Brainbuster from This Year's Girl

I also agree with you and I think male slayer agrees with you too, because he seemed to be saying the same thing earlier in this thread.

Considering the way it is shown on BTVS, it makes the most sense to believe the "essence" as I believe it was being called, is made up of both mind and soul, and that is what is passed between Buffy and Faith.

That isn't the problem though. Here's the problem. Jules says

If you go with that theory Buffy's body would have to die with Faith in it for the next slayer to be called.

If this is true which specific action is necessary to call the next slayer. If it's the death of the body, this implies bodydeath is the trigger. If that we're true, wouldn't the trigger be in Faith's body.

It can't be the mere act of the migration of the essence, because that's what created the problem in the first place. Faith's essence left her body, and transfered into buffy's body. No new slayer was called.

Or...are you saying it is the combination of two factors; bodydeath (any body will do), and essence migration, that calls the next slayer.

If this is true wouldn't it create a rather simplistic way of stopping the slayer line. Separate the body from the essence as we saw done in Orpheus or This Year's Girl with no new slayer being called. Transfer it to a comatose body. We saw body transferance is possible in This Year's Girl. Now keep the body containing the slayer essence alive, but comatose. Faith was in a coma and no new slayer was called.

No new slayer called. No old slayer headaches. You telling me The First Evil couldn't, or wouldn't do something like that if it was possible? It's like having a slayer in the freezer, and you don't thaw it out until you need it. Actually you could prevent a new slayer from being called indefinitely by transfering the essence from comatose body to comatose body.

So if it's possible to have the essence split in two and residing in both bodies, it's also possible it may be nessecary to have both bodies die before the slayer line can be passed on.

Does this mean there are now TWO CHOSEN ONES, because if that's true, how important was that whole "Chosen one thing". Does it have any influence on who The Slayer was, or was it just a clever little plot gimmick designed to give the series a killer promo." There can be only one ".

If you believe when the earliest people produced a child and maybe that child had those people's combined souls to make one unique soul of their own. Everyone is different, so maybe that's 'cause all our souls are combined of different souls that died much earlier to make one unique person. You can have a bit of someone else's soul in you and they lived during 400 B.C. and another part of your soul is made up of another personality of someone else's soul in another time and place. Anyone getting this? It's kind of a reincarnation.

If this was so in the Buffyverse and Buffy had a Slayer that had come before her's soul that made up a part of her soul, when Buffy died, two Slayers would've been called after "Prophecy Girl." Maybe that's not possible at all in the Buffyverse. I hope I made clearer sense than what it sounded like in my head.

Well that's the dillema isn't it? In the buffyverse you're not supposed to be allowed to have two chosen one's. You can have two slayers, but not two chosen one's.

If I understand your model, multiple chosen one's could be called.

To me, that's one of the things that makes the This Year's Girl puzzle interesting. Once you know you can split the slayer up into different combinations of mind, body, or soul, it creates a situation where multiple Chosen Ones can exist at the same time and place.

The only solution I can think of to this is if the trigger that calls the next slayer is activated only when the slayer's soul, or essence passes on to the next world.

The essence can be passed on within this reality as we saw in This Year's Girl, and Orpheus. No slayer will be called. When the essence passes completely off the mortal coil however, as we can assume happened in Prophecy Girl the mechanism would be activated that calls the next slayer.

This might even explain why Buffy had to have her crew actually enter the Hellmouth in Chosen. Perhaps it was all about getting Faith into that reality. In this way the slayer line could be activated.

I seriously doubt ME ever considered any of this. Nevertheless it makes a kind of cockeyed sense, don't you think

Well the way I look at it, when Buffy and Faith switched bodies, everything around them recongnized them as the whose body they were in except for ofcourse their Aura which changed once they switched bodies, but its like in Chosen, Willow made all of the potentials into Slayers but the line still passes through Faith, until Faith dies none of the other slayers will be able to activate another Slayer since it will probably end up passing through 95% of them. This is what led to the story line in Fray, where there were Slayers but none of them we actually called for duty for over a 100 years until Fray was born.

My first reaction would be "Huh? Where did you hear that?"

On the other hand you mention Fray and what you say makes sense. Fray is referred to on a number of occasions as the future's chosen one. This suggests the slayer line is still being passed down through a single slayer in the future.

So I'd agree with you, but the question remains, once you split Faith into different bits of Body, Mind, or soul, which one is the real Faith, and how does the slayer line know when to activate itself? If the body has to die, this implies the slayer releasing trigger is in the body. Therefore it should be the death of Faith's body that calls for a new slayer. It can't be the simple release of the essence from the body, because we've seen that done without a slayer being called. If it's a combination of the two (body and essence) then both the body of Faith and the body of Buffy would have to die to release the proper combination.

The heart has to stop beating(or head ripped off) for another lsayer to be called, since in S1 The Master killed buffy by letting her drowned and she couldnt get any air to her lungs so her heart stopped ofr one minute until Xander did CPR on her and got her heart beating agian...thats what I think.

The Shadowmen created the slayer line and the rules governing the "There can be only one" idea of passing the line on from generation to generation of slayer.

By your model, the Shadowmen would have created a rule whereby the slayerline would have been placed into the body of Faith. When the body of Faith meets the criteria for physical death, the next slayer would be called.

What you are saying then, is even though the mind and soul of Faith are placed in Buffy's body, it will be the body of Faith that will have to physically die before the next slayer is called. This in spite of the fact someone else's essence inhabits that body. Are you sure, that's what you want to say?

well thats what im going to say for now since I dont feel like trying to go into it majorly, when Buffy and Faith switched bodies the elements probably got confused and Faith is still a slayer in her she holds the power to activate another slayer, so I say body since after Buffys heart stopped beating she was dead for a minute and Kendra was activated and well one minute I dont think is long enough for the soul to depart the body under these circumstances. After Drusilla cut Kendras throat, she died like a 2 minutes after that and Faith was called...

I think in this situation it will take both the body and the essence to die. I know I sed before that it just needed the essence, but for arguements sake I've changed my mind..lol..

Anyway, I think the essence needs to die as well as the body. I know the essence left Faith's body but it never died. In this case there would then be 2 more active slayers. If you think about it, you kill the body (Faith) and that activates a slayer and then you kill the essence (Buffy) and that activates another slayer. That may result in the next generation of slayers being slightly weaker.

This is where my theory of Fray comes in. Now I've not read any of the comics so I'm not a 100% sure of the actual story line, but i'm sure I read somewhere that Fray possessed the Slayers physical powers but her brother possessed the prophetic powers i.e. the dreams. I think that was explained because they were twins, but again I'm not sure. so correct me if I'm wrong.

So, if Faith's body was killed, maybe the slayer called after would have the physical powers and if the essence was killed in Buffy's body maybe the next slayer would have the prophetic dreams.

Yes, Jules. You are correct. In Fray, Melaka gets the slayers physical powers, and her twin brother Harth, gets the slayer dreams and prophecy ability.

This makes things even more confusing, because Joss tells us Melaka is the Chosen One. If Melaka dies how can she pass on the dreams when she never had them?

As you said, this suggests you can pass on the slayer powers in different portions. If so it's possible Faith/Buffy had the physical powers trigger in This Year's Girl, and Buffy/Faith had the dreams trigger. If this were true, and they were to die at different intervals would a different slayer be called for each group of powers, or would one group of powers be lost forever, or would the next slayer called receive the physical powers, then the dream powers in different intervals?

Well Fray and her brother were born from the same egg while in side their mother just sperated into 2 and that is why things got split.

Slayers do not pass on their powers that is not how it works, each potential already has the power in them its just waiting for it be unlocked so they dont share powers.

Frays brother was also turned into a vampire and he still has the dream so what does that say?

What if Slayers were turned into vampires? would they have double the streangth? Frays brother is a vampire and he still has his side of the slayer thing and remember that vampires are souless plus the fact that Slayers are part demon.

You can only assume that each potential has the power already in them because there has never been an incident to prove other wise, there has never been an incident where the body and the essence where split. Ok, so you can use that theory the other way around as well.

They may have the power already in them but it may be the death of the body and essence that trigger them gifts in the next slayer. We already know there can be only one true slayer, so shouldn't that work the same with the gifts.

I would assume that if this theory where true, then there would always be two slayers called, one to pass on the physical and one to pass on the dreams.

Buffy stated in Chosen that each girl in the world with the potential to become a Slayer will be slayer after Willows spell and she already said that they have the streangth in them during hte season.

To further my explination is kept inside the episode Helpless: There is a drug that is able to temporally take away The Slayer inside of them(the streangth etc..) but it comes back after a few days, if they can do that then its highly possiable Potentials alreday have the streangth and things in them.

And we know that may be possiable to seperate the slayer from the human but there is only one known way possiable would be by the demon that seperated Xander into 2.

Ok, Buffy was the slayer but she was never all knowing about what that actually entailed. There'd never been a situation where it was tested whether or not there was two parts to triggering the full potential of a slayer.

In season 7 Buffy talks alot about the potentials having the abilities already inside them and I'm not argueing that point, Willows does a spell that activates all the potentials powers. But if the powers weren't activated by the spell they would need to have been activated by something else. In the past when a slayer has died both the body and essence have died, therefore triggering both powers. They may have the potential to have both the physical and prophetic powers of a slayer but for them to be triggered the original slayer has to lose them abilities.

Also in Helpless the only thing addressed was Buffy's strength as a slayer, nothing was mentioned of her prophetic abilities.

Kendra was called when Buffy's body died, but Buffy's essence never truly died. I don't think her soul fully left her body when the body died.

Speaking of souls, how long does it take before the soul leaves the body and you're truly dead. I think that Buffy was able to be revived 'cause her soul was still there minutes after her "death." The only thing is, though, in "The Prodigal," Angel says that after Trevor Lockley is dead, he can enter the residence. Less than a second after Lockley's body drops to the floor, Angel is able to enter. Does that mean that his soul left the body that quickly? Or when his heart stopped, Angel can enter? The body is still alive with some living tissue, so his body was not truly dead. Just a thought.

Fine--let's go to This Year's Girl. Buffy and Faith swap bodies. Here's where it gets confusing...

Wasent it "Who am I?" cause well technically it happened in this years girl, but that was only 2 mins of it but most of it occured in who am i, so I'm really confussed now :-S

Once Buffy and Faith switch bodies as they did in This Year's Girl, it can lead to a 3 page thread of questions, and confusion, as to what's really what in the Buffyverse.

Who Are You dealt with Buffy and Faith's confusion.

This thread deals with yours and mine confusion created by what happened at the end of This Year's Girl

oh ok, cause when i first saw this thread I thoght it was like mainly about the whole episode and not just the end kinda
