Wasn't James supposed to play in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain?

That would have been cool. I'm raelly looking forward to this film.

i think i did hear something about James being in this, but something happened and he turned it down/or his part was recast. i don't have all the details.

but i am SO looking forward to this film!! you have no idea!!

AB, you should SO see this movie! it is excellent! i loved it.
unfortuantly, you don't really see much in the 'nude' scenes...the camera's too far away! 😉

Are you sure about this? As far back as late 2003 Variety reported that Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger were in negotiations to take the lead male roles in this film. It could be that James Marsters had some connection to it prior to that when Gus van Sant was being touted as the director and the production was attached to Columbia Picture, but as far as I know casting had not begun back then. I might be wrong, but I don't think JM's name came up at any stage after the film moved to Focus Features with Ang Lee confirmed as the director, although that is not to say that he didn't audition for a role at some stage.

I am actually happy JM wasn't in this movie. I love James and all, but this movie is really perfect the way it is in my opinion. It is possible that JM would've been good in it, actually I can imagine he would... But again, it turned out great. Brokeback Mountin is just such a beautiful and sad movie, couldn't really imagine it any other way...
Anyone know which part he was supposed to play (if he was).. ? If it was Heath Ledger's part I am very very greatful that he didn't cause well... Heath was perfect...

i have to agree with Epo...i don't think the movie would have been the same if JM was in it. he's a fantastic actor, and i love him in everything he does...but come on! it's SPIKE! i don't think i could have enjoyed the movie as much if it had been Spike making out with another guy!
i do remember reading something saying that JM was in line to play one of the lead characters in the movie, i'm not sure when it was, but i think it might have been sometime during Buffy S7.
but for some reason he had to drop out...however i don't think it had anything to do with the nude scenes, 'cause a) you don't really seen much at all, and b) JM has done nude scenes before, so i don't see him having a problem with it this time.

Actually, I would love to see Spike make out with another guy.. Although I want the guy to be Angel 😀

Eh, anyways. Didn't JM have some problem with the whole Spike/Angel thing? Long ago since I heard about this but I'm quite sure he could have some problems with not wanting to do guy/guy nude stuff in a TV show/movie.. Hm.

hmm...yeah, i'd have liked some Spangel stuff too! 😉

ooh, maybe this is the reason he dropped out? he didn't want to do any guy on guy stuff, and when he found out about it, he pulled out?

Wouldn't surprise me if JM wouldn't have wanted to do some of the stuff in Brokeback Mountin. True there isn't much nudeness, but I don't know.. the scene in the tent? Dunno if he would've wanted to do that eh..

i guess you'd have to trust the other person completely to do that scene, lol
if this was the reason, i can understand why he dropped out.

I honestly think he's a bit silly about it but yea, his choice ;)

'Brokeback Mountain' is based on a story contained in a book of short stories called 'Close Range: Wyoming Stories' written by Annie Proulx and first published in (I think) 1998. It's a well-known book and in any case if James Marsters ever did audition for (or was offered) a role in the film he would have known full well what the story dealt with. I find it hard to believe he might have subsequently pulled out because of the nature of the story.

If he ever was attached to this film (which I still doubt, in truth) I suspect it was before the production moved to Focus Features and Ang Lee came on board as the director. Any casting that may have been done before that would have become null and void as a result of the change of production company.

I've read gossip about the reaction of the actors to the alleged hidden sub-text in the Angel and Spike relationship as it was portrayed by the writers in the fifth season of 'Angel', but in the version I know it is supposedly David Boreanaz who was uncomfortable with it. Personally, I doubt there is much truth if any in the rumours and it probably has more to do with the actors joking around and having a bit of fun.

not at all, dont worry. just wanted to make sure it didn't seem like i pretended to know anything about this.. since i was just speculating ;)

I agree that he probably knew about the story, I was just talking about some of the scenes he would've had to do. Again, I have no idea if he ever was supposed to play any of these parts, just saying, it's a possibility that that's why.

Again, no idea, might be like that or nothing at all. Just saying I've heard about it from lots of places/people.

No offence was intended - hope none was taken.
I never heard this either. Maybe there is confusion with the role that James talked about several years ago in the movie version that is/was to be based on a play titled Italian Heat and titled Ventian Heat? : pconfuse In it, James was to have played a role of the husband; here is the plot summary from the IMDb:
1943, Italy, the Venetian countryside. The country is in turmoil as Mussolini's government is losing power and Hitler's invasion is imminent. Terrified soldiers are fleeing their posts rather than fight for a regime in which they no longer believe. On an isolated farmhouse a young couple's marriage is breaking down as two deserters arrive. A romantic drama unfolds as the younger soldier starts an affair with the wife, whilst the other awakens a newly-found passion in the husband. In a time before homosexuality is tolerated, can their love survive? Or will the narrow-minded fanaticism of the Nazis, the Fascists and the Catholic Church tear them apart? Based on real events and revealing the truth of the Gay Holocaust, "Venetian Heat" is a riveting story of passion and love versus bigotry and hate.
James discussed the role at several cons, starting in 2003 I believe, but the funding for the film was off and on, and last I heard, James was no longer listed as being involved in the project. The official site for the movie is no longer up either, so that's not a good sign, IMO.
