn't supposed to be the villain right? He became it when the had to wrap the show up? Or have I missed the target completely? And yes, he should most definitely have known she was a doll from the begining. One should never look for mistakes in storylines in Whedons work. 😛

So I definitely think his feelings were real at the time. Now looking back with "new" information it can be totally different of course. So I'll chicken out and say it was a little of both.

Boyd's change into the Big Bad is the only thing about Dollhouse which didn't make a lot of sense to me. I'm gonna say that Boyd didn't care for Saunders at all and was just using he/she/it as a pawn in his game. I do think he was intrigued by Saunders but I think he would have used another vessel for Clyde 2.0 if he had really cared for her.
I do think, however, that he did care for Echo in his own twisted way.
 
That was definitely a fine example of the greatest Whedon invention of all the 'plot twist.' Boyd's intentions in light of the rest of the series are always a little cloudy, which I think was the point of revealing him to be the puppet master that he turned out to be. As for whether or not he actually had feelings for Dr. Saunders, I'd have to say no, it was just another move in his elaborate game to control the mind wipe tech.
 
I'm going to say he genuinely cared for her or that he really is just one twisted mothershutmymouth. If he didn't care for her he could have just pulled her out, wiped her, made her whatever he needed her to be.

Then again, he could have just been toying with her.
 
I just finished Dollhouse, and I loved it. Dr. Saunders is my favorite character. I had, for pretty much the whole show, wanted her and Boyd to be together. I thought that she had left for good at the end of "Vows", so I was super thrilled and happy when she reappeared and kissed Boyd! So I was just smiling thoughout all of "Getting Closer", until Claire went and talked to Bennet. I was immediately suspicious, because I saw her hands were behind her back and she was just sort of... off. Then there was much brain-blowing and heartbreak, and I was devestated. But I kept thinking that Boyd would bring her back. Not so. I was crushed. My favorite Dollhouse ship lasted roughly half an episode and it wasn't quite real.

Anyways, I think that Boyd was mostly just using her. I think that he might have cared for her a little bit, and that she cared for him, but that's about it.

I really liked Boyd and Saunders too. Saunders is a great character
Since the ending of the series was so rushed because of the cancellation, it's just hard to know. I don't feel like Boyd's character (as the founder) & motivations are entirely clear to me. They just didn't have time to flesh it out as much as they would have with another season. I really liked Boyd & Saunders together so it is kind of sad to think that he was just using her (I think he was).

But can I say...Amy Acker as Clyde 2.0, wow! She did such a fabulous job overall in this series.
 
I think in his own twisted way he did care for her. His speech in episode 12 shows that in a sick way he wanted to keep the people he cared about near him and by using Whisky as Clyde that was one way to do it.

If he'd loved or cared for her in any sane kind of way I think he would have let her go.
 
It is such a shame that Joss' shows don't always get the proper send off they deserve. The only one I felt comfortable with being completed was BtVS. Some would say Angel had run its course, but I was not satisfied completely with the way it was finished. Firefly and Dollhouse never got the chance to fully stretch their legs, so to speak.

It's true, but Epitaph Two was so, so amazing. If the show had to die, I'm glad they did it in the way they did.
