Grocery stores just need to put the cameras up like the ones they have at Target checkouts to shame people into being honest.

The four food groups are alcohol, caffeine, sugar and preservatives. Organic food does not have preservatives, so they should cost less. It reminds me of how the lead character changed in Golden Girls from Bea Arthur to Estelle Getty:

Bea: Ma, You shouldn't eat that, it's full of preservatives.
Estelle: When you get to my age, you need all the preservatives you can get.

They're at the bottom of the cart...at check out, I scan everything else, and put it into the bags in the cart. And...um...well, somehow that chicken managed to hide itself beneath everything else in the cart. How. Strange. 😈

I once walked out without paying from Kmart. But I walked right passed the door guard lady and she didnt even stop me. That was a learning experience. I learnt not risk trying that with trackie dacks on.

The amount of expired products in shops is ridiculous.

I think they are really obsessive with that in Oz, but my local shop has nothing but expired goods for 3X the cost of coles. I would never steal from them though. They are my neighbours. Plus, I'd probably be their only customer for the entire day, and they would notice.

I bet the manned check out would do that too - the amount of times I have been asked by check out people what vegetable they are scanning is hilarious.

Ugh cameras would push me more to online ordering. Smaller stalls already have their window lined with "this person is banned" or "this person stole" its gross. I mainly order online now anyway cos they do all the heavy lifting - but the real specials are only found when you go into the store. Mostly, not worth it for me haha. I sorta hate that there appears to be a move away from cash for fresh local produce in other parts of the world. Markets are dying here too - just seems sad 🙁

I think the supermarkets should just shrug this off and say "oh well, free food for all once in a while". There is Not enough of that in the world. I can't even count how many times were were given free toothpaste and condoms in high school...

Well, that's small local shops, I would never steal from an owner. I am talking about huge chain stores. But then again, I don't steal but most people do and I can see how they do it and honestly I don't judge them...Well not always. If I would see someone stealing on idk farmer's market that's a different story.

It's a shame there's so few independently owned shops around me. Everything is chains and franchises. I hate these homogenous fronts where every company thinks they're being innovative and promoting initiative, when it's all BS. I worked for a large company where we were allowed to set prices for our accounts (large bulk orders), but would be encouraged to sell at a loss to make budget, but then also be penalised for not making a profit. Please the shareholders, and screw the staff and the customers. It's nice to screw them back when you can.

Oh my God! I do this all the time; at Ralphs, where I always shop. 😈 It's one of the benefits of using self checkout. Many bakery items don't have a bar code, so when I go to pay, I hit "search item." Ah ha! "Enter quantity." I might have 4 or 5 donuts or muffins in the bag, but l'll indicate that I have ONE. Good thing it's a brown paper bag.

We have a No Frills supermarket near us which is about the area of a football field, one of four in Mississauga, which is listed as Chris & Stacey's No Frills indicating that the franchisee, not the company pays for any losses such as theft. Some chains are making big bucks but that does not mean the franchisees are doing the same. I have no sympathy for thieves at all. Hell isn't hot enough for them. If you don't like the prices at a store, walk out. But not with stolen merchandise.

Exactly. The corporations insulate themselves from the loss of profits, the shop owner, and their staff, are the ones affected.

Quite a few employees at Ralphs market told me the store has a policy of tossing all service deli food if it hasn't been sold by closing time...the store near me closes at 10pm, and they actually DO throw away tons of perfectly edible stuff. Trays of fried, barbequed, and baked chicken, ribs, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, etc. It's the silliest thing I've ever seen. Though I'm sure that some of the employees manage to sneak some food home. I hope so!

I have no sympathy for thieves at all. Hell isn't hot enough for them. If you don't like the prices at a store, walk out. But not with stolen merchandise.

Depends on the state. It might not be stealing but could be trespassing. Many restaurants, schools and chain stores lock their bins.

From what I've heard about the aged care homes and public hospitals, day old food would be a welcome gourmet meal lol

I was not advocating eating out of the trash bin; it's not a serving table. Merely taking the food back to your place of residence and eating it there.
