I was watching Serenity again, and I got to thinking the "verse" reminds me of the internet.
I think it's because of this -
So in the verse you've got the Alliance and the Independents fighting to decide how this new collection of worlds they've happened onto is going to be run. The alliance has this vision for the new worlds they see as utopian, but really involves the total control of the masses by a select collection of powerful groups, or individuals. The Independents don't like that.
On the internet you've got a similar kind of war between attitudes going on. Corporations want control of how you use the internet. Shortly you're going to see something called TCPA, where controls are being built into your hardware to force you to behave the way they want you to online. That isn't science fiction. It's on the way.
Now us, we're like the independents. We just want to share our little thoughts with who we want, when we want, the way we want (and possibly the odd song, or movie too. 🙂 ) We don't want the new corporate world government to tell us how to use this new world we're pioneering. We just want to do, what we do.
That's why I don't understand why more people didn't fall all over Serenity, and love it. So much of it, is so relevant to so many things that are happening in our own little world.

River
"We meddle. People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think. Don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes, and in their heads, and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome."
Teacher
"River, we're not telling people what to think, we're just trying to show them how."
