Brits are stealing billions of dollars in groceries

Organic avocados are expensive. So are fresh figs and heirloom tomatoes and the like. You know what’s cheap? Carrots. Which is why British supermarket shoppers have been weighing their produce as carrots at self-checkout stations, totaling more than $4 million in supermarket theft in the past four years. The Independent reports the practice of ringing up expensive produce as a cheaper item has become so common that some shoppers don’t even see it as a crime.

A professor of criminology at the University Of London, Emmeline Taylor, first looked into this behavior at Australian grocery stores before realizing it was also happening in Britain. In one store, she found that receipts indicated customers had purchased more “carrots” than the supermarket ever had in stock to begin with, some up to 18 kilograms (about 40 pounds) in one trip.

Onions are also cheap, making them a popular decoy produce to cover for the expensive broccolini and non-GMO lettuce and organic medjool dates shoppers are actually buying. In 2012, a man was charged with stealing close to $600 worth of groceries from a London Sainsbury’s supermarket over the course of three months. The former international hockey star admitted he weighed other types of groceries as loose onions on approximately 20 shopping trips. Fun fact: Turns out that store didn’t even sell loose onions, but they were available as an option at the standardized self-checkout menu.

Is there some sort of technological solution to this? Maybe a camera that can detect veggie shapes or sizes in addition to their weight? With more supermarkets going all-digital and losing their human cashiers, decoy produce is a problem they’ll avoid solving at their own expense.

Heheh. It never occured to me to weigh up other items and put them through as other things. Some just miss the scanner, especially when they put the checkouts in the middle of the store.

See how much you can learn here?
I assumed it printed the name of the item on the label. Never even thought this was an option. I'm really surprised the supermarkets don't have anything in place to stop this.

It's loose produce, so there's no label to scan, you put in on the scale and press the button for which item you can and it calculates the cost of the item

The machines I've used then print out a label with a bar code to stick on the bag. I've never really paid attention to it, just assumed it also said carrots or avocado or whatever it is at the top. Seems I've been over paying for years!

But then if it's a self service machine who would be checking what label you stuck on it?

We have randomized checks here, so you can't pay (or leave as you need the receipt to get out of the store) without every now and then having your bags inspected to make sure you scanned everything properly. (and the name of the produce is on the label you print too). I'm sure people still trick the system of course, but they do run the risk of getting caught.

Oh my God! I do this all the time; at Ralphs, where I always shop. 😈 It's one of the benefits of using self checkout. Many bakery items don't have a bar code, so when I go to pay, I hit "search item." Ah ha! "Enter quantity." I might have 4 or 5 donuts or muffins in the bag, but l'll indicate that I have ONE. Good thing it's a brown paper bag.

I put candies in my pockets in Auchan all the time. With their prices it's only fair

That's why we don't have many of those here lmao in UK i cheated all the time but come on, everything is already expensive. at least in London

I can't believe the amount of people openly admitting they rob these places.

Well I don't rob british shops but i can say that here they rob us too. The amount of expired products in shops is ridiculous.
But mostly I think people do it just to feel adventurous or something lmao like yay we've cheated the system(no you didn't)

I accidentally stole a toaster at a self checkout once. If it doesn't scan and it's wasting my time it just gets bagged. Though I rarely shop in person anyway, as I can't stand crowds of idiots.

Hey, sometimes it's fun. A few weeks ago, I stole a fully cooked, roast chicken when I was slightly high. I just WANTED it, and it cost way too much. Though I admit, this was really, really stupid. A couple of donuts is one thing; a seven pound chicken is quite another. 😂

how is that even possible? o_O
I see people do this all the time in CA. I might have accidentally hit the regular produce button rather than the organic button a time or two.

Grocery stores just need to put the cameras up like the ones they have at Target checkouts to shame people into being honest.
