Brits are stealing billions of dollars in groceries

I was not advocating eating out of the trash bin; it's not a serving table. Merely taking the food back to your place of residence and eating it there.

I know what you meant. πŸ˜› But I'm not digging food out of a trash bin to take home either. Honestly, I'd rather starve. I can turn on the anorexia any time I choose. It's a gift. As a matter of fact, I just might do it soon....since I've gained a little weight over the past year. 😨

Clearly you've stolen too much food.

No, I've just been a slacker. I USED to make daily exercise a priority, at least two hours a day, six days a week. But I just...stopped. Then I began eating more. That's winding down now, and thank God for that. Basically, I've eaten everything I used to dream of, and I'm kinda bored with it.

Plus, being thin in Los Angeles is fun. Working out, having insane abs and clearly defined clavicles...it's a high. I'm a vain Leo and I enjoy compliments. 😈 Looks of adoration are also welcome.

Good cardio running from the po-po after stealing your food. Plus work on bi- and triceps holding all that chicken you steal whilst you run.

No, I think not. 😘 However, you are truly hilarious this morning. πŸ˜ƒ

Exactly. The corporations insulate themselves from the loss of profits, the shop owner, and their staff, are the ones affected.
I tend not to have much sympathy for those who sign up to be a franchisee. All the responsibility and accountability, with zero of the power. I know what that is like, to work in that backwards environment. Maybe people have too much blind optimism?

I use self-service checkouts all the time (like practically every day) and out of those times I've been bag checked maybe 5 times.....

I'm one of those super honest types anyway. Recently something I bought didn't scan on my little scanny device, so instead of putting it in the bag anyway or asking for help, I put it back on the shelf and chose the more expensive alternative which would scan instead.

I buy avocados all the time too. I wish they were as cheap as carrots. Our local greengrocer sells them for 50p each but they're always rock hard and never seem to ripen, whereas the ripe supermarket ones at Β£1 each are always perfectly ripe. I swear it's some sort of conspiracy.... πŸ™„

I love conspiracies πŸ˜€ I wish avos were as cheap as carrots too. Have you tried putting the cheapies next to a banana?

There were avos at the record low price of $2 at my local today - but also rock hard and I aint waiting til next week to eat it!

I checked - the expired pineapples were 75c cheaper than the fresher tins LOL. I went for the cheap one. I am a cheapskate who will find the lowest price unit. I am best at maths in grocery stores πŸ˜›

My favourite online ordering trick is to order the coles brand "specials" in bulk but because they then run out of stock, they have to give me a better brand substitute for the same price.

We should go shopping together lmao
I forgot to add a bit - the storage for large chains compared with local stores is very, very different which is why the produce is different. Here - they semi or snap freeze produce before it hits the shelves. By the time I buy a coles apple (for example) it could be up to 10 months old. (edited, i thought it was 6 but google says 10-12 months for apples)

At one time, I thought self-serve checkouts were going to eliminate cashiers, which would have been a disaster for the cashiers, but now, I think it will actually increase the number of cashiers.

We were in a similar position at a company I worked at where we were doing medical imaging by coating a thin-film transistor plate as used in a liquid crystal display display with selenium and using it as an x-ray sensor and we also had a selenium-coated liquid crystal display we were working on for the same purpose. We had an unusual partner: BASF. They have been making x-ray film for ages so we thought they just wanted to get in on the new technology before it supplanted film. But they said it was a totally different reason: the paperless office uses more paper than an earlier office, the filmless x-ray office would use more film than the earlier x-ray office. After all, doctors were trained to diagnose things from film images, not computer screens, so they might take more pictures (because it is easy) then print them all out because it is what they are trained to work from.

In the same way, the self-serve checkout may require more cashiers than the more normal checkout lanes, if for no other reason than to prevent @Amber Bunny Slippers from walking off with all their inventory.

Depends on the state. It might not be stealing but could be trespassing. Many restaurants, schools and chain stores lock their bins.

From what I've heard about the aged care homes and public hospitals, day old food would be a welcome gourmet meal lol

Since you enjoy stories from my past, I don't mind sharing that one trick we kids used was to call certain pizza places and place a big order. This was back in the 1990s and they were able to tell if a call came from a pay phone (which they would not accept) but would typically do it otherwise. When no one picked it up, they'd toss most to all of them in the dumpster, still in their boxes so free of trash, and sometimes even still warm.

And we'd be waiting. Lots of dumpsters were "claimed" by someone homeless so we had to share, but one or two more mouth(s) wasn't a big deal (more than once we'd share drink, drugs, and/or smokes with him and/or he with us while we waited). 'Course the pizza places could've cut a lot of that out by dumping it out of the box, but for many people, filthy food is better than no food at all. More importantly, the majority of people get by on the least effort they can get away with, and dumping the pizza out of the box would be a waste of effort for most employees (but we always made large orders because they tended to keep one or two boxes for themselves).

I seriously doubt this trick would work today, especially as it seems locked dumpsters is the standard these days.
